The Collar Question - 10/25/2007 9:21:34 PM

I've always seen collars in two different ways.

For me there's the fabric/leather/pleather/chain collar that is used in play or bondage but doesn't necessarily symbolize anything except as a tool for bondage no more really than handcuffs.

Then there's this other ideal of a collar, maybe it's what sub girls think of instead of dreaming of a wedding ring. Something like http://www.houseofcollars.com/images/BHSC300.jpg which is designed to be discreet and wearable at all times including at public functions. Its the thing you dream about having someone bless you with some day.

Am I the only one that sees this this way? I really thought about it for the first time when a friend of mine that I was casually playing with pulled out a collar and before putting it on me for play use asked me "do you hold significance in a collar" to make sure that I wasn't going to think more of it. Since it was *obvious* that it was only for play, I didn't even try to have the discussion with him of the two types. Since for me it easily fell in the first category, it wasn't an important discussion to interrupt play with. (This was someone that truly is and will only ever be a casual partner and nothing more).

That's pretty insightful, silkenfire, many slaves and submissives actually have two collars - a sturdy one for play, and the one that symbolises their owned bondage. Some only have one, and it serves both purposes. I've been told in the past that originally only the female wore the wedding ring, and that it was a similar symbol, a small collar that represented that she belonged to her husband.

I would venture to say though, that only a collar given in significance will have that significant meaning to the recipient.

I'm just not that sort of person, I guess. I like the idea of the collar indicating a deeper relationship, but I won't insist or miss it if I somehow enter a relationship where the guy doesn't feel the same way. I'm not much of a person for ceremony or tradition. I don't even like anniversaries, and will only consider celebrating a yearly one. (I've known couples my age doing more. Too much work!)

However, having a "play" collar is damn helpful when someone does think that way. You keep the meaning that whoever gives to the "true" collar intact, but you don't miss out on the chance to use the "play" collar for play.

It's a symbol that can be whatever you want it to be- what matters is how internally bound you are.  Many slaves do not have any collars at all.

i only have one collar for play, since i'm not actually collared by him. And it's like a patent red leather type that i'll wear when we play

i have a couple of "play collars".  i also have the permanent collar that Daddy presented me with in august.  that one looks like nothing more than an odd chain, and a heart pendant hanging from it.  (its a fine stainless steel cable)

its the meaning someone attaches to the object, not the object itself.

i have 3 collars from Daddy (will receive one from my fiance in Jan when he visits again).   while each one holds a special significance to us, neither are viewed as "play" or whatever when i wear them.

I have several play collars that I like, but they are just for play.

My collar that I wear everyday is an omega choker that is white gold on one side and yellow gold on the other. Very practical in my opinion. There is a slider that can go on the omega and was designed by my Sir and I. It is completely unique and original and I adore it.

~Fast Reply~

I regard collars as just another piece of jewelry. Some have deep emotional significance, others are just shiny.

Master gave me one collar and that is a lapis lazuli pendant which can be seen on my collar me profile. Master found it at www.silvershake.com  they dont make that exactly pendant anymore but they do have some nice pieces. I recieved the collar/pendant this past march as a birthdady gift. Adoracat has a point and it is the meaning behind it not the actual piece itself. Hmmm going to have to check out the site again myself..christmas is coming..ohhhhhhhhhhh santa baby!!!!!!!!

Yeah thats just what i have always thought collars were, the two versions adn i think sometimes when you talk about them you can be arguing a point because you dont have a similar view. Im not collared but i see a distinction between a black leather d ringed collar for play and one that you wear everyday
