Are they related by generalization?

Are they diametrically opposed?

Do they have some things in common?

Are there characteristic traits that are not seen in other personalities?

Is it perception or definition?

Is it based on personal experience or perception or hearsay?

Status: offline 		a mentor is someone who has your best interest at heart, a predator has his/her best interst at heart. A mentor will listen to the stupidest thing you did and not judge you, a predator will use it against you to make you feel worse. A mentor is always there for you , a predator gets what he/she can from you  and toss you away like a used klennex. just my humble opinion of  based on observation of  human nature.

Predators prey on your weaknesses and tear you apart with them.
Mentors see you weaknesses and help you make your weak spots stronger.
One works from perversion of your submission & the other from protecting it.
Both make you miserable at times, but only one has your best interest at heart.

Status: offline 		As others have mentioned a Mentor is someone who has your best interests at heart. 
A predator has only their own agenda.  A predator puts on the disguise as whatever attracts the prey, maybe as a mentor, a boyfriend, a lover, a guide, or whatever it is the prey is most likely to be attracted to.  One wouldn't douse themselves in deer urine to go duck hunting and one wouldn't hide in a duck blind to hunt quail, etc.  A predator is just that, a hunter, for whom the hunt itself is their greatest desire.  i don't think a predator and a mentor have anything whatsoever to do with each other, it's just that a predator may pretend to be a mentor in the same way a hunter dons camouflage.

my opinion is based on actual experience.  i have had two mentors who have helped me grow in ways i would not have thought possible and to whom i am grateful.

Status: offline 		Very well said everyone! A mentor is a person that you can trust to give you answers that will be in your interests. A mentor will help you realize predator behaviors and help you avoid them. A mentor will tell you not what you want to hear but want you need to hear. They will celebrate your joys with you, hold you when you fall and help you back up on your feet.

Anyway, in the scene, there is often no difference.  A mentor can also be a predator.

IN THEORY, a mentor is there to guide and offer assistance, while a predator is there to take advantage for their own pleasure, ignoring rules of ethics.

And sometimes the most effective way to be a predator is to wear sheeps clothing.

I agree 100%.  I've seen "mentors" who snatch up new subbies faster than a kid snatching up candy.  They are so in love with the idea that they have X number of subbies under their "protection"  All the while restricting the subbie's conversation with other Dominants thereby limiting their options of finding a match.  They aren't doing it to protect these newbies, they are doing it so they can control without any real commitment.

Mentor:  What Obi Wan Kenobi was to Luke Skywalker.

Predator:   What Darth Vader was to Luke Skywalker.

In BDSM the terms "predator" seems overused and watered down to mean:  A horn-dog who will take advantage of any submissive stupid enough let him/her.  In vanilla terms, such a horn-dog would simply be referred to as a jerk.  I've also seen the term mentor misused, as in "professional mentor," which is simply someone who will charge a fee for taking advantage of any submissive stupid enough to let him/her.   "Mentor" is likewise watered down, and a horn-dog who pretends to be a mentor can then be called a predator by any submissive stupid enough to ... You get the idea.

That's a bit different from the way the term "sexual predator" is used in the wider world, but the term "professional mentor" is used by shammers in the vanilla world too.

That is the best explaination I have ever seen for this and it makes so much sense.

A mentor is just like a predator except he is more patient in taking his time for the same outcome.

Granted there are a few out there that are good will at heart.
