I don't know if everyone is like this but when I went on the birthcontrol pill it made my periods sooo much worse the only thing is they weren't as long but the pain and flow was the same. And also since I started to lose weight my periods are sooo much more heavier than before...(doesn't make sense to me lol) but maybe I am just a weird one in this [:D]

I'm sorry it didn't work for you!  Our bodies can be so tricky sometimes ...

Man, I wish.  #2 for me changed my period from no big deal to crippling.  Of course, that could have been that some sadist doctor took a scalpel and sliced me open.

adoracat -> RE: menstrual cramps (2/29/2008 10:31:10 PM)

peppermint is a good antispasmodic.  one of the things that helps me is (believe it or not) altoids.  i generally go through 2 tins of them if i'm having a bad month, eating those helps the cramps quite a bit, as will strong peppermint tea.

peppermint tea bags steeped in hot milk will work for migraine, too, if you catch it early enough.  it *does* taste a bit like ass, though.

This yoga move works like a charm---I've been doing it for years.

Lie on your tummy, face down, with your arms next to your body. No pillows or anything.  You can also do this on the floor.  Must be a flat surface.

For five minutes, turn your face to the left, resting your face on your right cheek.  Only turn your head, keep the rest of your body flat.  Remember to keep your arms close to your sides.  After five minutes is up, turn your head in the opposite direction resting your face on your left cheek.

I don't quite grasp the 'physics of yoga', but this 10 minute move has always relieved my cramps.

heh, ive just came on to ask the same question!

on the first day of my period i get really bloated, i get very bad cramps, i get headaches and im physically sick. i usually use one of those heat pads you can get to stick on clothing to help back pain, and put that on the inside of my underwear for the cramps, its a lot easier than walking about with a hot water bottle, and they last like 12 hours, i take a couple of extra stong paracetamol for the headaches, and try not to eat all day to reduce the vomiting.

That's a great idea, using one of those heat pads - I never thought of doing that.  I could use one on occasion on my lower back, which is where I get cramps at times.

I wanted to say - because you're young, please be sure you have a check with the doctor before accepting that this is how bad your period has to be.  It could be something minor on the side that's causing such a bad time of it (harmless cysts on the ovaries or something).  Something as 'easy' as going on the birth control pill can control just how tough a period can be for a woman (though I completely understand that some women don't wish to be on the pill!)  I'm 42 and when I was your age, actually a bit earlier, I started on the pill for my horrendous periods and it relieved quite a lot of my symptoms - it was life changing.

Just wanted to mention it!!  Some women who are your age haven't been to the gynecologist as of yet.  I hope I don't come across as condescending!  [:)]

hey, thanks for that, i have been on the pill, and it did help loads... im not sure why im not still on it though....  hmmm

the heat pads are great to use though, a friend recommended it to me, and its really handy how you can walk about with it all day, and its all lovely and warm. heh

kittinSol -> RE: menstrual cramps (3/1/2008 4:31:56 PM)

A double gin and tonic, and a hot water bottle. Can't beat it. (The G&T is genuine period cramps remedy - it's the juniper what does it, innit.)

Sunnyfey -> RE: menstrual cramps (3/1/2008 4:40:14 PM)

lmao, I started my period last night, and I also had super bad cramps, so Sir said "go lay on the spanking bench I'll fix it for you" .........about 30 minutes later of a nice flogging session. No cramps, no back pain, and this is 24 hours later. YAY found my cure that dosent taste icky

Pregnancy, breastfeeding, birth control......basically anything that helps to suppress my having a period in the first place, lol. Not to sure that the pregnancy trade-off is worth it though; Delivery is like all those missed periods rolled into one.

Drug-wise: Aleve, Advil and the wonderful wonder drug Excedrin

LOL... I remember as a young teen begging my family doc back in England (many, many, many years ago) to give me something stronger than plain old aspirin or acetaminophen (which has never done anything for me - cramps or headaches - might as well take a sugar pill). He came back with suggestions like getting on all fours and scrubbing the floor... and yes, drinking gin, but obviously I'd have to wait for that until I was older......

In the end I was able to get a drug called Panadol (kind of like Tylenol 3 - acetaminophen and codeine), which you could buy OTC in England at the time. It wasn't brilliant, but made things bearable. Then I went on the pill, and found regular OTC pain killers (Ibuprofen) were fine, and then once off the pill (and living in the USA) started taking Naproxen sodium. Great stuff that.

Getting on all fours and cleaning the floor? How does that help?

I alternate hot and cold .... Heating pad and ice pack.

silvermuse -> RE: menstrual cramps (3/3/2008 1:05:48 AM)

try homeopathics this is the one I use and I've used variations of it since pre teens.

http://www.1-800homeopathy.com/products/details.html?productid=L018

The one thing to remember though, with homeopathics, is mint, any mint is an antidote for 90% of homeopathic remidies, so change your toothpaste to something else. No gum either.

Arnica is also a good general pain reliever, my Master uses it for strong back pain. (also useful to have around for after a heavy scene)

because the motion of your body in being on all 4's and moving back and forth relaxes some of the muscles that tense up and cramp.

it sounds stupid but it actually *does* work.  crawling around for a while would work too.

Goddess2002 -> RE: menstrual cramps (3/3/2008 4:15:10 AM)

Self-directed orgasms do help me with cramps, although 600mg of Ibuprofen and a heating pad ar required to polish them off.[:@]

whiteslavebitch -> RE: menstrual cramps (3/3/2008 2:33:53 PM)

Ibuprofen, a heating pad, chocolate, and salty snacks.
