Tannie -> RE: menstrual cramps (2/24/2008 6:38:26 AM)

I discovered by accident that if I meditate as I am falling asleep right at the beginning of my period, when the cramps are just settling in, I can make them go away without painkillers just by telling my body to stop hurting.  It works with the migraines that come after my period as well.

angelikaJ -> RE: menstrual cramps (2/24/2008 6:45:12 AM)

I know that for women with regular cycles who have cramping that it helps to start the Ibuprofen or the Naproxen 2 days before you start your period.

I don't have regular cycles.[:'(]

Okay, I had to chuckle here on the "wishing orgasms helped". I can't think of a single thing for me that an orgasm won't improve on. LOL. It helps my headaches (okay, there can't be any hanging-from-the-chandelier sex with a headache, but it still helps), it helps my aches and pains, it helps my interpersonal relationships with my family (dealing with holidays is soooo much easier with a good headboard-banging fuck session first), and I swear it's not true, but I have been told I'm easier to get along with when I'm regularly getting some.  Bahhh I say, they're all wrong.

Hot peppermint tea or peppermint hot chocolate with non-fat milk. Warm heating pad while I am at home and yoga. I do a LOT of streatching and it helps that I am doing Muay Thai, since that causes my mucles to move around so I can't dwell on them, and the movements help to eliviate the pain.

my tactics for dealing with cramps are very similar to this - going to the gym to stretch, run, and do kihon / foot drills. then coming home to soak in a nice warm bath and drink peppermint green tea. works everytime ^_^

Throw in a few handfulls of epson salts in the bath water while the tub is filling and if you are not alelrgic a few drops of peppermint oil will help too and it's relaxing for not just your body, but for your mind as well.

I do have a question, not to hijack, but out of curosity.  What alternative medication(s) can be taken inlueof Ibuprophen or Naproxen? When the above tactics don't work, I'm stuck; I end up doing more streatching and Muay Thai to eliviate them. I'm horribly allergic to NSAIDS [non-steroidal anti-inflamatory drugs] and Asprin so those are off limits.

CalifChick -> RE: menstrual cramps (2/24/2008 12:44:04 PM)

Wow, slaverose, what a tough spot to be in. I was going to suggest ketoprofin, but I checked and it's in the same class as ibuprofin and naproxen, as I figured.  They are all NSAIDs, and at low doses work as an anti-prostaglandin and at a higher dose as an anti-inflammatory.  Without knowing what your sensitivity/allergy is, I was wondering if you could tolerate them at a lower dose for the antiprostaglandin effect (which is what you want anyway, moreso than the anti-inflammatory effect) - excess prostaglandins are what cause the uterine contractions.

I found this interesting tidbit from the American Medical Association:  Allergic reactions to aspirin are relatively uncommon, occurring in about 0.3% of the general population. The incidence of allergic reactions is highest in persons with chronic urticaria (20%), asthma (4%), and chronic rhinitis (1.5%). The association of aspirin sensitivity, asthma, and nasal polyps is referred to as the “aspirin triad.” Interestingly, the nasal symptoms may occur first, followed by asthma, and finally by aspirin sensitivity. Allergic reactions to aspirin are thought to be related to the inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis; therefore, any patient with an allergic reaction to aspirin should avoid taking other NSAIDs, which also inhibit prostaglandin synthesis.

Since prostaglandins are what is behind the cramps, and you have a problem with prostaglandin synthesis, you might just be stuck, in that anything that works on the prostaglandins might be an issue for you.  So for you, you might have to go strictly with pain relief (whatever prescription pain reliever you can take), as opposed to prevention. Have you asked your doctor about alternatives?

Missokyst -> RE: menstrual cramps (2/24/2008 9:05:16 PM)

I have only gotten cramps during and after giving birth.  Dang those are a bitch.  The only thing that worked for me was a hot shower and distraction.

sweetwenchie -> RE: menstrual cramps (2/24/2008 9:24:52 PM)

Depends on how bad they are, i have endometriosis, so at times the pain can be intense, though not each cycle is like that.  Thankfully after they first day i no longer have any cramping at all to deal with.  i keep begging the Doctor to remove my uterus as i have no use for it whatsoever, but no luck yet.

If it is a particularly bad month, i use a heating pad and pamprin type of relievers, otherwise i just try to ignore it until it goes away.  Keeping busy and distracted seems to work the best for me.

That is true - I used to have to do it in the past, but now my cycles have changed a bit and I don't need the extra meds.

Wow, I really don't know what I'd do w/o the NSAIDS.  I remember at 13 or so crying in bed the pain was so bad and my mom went and got some pain killers from her friend down the street - which were probably just prescription NSAIDS, which weren't available OTC at that time.  I had to go on the pill at 17 to help with the periods and the pain.  General pain pills (vicodin, etc.) do nothing for the cramping pain for me.  Have you spoken with your doc about it?  Perhaps Tylenol?  Can you take that?  I know it's not very strong, but I don't think it's classified as a NSAID.

MissAngelandsub -> RE: menstrual cramps (2/24/2008 9:53:05 PM)

For me cramping can be helped by either moving constantly like I do when I work or by applying heat to it in some way. Orgasms make my cramps worse which sucks because I get extremely horny during that time of the month. I have really bad cramps and I hate to take medicine but if it gets to unbareable ibuprofen works for me also pamprin or Midol help a great deal and for anyone allergic to Nsaids can take pamprin or Midol because they only contain generic tylenol. I have found that you can put rice in a sock and put it in the microwave for a few minutes and heat it up and it will help in case you are like me and don't have a heating pad also you can freeze the rice to keep it fresh and use it over and over for a goodwhile before you need to change it. Hope this helps [:D]

idontknowdou -> RE: menstrual cramps (2/24/2008 10:01:43 PM)

i dont get cramps much so i just bare with them when i do get them no pain is as bad as the pain i had when gall bladder was going bad.

Tantriqu -> RE: menstrual cramps (2/24/2008 10:13:52 PM)

Heat, advil, tylenol and the weight of a good man on my lower abdomen.  Orgasms, yes, but it's the one time where I have to be lying on my back; female superior really increases the pain.
Trouble is, orgasms increase the bleeding:  WTF?  No fair :-(

sweetwenchie -> RE: menstrual cramps (2/24/2008 10:23:09 PM)

Orgasms increase the blood flow true, but that also helps the flow to end sooner.  Always have to look at the bright side of the mess.

obagaar -> RE: menstrual cramps (2/25/2008 6:52:28 AM)

Tylenol and chocolate. Orgasms work, but I just don't feel like being touched most of the time on my period. I'll be horny, but have cramps at the same time.

angelikaJ -> RE: menstrual cramps (2/26/2008 8:48:30 AM)

thank you everybody for the great posts!

sarzyness -> RE: menstrual cramps (2/29/2008 5:06:19 AM)

heh, ive just came on to ask the same question!

on the first day of my period i get really bloated, i get very bad cramps, i get headaches and im physically sick. i usually use one of those heat pads you can get to stick on clothing to help back pain, and put that on the inside of my underwear for the cramps, its a lot easier than walking about with a hot water bottle, and they last like 12 hours, i take a couple of extra stong paracetamol for the headaches, and try not to eat all day to reduce the vomiting.

That's a great idea, using one of those heat pads - I never thought of doing that.  I could use one on occasion on my lower back, which is where I get cramps at times.

I wanted to say - because you're young, please be sure you have a check with the doctor before accepting that this is how bad your period has to be.  It could be something minor on the side that's causing such a bad time of it (harmless cysts on the ovaries or something).  Something as 'easy' as going on the birth control pill can control just how tough a period can be for a woman (though I completely understand that some women don't wish to be on the pill!)  I'm 42 and when I was your age, actually a bit earlier, I started on the pill for my horrendous periods and it relieved quite a lot of my symptoms - it was life changing.

Just wanted to mention it!!  Some women who are your age haven't been to the gynecologist as of yet.  I hope I don't come across as condescending!  [:)]

MissAngelandsub -> RE: menstrual cramps (2/29/2008 9:10:54 AM)

I don't know if everyone is like this but when I went on the birthcontrol pill it made my periods sooo much worse the only thing is they weren't as long but the pain and flow was the same. And also since I started to lose weight my periods are sooo much more heavier than before...(doesn't make sense to me lol) but maybe I am just a weird one in this [:D]
