Another term you'll get multiple answers for.  My understanding has always been someone 'not in the scene'.  People can go back and forth from being vanilla.

I don't think anyone has a clear concise definition of what vanilla is.  Apparently it is a flavor of ice cream, which was truly a revelation to me.  I must go find some of this vanilla ice cream they speak of at my next available moment.

I've also heard tell that it is any sex devoid of "kink"....which is relative anyway, because what is "kinky" to you, may not be to me.

It seems to be nothing more than a phrase conjured up by the kinkier than thou amongst us to differentiate their particulare brand of kinkiness...from anyone else's.  A meaningless term in my opinion....

That's generally called a "novice" or "newbie."

as phoenix says, bland, it is used as a slightly perjorative term for those that like to look at life that way, slightly condescendingly in my view.
once upon a time, before chemicals became easy to add to food, vanilla was the only flavour ice-cream came in, so it came to mean "ordinary" by those that think themselves special.
there is no "special"!!

To me Vanilla means anything you do in every day life, in other words life in general example being - going to work at the office, having lunch with friends meeting a mate for coffee.

It is also referred to with people that are a couple and don’t get into the D/s or BDSM scene, in other words to me its anything not to do with BDSM or D/s.

And its part of everyone’s life.

A shallow label people use to lump all the people who dont self identity as "lifestylers" into a category. It makes it easier for them to segerate other people, feal more part of the same herd, condescend to people who arent as cool as we are for being into the "lifestyle", and create an image of evil, close minded persecutors who are out to destroy us with their biggotry and unenlightened ignorance towards tieing someone up with shoestrings during sex.

See also "terrorist" for a good example of the word in action.

Tongue in cheek answer here , Vanilla is a bean, similar to a string bean, that grows in places like Madagascar and South America. When boiled it produces a flavored syrup that has a slight alcool content and is used , mainly in baking, to flavor foods.

In the world of lifestyles, as many have said, it is used to denote someone who does not think of themselves as a participant in that lifestyle. They are the people who only do missionary, or think anything different is "kinky". They are also the ones you see on shows looking for ways to spice up their sex lives. Unfortunately they are also the ones to make most of the laws banning certain things.
Hope that helped clear things up

Vanilla - A great ice cream flavor. Also someone who doesn't choose to be in the lifestyle because either they don't want to try it or they don't find fulfillment in it.

And for that matter, will someone please tell me what the hell is wrong is missionary? It's my favorite position because, among other things, it's the one where I orgasm the most. It may be traditional but I'm not going to argue with bed-soaking gushers just to get more "kinky" points.

Vanilla to me is simply reality, the real world, real life.

It's anything which is non-BDSM and non-D/s and devoid of the roles we adopt, the rituals we go through, and the interaction and play based on the playing of such roles.

Lifestyle is living your life on the basis of your chosen role in BDSM or D/s and the interaction, relationships, rituals, etiquette and play which we all engage in when we adopt such roles. However there are some who tend to perceive their BDSM roles and lifestyle based on such roles as reality and as such become detached from vanilla or actual reality.

For some time I perceived myself to be lifestyle but came to realise that my circumstances had changed and I had not modified my own definition of lifestyle which I did and remained lifestyle until fairly recently. I am no longer "lifestyle" per se, because my circumstances have again changed, as has my life, I have the experiences I needed and I have different priorities in life. However BDSM remains an integral part of my lifestyle, and I therefore still participate, I am still active in the community and would argue that I do still participate in the lifestyle. I just don't eat, sleep and live BDSM any more.

I am a pre-op TS who identifies as both a submissive and a lesbian, I am also an established playwright and stage director working mainly with disaffected people and small scale fringe theatre. I don't quite see how I fit the stereotype here and could argue that I am actually perhaps more different, diverse and 'kink-friendly' than many people who define themselves as being in the lifestyle.

I do have a brain and a vivid imagination, and can assure you that I don't need any help whatsoever in spicing up my sex life.

I've spent several years working to help establish the BDSM, LGBT and Transgendered communities in Warsaw, Poland. I'm a moderator in a Polish Transgendered chatroom.

There is some truth here, as I would love to see intolerance and prejudice towards other people, including towards people who practise BDSM, banned forever.

Yes it has. It shows that being part of the BDSM lifestyle doesn't necessarily protect you from the generalisations, assumptions and and judgements made by other people who are also part of the BDSM lifestyle.

Umm, not exactly.  Ice cream was always flavored, long before it came to be flavored artificially.  Vanilla is a flavor too, after all.
