Have you ever noticed on Law and Order, (and it's offshoots), NYPD Blue, and most other shows, that BDSM is always evil?  It seems like when someone dies by bondage or anything that has to do with BDSM, some character is always calling the person involved with the lifestyle a "freak" or some other bullcrap.

I get a little pissed.  Especially lately, when my fiancee, who is vanilla, looks at me and says something like, "See, it's bad."

I don’t watch much tv and thankfully am not influenced by it, when I do.

People are always scared of what they don’t know.  In my experience anyway.

I can barely watch those shows when they tackle the subject. I think the worst example of this was a show on Fox called Inside, since cancelled, that had an episode dealing with this in a similar way.

In all fairness, they also portray the resturant business, banking, insurance sales and high school field trips pretty negitivly too...

If you don't like it, then turn off the crime dramas and watch South Park instead. Mr. Slave is relatively sane compared to school teachers and others around there.

CSI touched on it a few times (for those who remember the Mistress Heather episodes).  I don't think they made it look evil.

Maybe it's because I think a Grissam mindfuck would be delicious?

mmmm Grissom :)

I've seen a couple "crime" type shows where a BDSM couple was portrayed in a good light for the whole show, and then in the end, it always ended up that they were the "bad guys"... every time.  How frustrating!

Also I recently noticed on a show where they'd messed up on the facts when a Ds couple where investigated for a murder.  The person who was dead had been tied up so that her legs werent open, in the show the cops claimed that Ds is only about sex, so if they tied the girl up for play, they would have done it differently.  It tempts me to contact these shows and say "Hey! Talk to some one in the lifestyle and try to get at least some of the facts right."

But I guess as in many situations, these people dont understand it and have a fear of what they dont understand, and thats why its portrayed negatively.

Just my opinion.

In many other situations, the group being portrayed poorly will bombard the writers/networks, etc. with notes and emails about how the portrayal hurts the community, why the image they are sending is wrong, etc.  What if all the kinky folk were to do that?  I think people in TV land would be amazed that so many of us are well-spoken individuals that aren't "freaks" at all.

However, it is always my belief that if we aren't doing anything to change it, we can't really complain about it.

Most network shows paint the alternative lifestyle with a very negative brush.
Are you really that surprised?

Aside from the CSI episodes, they tend to focus on the nonconsentual aspects of BDSM as well. I know that in one of the Law and Orders there was a comment way back about how in Manhattan you can find consenting freaks with whips, or something along those lines, so often that it would be nearly impossible to prove something was nonconsentual.
Mainstream calls everything off the norm for sex freaky. You like bondage?  Your a freak.
EVen those who like "too much sex" are considered freaks.  I dont worry about it too much, but its everywhere.

And yes. a Grissom mind fuck would be incredible... and seeing him on his knees in a collar and cuffs might not be bad either

DV
who gets to go to work with that picture in my head now, thanks

FR:  Just to fuel the overheated imaginations around here.  I believe this week is "CSI KINK WEEK" on Spike TV.  The famous Furrie episode, All of the Mistress Heather shows, probably the TS gone wrong show (tho they used that on last month's "Blood and Grue" week).  Dig in!

"It's the same thing," he said.

with alot of the general public, they see people into BDSM as psychopaths who kidnap and torture people. people with higher education r more likely to know the refinements and practices we have. i think the media could be very influential in getting to educate people about what we really do.i generally tell vanilla people i m a lil kinky and leave it at that unless they ask.
but damn ericpup, ur fiancee is vanilla? how r u going to work that out? or i should say how r u going to take care of ur needs?

And sexy as heck!  If I ever saw him it would take everything I have not to ask if he would like a BJ.

Plus, a happy and benevolent BDSM couple just wouldn't make for good television.  It's that "naughty" factor that gets ratings.

I remember this one "cop" show, there was this woman who was the mother of a cheerleader. She was truly evil! Makes me wonder about all those cheerleaders out there on the field during half time!! And know what? All those doctor shows? That's not how doctors act. Nor are all the shows showing teachers how teachers act.

In other words, while I know we might know a thing or two more about bdsm than the producers of this show obviously do, it's always helpful to remember: "IT'S TELEVISION" and let it go at that. Either that or do what I do when the shows incorrectly try to portray my profession. I choose not to watch.

I don't know about that.  I know a lot of people don't want Grissom to pair up with Sarah on CSI.  But having been a long time CSI junkie I can say that a lot of their interaction has DS elements.  I could see them moving toward this relationship since early on in the show.  There are subtle indications of a bdsm'y relationship that almost smack you in the face if you keep an eye out.  (or it could just be my extreme desire to imagine Gris shoving someones face down to his dick).  This last week at the end of the show, Sarah shaved him with a straight razor.  She asked.  "Do you trust me?"  He replied, "Intimately."
Heck.  I almost came.
Maybe it is my perception... but LOL.. my perception of potential bdsm is pretty accurate.  I haven't dated a non kinked man yet.

From what I can remember of its treatment by Homicide - Life on the street, it was fairly well balanced. It even implied that one of the main characters might be inclined that way. Hill Street Blues from what I remember had that or at least role playing as a continuing theme for several of its characters
