I saw that movie and quite honestly I thought it was fairly cheesy and because I'm not a fan of depending on illegal labor in terms of direct labor that I can hire or be responsible for hiring I can't imagine that I'd miss much at all.

If I remember properly (I saw the movie on Showtime on Demand months ago) the movie was about all Mexicans dissapearing which seems to be a bit of a red herring since there are Mexicans (and other Hispanics of other descent) that are here legally.  What a lot of americans have problems with are the illegals and their effect on the economy.

Wildfleurs:
Durring the thirties more than one million american citizens of mexican decent were illegally deported to Mexico.  The voice of protest was noticable only by its absence.
When WWII came along the U.S. government sent all of the draft age males a draft notice.  One hundred percent of them showed up for induction.

Oh you would miss them greatly.  Wanna buy vegetables from the market? for one example.

As George Lopez said inhis comedy act, "Remeber everything you toucvh, we touch first".  That is not really that big an exageration.

They did this last year. May 1st was supposed to be the "Day without Immigrants." Economy didn't skip a beat. I asked a friend of mine who is a manager for a hotel and he said no one missed that day of work. All the housekeepers showed up. And the reason why is because they are legal and have jobs. Legal immigrants don't support this pro-illegal immigration crap.

So these boycots are a joke. The only people that are going to show up are people without a job and illegals. It's a perfect time to get their face on camera. Investigate them to see if they are here illegally. If they are illegal....ship them out.

Also notice that the date they picked, May 1st. That is May Day. A major holiday for communism. So you can just imagine who is the driving forces behind this pro-illegal immigration debate. It is anti-Americans and anti-capitalists.

The questions needing to be asked include:

Who benefits from immigration, legal and illegal?
What industries are directly effected?
Who would loose money if tighter immigration

laws were created and enforeced?
How would the State and Federal governments pay

for better enforcement of the current laws?
Who will pay for a fence and increased patrols on the border?
Are we willing to pay higher taxes?
Will a whole new bureau or department be created at
a Federal level?
How would it be funded?

Do keep in mind that all civilizations are build on a readily
abundant supply of food; and that immigrants sow, tend
and reap our crops, package and prepare them.

People are fond of using produce and farm wokers as an example.
Just how many of them do we need, 600,000,  800,000?
Surely not 2 or 3 million.
And if we didn't have Mexicans doing those jobs we could get Chinese or Indonesian workers.
Or, they could raise the pay rates and hire high school dropouts.
As for the border we could kill two birds with one stone and put Troops along the length of it as they get back from Iraq.

This is a huge lie that I constantly see parroted through out the mainstream. In the little town I live in and other small Oregon towns close by, there are proclamations being organized and brought forward for the ballot that speak to sustainable living, ala ''neighborhood co-ops'' for every property owner to designate a small portion of their land dedicated to growing fruits and vegetables. And what ever they cannot use will be distributed through these neighborhood ''co-ops'' to apartment dwellers and non-property owners at a fraction of store brought prices. In Portland right now, there are several new apartment and condominium projects where there are huge gardens on the roof tops.

So this nonsense about paying five bucks for a head lettuce is a lie; because you know damn well that if you had to pay a dollar per apple and five bucks for a head of lettuce you'd either grow it yourself or go with out. Simple as that.

These little neighborhood co-ops are awesome and should be model for every property owner in America.

PS - The same ''Chicken little /sky is falling'' argument was brought forward when the slaves were freed. They said no one would pick the cotton and the price would triple. It was picked alright

Try getting your condo built without em.  Ever tried to put together say a sheet rock crew?

Pretty much impossible without our mexican friends.  Even better luck trying to find a decent block layer who is under 50 and not Mexican.

your ignorance overflows

To Playful One:  I have never used a Mexican on a sheet rock crew....not once.  I have a number of apartments and a number of garages that I rent.  I have employed Mexicans but I have also employed high school kids, white guys, black guys, you name it.  If I want to undertake a large renovation, I can do it entirely without illegal help.  There is no excuse for allowing this country to have such an enormously permiable border.  A guest worker program like Canada's would be great...if it worked.  There should not be a guest worker program until the border is fenced and properly manned.

Your comment that Utopian Ranger's ignorance overflows is more a reflection about you than it is about him.

And eventually the farming market would readjust and either pay living wages to Americans or go out of business.  I buy all my produce from a local health food store that buy from local farms (local meaning primarily in this state) because it has the produce.  In the summer I buy from farmers markets.

Worse comes to worse we use some frozen vegetables while the market rebalances.  I'm comfortable with that.

C~

I'm in the middle of getting bids for a significant construction project for my condo and there are still at least in my neck of the woods (New England) construction companies that aren't entirely built on the backs of illegal cheap labor.

I have traveled the county extensivly and see mostly white men doing construction. Although when in Philly it was mostly African Americans. The summer I spent in Montana it was almost exclusively whtes.I believe it has a lot to to do with the part of the country you are in

You'd be surprised.

In Boston I see apples and oranges sell for $1 all the time. People buy them.

I'm not commenting either way on the topic since this debate just goes round and round but.... I just wanted to add that you'd be shocked how much people are willing to over pay for things and just have them less often.

There's houses being built all around here and I do business with all the contractors, and none that I know use illegal aliens.

I hear you saying Americans can't / won't do construction jobs?

As far as being ignorant.....I'd go toe to toe with you on anything, Gumby. Take that to the bank.

And who gives a shit about lettuce and tomatoes anyway?
When I was growing up the only time we had that stuff was during the summertime if you grew them in your garden or if they had them in the market which they didn't for most of the year. They were a luxury and you don't really "need" them for good nutrition.
When I go to The Texas Roadhouse I go for the Ribeye steaks not the salads!
"Would you care for the house salad sir?" "Nope!"

You might be willing to pay a dollar per apple.....or, maybe some folks at lunch-time swing by the corner market and pay that much, but I'm quite sure the average American with a family isn't willing to pay out like that.
