Hmm.
Well, on the one hand I want to say: "I've never done that," but given the context of the discussion, I would feel almost as though I'm doing the exact inverse of what you're ranting about by doing so ... so that's a bit of a conundrum. :)
I do know what you're talking about. In my personal experience, there can be a number of explanations (though I would hardly describe myself as an embedded anthropologist of my half of the species ... these are still guesses).
1.) Low self-esteem, which generally connotates it not being true. Most men that I've met (including myself) obviously have a strong desire to prove their worthiness in the eyes of a woman ... some of us go about that in pretty stupid ways, such as lying about something that we feel will make us more appealing as a prospective mate when it is in fact something that the fairer of the species finds completely disgusting.
2.) High self-esteem, which generally connotates the guy being a complete and total asshat. The misogynist crowd typically runs this party line quite a bit in my experience, and the purpose of it (as best I can tell) when they utilize it is to "put the woman in her place." They want to make it seem like it "ain't no thing" and that they "don't care" because somewhere along the line, they learned or were told that taking an apathetic approach toward many women is a way of enticing them. I still genuinely believe that despite this approach, at the end of the day the objective is the same -- impress the woman so as to earn the necessary rights to bed her.
And if we want to go further than that, I would suggest that both of these stem from a long list of strongly reinforced genetic imperatives as dictated by countless milennia of successful ancestors. :)
