fluff; you had me grabbing my map to check whether you had an alternative answer. Nope. They all have islands of one form or another.  For example, Quebec has islands on its northern boundary.

Oh - are they the only 4 provinces that don't border the United States?

Damn! And I didn't even look at the map! Well, actually I did, but Canada is the farthest part from my desk chair, so I couldn't see it from here. So I maintain that counts as not looking.

OK, then...

Barbara Streisand
Whoopi Goldberg
Rita Moreno
Liza Minelli

Oops. I got lucky. I couldn't remember if George Baker was in that, and I couldn't even recall who Sian Phillips is. The Derek Jacobi and Patrick Stewart combo seemed like a good basis for a shot in the dark.

OK. This is a little tougher, and certainly tougher than it will appear at first glance.

September
October
November
December

Hint: It's not that these are the four months during which autumn occurs, and in fact it has nothing do at all to do with the seasons. The historical commonality here is one that only these 4 months share.

The only months named after the Latin words for numbers.

Huh! I hadn't thought of that! But no, that's not it.

However, in a way you're much warmer than you probably realize.

I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for, but they're the only four consecutive months with a federal holiday in each one.

September: Labor Day
October: Columbus Day
November: Veterans Day, Thanksgiving
December: Christmas

Oh, that's a shrewd guess too. But no, that's not it. Fluffy's guess that the commonality has to do with their root language was closer to the right general direction, in the sense that the commonality they share goes back thousands of years.

Panda, are you looking for carry-off from an older calendar (as Sept-Dec mean months 7-10, although they are our months 9-12)?

Fluffy already pointed out all the others are after names--Norse and Roman gods and two emperors.

Is it that they are the only month's whose names are still used from the old Roman 10 month calendar?

They were all displaced when Julius and Augustus Caesar decided they wanted months named after themselves.

Those are the only 4 months that remained the same from the Roman, Julian, and now Gregorian calendars.
