SpiceGuy - you got it! The (not so) hidden clue of EZ was to refer to Erte' taking initials (in French of ET) as his production name.  The quartet was birth names of designers of 1st half of 20th century.  (Georges Briard had a fascinating life involving the Polish aristocracy, lots of money, Chicago - my home town - WWII and Germany.)

DC, never heard of star anise in pumpkin pie, but on the right track, they are ingredients

Let's see... Star Anise is a seed pod as is clove, Cinnamon is a bark, and Allspice is a nut (like nutmeg) - how 'bout woody plant pieces used as spices?

they are all used in some wine mulling recipies. they are all located in at least semi-tropical climates (I belive ceylon would be semi tropical) vietnam, the carrib and so on.

OK MN, You got it and didn't even know it.

Spiced Rum

INGREDIENTS
1 750 ml bottle gold rum
1 (3-inch) piece vanilla bean
1 (1-inch) piece cinnamon stick
1 point star anise
2 cloves
1 piece allspice
1 (1-by-1/2-inch) piece orange zest

INSTRUCTIONS
Add all the spices to a 750 ml bottle of golden rum, close, and let steep 24 hours. Use in your favorite rum-based cocktails.
