The "U.N." can't find $22-$24 B that's "missing" in the "Oil for Food" program and our government wants to give them even more money and "work" with the "U.N.?"

Popeye, anything but the US government eh. You must trust them 100% to believe that shit. So, you vote for bush and the republicans?

NG, no, I don't mean what you're inferring.
I don't like the Bush Administration for a number of reasons and certainly wouldn't vote for someone who went to "Yale" and had a silver spoon in their mouths.
When I say "the govt" I mean U.S. Taxpayer Dollars.
That (is) the name of the game after all, foreign countries and orgs hunting for the money of U.S. Citizens.

Popeye, this is my point:

1) This money is Iraqi money from their oil sales and assets. It's not "US taxpayers" money. I know there's a few of you who like to think you're propping up the world. If you understand what a lying, scheming bunch the US government are, what makes you think they wouldn't strip Iraq bare and use their money as they wish?

2) If you don't support bush and his government then why would you believe the smokescreen that is the attempted tainting of the UN. Yes, the UN is by no stretch of the imagination a corrupt-free organisation. However, as much as you hate to admit it, and as much as you refuse to believe it, the corrupt organisation that has blood on its hands, far more than any other, is the US government. Dressing this up as "US taxpayers money" (when its not remotely true) will not change the fact that your government is an embarassment to the human race.

NG, again, I don't support the Bush Administration nor did I support the Clinton Administration.
Nor do I want to support the "U.N." with my Taxdollars.
I think you and I are pretty much in agreement.
You're preaching to the choir.

Popeye, with the exception of that in bold.

Your economy is benefitting from oil revenues stolen from Iraq and handed out to your multinationals. This idea that US taxpayers are propping up world organisations is wide of the mark. If anything, US taxpayers are benefitting from assets stripped from other parts of the world. Your line is pure propaganda, straight from the government's mouth.

Oh I have been thinking about the money a lot lately.  Many people are struggling, homeless, cold, poor, etc.
Budget cuts and we have billions to just lose? People are serving life in prison for stealing less than $1,000.

Leave it to me to nit pick, but MzMia (or anyone) could you please explain this statement?

MzMia to the rescue!  Have you not heard of the 3 strikes law? Proposition 66?  In certain states, especially CA,
3 strikes and you are out. Again, people are serving life in prison for less than $1,000 if this is their 3rd offense.
Please read, it is indeed fundamental. [;)]

MzMia, in retrospect doesn’t your original statement of “People are serving life in prison for stealing less than $1,000.” seem a little disingenuous?  After all, like it or not, the person or people are actually serving life in person for being a habitual offender(s).  Had they not committed the (at least) two prior felonies, they would not have been punished as harshly for committing the third.

kindaeasy69:
We also have a fellow here in California who is doing life for a slice of pizza.....three strikes ...

Hey Thompson what’s new?

I will assume you are referring to Jerry DeWayne Williams, I sure like this synopsis of Mr. Williams crimes.

The case of Jerry DeWayne Williams, known to most as "the pizza thief," has been the cause celebre for three strike opponents. Convicted for stealing a slice of pizza from a group of children, Williams became eligible for the third strike sentence because of his lengthy criminal history. His original sentence of 25 years to life prompted political activists to push for a wholesale revision of the law.

I’m no lawyer Thompson, but 25 years to life and life are two different things.

Later,
KE

kindaeasy69:
Twentyfive to life and life hmmm...the difference seems a little like picking flyshit out of pepper.  In this particular case his sentence was reduced to 6 years on appeal.  Six years for a slice of pizza...seems to me like a few months of community service would have been more appropriate.  This individuals extensive criminal history includes robbery, joy ridding and possession of a half ounce of marijuana.  Not exactly Ted Bundy  nor is he someone I might invite to my home for dinner but 6 years in prison for a slice of pizza seems a bit extreem not as extreem as his original 25 to life sentence but totally out of porportion to the crime and his history.

So you do acknowledge your post was incorrect, flyshit or not?

When exactly did robbery become, okay? or no big deal?

And by joy riding I’m sure you meant to say he stole someone’s car?

I am not here to argue, I can see others that are.  But I do think 6 years in prison for stealing a slice of pizza is excessive.
No need to debate me on that!
Take care

Ever since large multinational corporations began to be paid for incarceration of criminals, the seriousness of punishments for crimes seems to have spiralled out of control.

But then, I have real issues with non-violent, victimless acts being considered a criminal act.

Thank you Sinergy, there are so many that say things that are so off the wall I don't know why they write them and post
a picture so others can see the person that says the simple minded things.
Thank you for agreeing with me, most normal people would.

At the rate they are building prisons in Texas, it will soon be necessary to build a wall around the state.

I read an article about a company who built a prison out of a "so-called' bullet proof fabric.  A prisoner fell against the wall and tore a hole in it that a person could fit through.

Why do something idiotic (like incarcerate everybody) correctly when you can do a lousy job at it?

I won’t debate you on where the 3 strikes law is excessive or not.  I never stated whether I thought it was good or bad.

But since this seems to be clearly pointed toward me.  Are you saying it’s better to come here and misrepresent the truth?  His (thompsonx)statement was clearly incorrect at best and could be considered completely inflammatory.  God forbid someone say something you disagree with, which is therefore automatically simple minded.

P.S.  ‘Normal’ is a pretty loose term around here, isn’t it?

kindaeasy69:
Please do not try to put words in my mouth.  I did not say that robery was ok nor did I  say it was no big deal.  No I did not mean to say he stole someones car I said that his arrest record (not the newspaper)says he was charged with joy riding and not grand theft auto.  The difference between 25 to life  and life is that the former you may serve a minimum of 25 (being elligible for parole at 12 1/2 years but may actually do life.  Life imprisionment means that you are elligible for parole in about 8 1/2years. but may in fact do life....it has been a while since I did any reading in this area but since you are interested in minutiae perhaps you will help us all out with some deeper research.
I clearly noted that my post was incorrect when I pointed out that he had his sentence recuced on appeal to 6 years.

Thanks, Buddy!
And now you say we're "benefiting from assets stripped from other parts of the world?"
Are we not *paying* those countries for those assets?
Are you saying that the U.S. is stealing oil, gas and minerals?
As for Iraq we really don't need to do business with them!
We can simply buy oil from other countries like Russia.
In a few years Russia will be the world's largest oil supplier.
Even Hugo Chavez badly needs our oil dollars to keep his quasi-socialist society afloat.

As per the start of the conversation, the 12 billion dollars (supposedly missing) is a combination of the proceeds of Iraqi oil sales and Iraqi assets. It is not US taxpayers money. The US government handed it out according to their whims i.e. they took it and handed it out for the benefit of the US government.

This is theft.

Also, regarding your Russia comment, the US government aren't interested in a fair price/deal. They have handed out contracts to 2 US companies (Exxon, I forget the other one) and 2 British companies (Shell and British Petroleum). In a nutshell, these 4 companies now have oil contracts which are heavily weighted in favour the four companies i.e. such profit guarantees would never have been achieved under normal business conditions.

Thank you thompsonx, many here want to argue over nothing.
Point is, many are serving life in prison for petty offences.
12 billion missing? No big deal.
Of course getting a life sentence is ridiculous, but just about everything
going on now in this country is ridiculous.
