Why do submissives speak in the third person? Is it something their Master/Mistresses want? If so then why? If not for their Dom/Domme, why do it?

It's usually a Gor thing.  I personally can't stand it when anyone does it.  It serves to show me a lack of intelligence and too much bravado.

I think talking in the third person is a way of showing respect and solidarity to a master or person you greatly admire. I think it is a carry over in the way people show respect for God when repeating scripture. It was especially prevalent way of speaking in medieval times when there was a great difference in stature between people.
I especially like it on occasion when I want to show total subservience. But at times it does grate on the nerves.

This poster can't resist pointing out that dear Queen Victoria (who was definitely not a sub) referred to herself in the third person in all her official correspondence. She would say "The Queen thinks . . ." or what have you. Miss Manners always uses the third person too; this poster is not sure why.

This poster recognizes that both these examples are irrelevant to the thread, but he couldn't resist sharing them.

Speaking in third person is a way of making sure that a submissive/slave remembers their place. It's a way of forcing them to acknowledge that they are 'subservient'.

Actually, it really has nothing at all to do with being Gorean; it started in chat rooms as a way of identifying who was slave and who was not.

I know people who do it.  Works for them.  I go with it.

I know people who cannot stand it.  Works for them.  I go with it.

I imagine the reasoning behind doing it is similar to what recruits experience in boot camp, when they are taught to speak entirely in third person to their superiors.  There is a demeaning quality and a dehumanization associated with the loss of the "I" experience, as well as an elevation of their superior officer.  To whit, the officer is a person, the recruit is simply "the recruit."

I dont want it in my relationship.  But that is just me, and I could be wrong.

Hi,
When it comes to scripture, in Hebrew third person is their "one." Such as "one should live here..." is in Hebrew translated, "we should live here (annu gr'im po)." I don't have Greek, but I can ask my friend who studies New Testament. But I’m guessing that it is following off of the Hebrew (Semitic language group). Or if you want to say that it is a group collective idea when addressing God, which happens more in connection to having an insider-outsider perspective when it comes to religious identity.

Back to the OP,
Personally I don't like third person speak. I find it to be annoying and unclear. I’m guessing if they’re doing it’s because their mistress/master (etc.) wishes it. If so that’s fine by me; I just don’t desire it in my own relationships.

Has nothing to do with being Gor?  go read some of the sub gor posts...I didn't suggest it started there.  I said it's usually a gor thing.

Third person is about as annoying as the "W/we" affectation.  It's not my way, others do it, yay for them.

Unless I've walked into their domain, all I have to do is tolerate or ignore it.  Otherwise, I do stop reading once I see third person or "W/we" in a post or email.  Anyone who uses these formats, I don't read.

Saves lots of time.

I actually agree with that 100%, (lets not make this a habit)    A former love interest of mine  told me that very thing.   he can still affect me as no other ever has , and  we still care for one another , but we could never share a long term dynamic.

I have no clue. Valyraen and I think it's just a barrier to effective communication, something we both prize highly.

Greetings

Third person speech is a form of speech used to keep slaves; and in some cases, submissives; from forgetting their station in life. As already mentioned, the military uses such forms also in their training techniques.

Greetings earthycouple

Though I can understand why you would think that this was a Gorean 'thing', I must disagree with you. Third person speech goes on in many other forms of relationship dynamics also. Master is Gorean, and though he does not require that I use third person while on forums, I am required to use it in real life, face to face conversations. I have also had the wonderful opportunity of meeting others in real life who did not identify as Gorean, yet their property was required to ALWAYS refer to themselves in third person.

Some perfer this; for those that do, it works for them. For those that don't, that's ok also.

I wish you well

I have read the Gorean boards. I will repeat myself for you. Third person speech has nothing to do with being Gorean.

Okay thank you all for the information, I have seen it around and was wondering why people spoke that way. It makes it harder for me to understand what they are saying sometimes, so I sometimes have to read what they wrote several times before it sinks in, but I guess it will sink in faster the more I see it.

I've been in the lifestyle for over ten years now, and part of my local scenes functions for nearly eight years now and never heard the third person speech until I found this site a little over a year ago... I've yet to still actually hear it in real life... but as for just seeing it online I find it a tad ridiculous much like I find people who ask me if it's ok with my Daddy that I talk with them a tad ridiculous... but then to my Daddy and I online is for information and entertainment only which I'm sure is not the case for other people.

I find third person speech annoying also, not only is it difficult to understand, but it leaves me with the impression this person no longer identifies themself as an individual with a mind of their own.

No flames please, I am not implying this is the case, simply what comes to mind when I see third person speech. I fully realize everyone has their own way of doing things and I'm all for people doing whatever makes them  comfortable/happy.

i generally associate it with gor, but i have seen non goreans do it as well. It's done to produce a certain mindset - the slave doesn't own herself, her master does, so she has no right to say "I, me, mine, my" it would imply ownership of themselves. Speaking third constantly reminds them of their place as a slave and they have to think carefully before they speak or type.

It's been my experience that some masters want their slaves to speak in third person to make it clear that the slave is property of their master and reinforces the staus of the slave as not being equal to their master. In this case, the purpose is to constantly remind the slave that they are a reflection of their master and thus the slave's thoughts are not their own but their master's thoughts.

It came for Gor chat rooms and infected everything >laughing>, If someone posts using it I skip their post, if someone speaks to me using it I walk away. If someone wants their property to use it then fine keep it between yourselves and not involve the rest of the world in it!
