Same would be true of Johnson

Johnson listed as the only president who could have served for more than 8 years according to that site. I don't know why Ford wasn't included in the answer. Maybe it's because he was never elected? Obviously, like Johnson, he finished off the term of the prior sitting president and could be elected for 2 more 4 year terms. The only difference is that Johnson was elected as VP and as president.

Thanks for playing. Hope you enjoy the lovely parting gifts!

We now return you to your regularly scheduled message thread...

How about the 2000 election, Soulhuntre? Have you read Ronald Dworkin's analysis of that decision?

Yes I have, and I don't agree. I am very, very comfortable that the 2000 election was correctly decided. People don't have to like it :: shrugs :: there will always be conspiracy theories and whining... but we all get to make up our own mind and viewing all the ecidence I am comfortable with the result.

I doubt this is the proper forum for debating the elections.

Wouldn't apply.

It matters where the site owner lives, not where the site's server resides.

Though they are trying to change even that.

All right, Merc, what was sarcastic up there and what wasn't? I can no longer tell with you. Most of your post did not seem sarcastic, and I'm not even convinced that the comment about Al Gore was sarcastic, either.

I really don't see any reason to discuss things with you when you're never clear about what you're really saying. If it's all just a joke, I'm going to head elsewhere for my humor.

We're not debating elections, and I didn't allege a conspiracy. YOU asked what recent Supreme Court decision I didn't like, and I responded with the decision to award the 2000 election to Bush II. It was a bad decision based on disingenuous argumentation. (It's ironic, isn't it, that that decision led to the situation in this country that caused this thread in the first place.)

Frankly, characterizing it as "conspiracy theories and whining" makes me doubt that you've really read what Dworkin wrote about it.

Why do we voluntarily exist in a place where knowledge is taxable and words can be prevented? Red, white, and blue are beginning to fade. I only hope that we can patch it over with something better, something that radiates more truly as opposed to this glitter gilded nothing packaged in a fancy box and labeled the land of the free, addressed by the man for the people. We shall build a place where freedom does not have a price and ideas are not bought and sold, but shared for better visioin. This paper we put so much faith in, be it money or a constitution, has crumbled in the wake of what we've done with it. They try to deny us our freedoms, our words, but only with our words will we ever overcome.

I apologize, I did not read the whole thread as of yet, but while reading NOMC's above quote, I felt an urge to write....

Why???
I grew up in the middle 60's, and I wonder Why?
Why this Apathy of Protest?
Why is there no longer a Passion to fight for our rights???
In the 60's I watched people banded together and looked the goverment striaght in the eye and asked WHY???
When they didn't get an answer they put their lives on the line, not only in a foreign country, but right here in our own street's!!!
I witnessed many horiffic act's during that period, living close to the campus of the University of Minnesota.
Bludgening of skulls, massive tear gas explosions, goverment lying, trying to supress the truth...but the youth did not lose this battle....the goverment was forced to throw up their lies!!!
I remember being fourteen and bringing together people my age to march through the street's of Mpls. carrying signs to impeach Richard Nixon.

I, IMHO, blame... Apathy... on the part of the people who give a shit, but do nothing, why are we so down on our knees and unwilling to "fight for our rights" anymore???
If Apathy continues....I personally think the United States will become a SECRET, (if not Blatant) Communist, Hated Country....I wish I didn't feel so fatalistic...but have you really paid attention lately???
I think for the Masses, the answer is "NOT"....

Of all the things I've been called, I can honestly say that apathetic has never been one of them. Too passionate, perhaps, but no one has ever even implied that I lie down and take it up the ass when I'm not enjoying being screwed. However, I agree with your basic principle. I have most certainly been paying attention, not just recently, but for quite a while, and it's time we took a stand for our rights, especially those in question (the right to express ourselves in public forum). I, for one, intend to find out ways to haul my weight on this issue, as I do for others that I believe in.

I in No way meant for you to take this personally, I reacted to what you wrote in a general way I feel about things....Nothing personal was directed towards you at all NOAC, I was talking about the apathy I witness in general now a days in our youth.
I'm sorry you were personally offended...it was not my intention at all

edited to add....I don't remember calling "you" anything at all....please correct me if I am wrong...

I think apathy is a problem, but to me the big problem is the way people vote. Of course, the two are related to some extent. Mainly, I can't understand all the people who vote down the line for Bush and right-wing senators and congressmen, and then seem amazed that shit like this comes to pass. You get what you vote for.

LOL. I wasn't offended so much as surprised... with way too much coffee in my system. It tends to mix poorly. I apologize for getting defensive. I really do agree with you, though. If something isn't worth standing up for it's either not worth having or we don't deserve it.

I come down on the other side when it comes down to "getting out the vote."

The last election was the first I have been allowed to participate in, due to moronic age restrictions on voting.

What I think should happen, is that when you enter the booth, there is a basic quiz on where each candidate stands on the major issues. Pass the test, you get to vote. Fail the test, bright lights flash while you are shown the door.

I also think the legal system should get involved when false accusations are made during an election. Freedom of speech is one thing ... freedom to lie with impunity is another.

My apologies for hijacking the thread (along with my co-conspirators). I guess this really should be in the off-topic section.

I didn't realize I was such a skilled commentator. Did you think the Yankee's comment was also serious? Jeez - I better be more careful and consider the totally gullible in the future. I should realize that like elephants fucking, the humor, sarcasm, and beauty is not appreciated by all. Pity, but I agree it's better to give up in that case. Believe or don't believe what you like. If you find solace in believing that the 2000 election was stolen or the 2004 election was lost due to a 7 hour waiting line good for you. Like the general election plurality, you are in the minority. Do you know who was to blame for that situation in the local wards? Who determined and ordered the machines? Find out. Even the locals couldn't complete the 7 degrees of separation to get to the president or republican party in that case.

Personally, I don't think your post or mine belongs in an open forum. I've addressed personally any misunderstanding incongruous with the ongoing thread. But since you addressed it here - so will I. A simple; "what the hell are you talking about?" or "Are you serious" is usually all it takes. I find you post normally intelligent and interesting and maintain that through differences in opinion, knowledge is obtained. But it does seem that instead of addressing or responding to the points raised, you address the messenger. Sarcasm or not, I take that to mean you have no response to the facts. Maybe that’s not the case, but as in this post in an open forum, what’s the point? As to the future - enjoin or not; I won’t be buying Sominex.

Folks, enough. This has devolved from a system announcment to yet another adventure in personal jousting. If you truly feel the need to continue, the Off Topic Discussion (and in the more extreme cases, Polls and Random Stupidity) forums eagerly await your contributions.

Thank you.
