ORIGINAL: Rainfire As the mother of a 20 year old young man with ADD and a younger brother who has PDD (a form of autism) and ADHD, I can tell you that the thoughts of their acting out or being unable to control themselves being a result of lack of discipline and poor parenting are alive and well, thank you very much. I can't tell how many times monster #3 had a meltdown or was bouncing all over and I was told to my face that I needed to discipline them more or get MY act together. For some odd reason, I got to be a Mistress of the Snarky Comeback for those assholes. Especially since they were the same people who would scream "child abuse" if I actually disciplined the monsters. Not to mention that this 'discipline' wouldn't work. Oh yeah, the kid has a mental disorder that caused her to act five years younger than her age, and backhanding her is supposed to cure that? Any kid that acts several years younger than chronological age is 9 times out of 10 doing so because they can't help that. It's easier if the kid has a physical disability. People see a white cane, a guide dog, a wheelchair, etc but they don't see mental disabilities. Mine didn't begin to make strides towards catching up emotionally until she was 17. She knew she didn't act like everyone else, she also knew she couldn't help it and she hated it. None of which changed anything.
