Barbie has a target audience of children, 3- 10 yrs old, these are toys for little girls and boys. not adult toys.

I disagree, Barbie is also largely marketed for adult collectors. Many are produced solely for the adult collector and never intended to be for children's play.   Yes, I agree that it was originally marketed as a toy and still is.......It also has become collectables for young and old.

Agreed on this particular Barbie.
As for 'Barbie being wholesome'?
Omg. Hell no she isn't wholesome or healthy!

Take a look at her measurements, is that what a little girl is supposed to aspire to?
Ever notice how her feet are deformed so she can fit into the high heels?

Or take a look at this for wholesome: Showgirl Barbie http://collectdolls.about.com/od/dollsattoyfair2006/ig/2008-Collectible-Barbie-Dolls/Showgirl-Barbie-US-Exclusive.htm
Just flip through those photos and you see Barbie in lingerie that just screams 'fuck me'.

Being shaped like a freak, being cosmetically perfect is not something I would ever want a little girl to think she needed to become.

If someone wants PC dolls then go for the American Girl dolls. They have one in every flavor and color now so no one feels left out of the doll world. Of course their story lines are completely unrealistic but they do fall into the wholesome category as far as appearance goes.

SteelofUtah -> RE: S&M Barbie Doll (7/19/2008 7:36:46 AM)

sabirah,

I was not really judgeing you, not really I was judgeing the idea that as a society we like to ignore the whole Parenting role that is supposed to be taught.

My Child could want Bondage Barbie complete with Strap On but as a Parent I can say "NO" I would not be angry at Mattel because they Made a Doll that my child wanted, just as I do not blame the makers of toy guns for the war nor do I blame Keebler for my Fat Ass.

The issue I took with what you said is that YOU are in an Alternative Lifestyle, you are concerned about the Impact that these dolls will have on childrens lives and I ask you how much impact did they have on yours? I mean How many women actually grew up with Barbies Measurements? Or a Dream House or a Ken for that matter?

The Point I am making is that being what society considers Sexual Devients and yet worring about the courptability of a Toy when I am sure you would never say that something that was marketed is the reason you are involved in this lifestyle, seems funny to me, and it talks on the Idea that society actually does believe other people are thinking for us.

As I said you could Market Dildos, Heroin, and Prostitutes on TV and still raise a child to know that they are not okay. Or you can pretend they don't exist and have your child find them anyway.

Parents need to take an ACTIVE role in raising thier children and not let the TV do it.

Theres also the point, IMO, that kids see barbie as a TOY... it is US, as adults, that see barbie's clothes as slutty/etc.

monywildcat -> RE: S&M Barbie Doll (7/19/2008 10:18:27 AM)

I agree with OnlyMels on this one, my girls' Bratz dolls looked like they stepped out of the hootchie club and right into their toybox.  This Barbie is relatively tame.  The snotty little girls that would beg mommy and daddy for the Black Canary wear skimpier stuff than this.

On a funny side note, I made a Bondage Barbie, I outfitted her with electrical tape.  Put her in the Gothic looking ornamental cage on my coworkers desk.  They all thought it was awesome, but the higher-ups suggested that she wear more, or get put away. So she got an electrical tape blindfold, and the suggestion became mandatory after we left her up and there was a tour with prospective clients while we were not in the office.  Good times!

Quite true.
My aforementined "converted" barbies all feature miniature versions of the kinds of outfits I make & sell at leather events, but add wings, some themed jewelry and weapons and the look is suddenly much less "Gor" and much more "Xena". :D
If I ever start selling them I actually have a waiting list among my kinky pagan parent friends who see them as preferable to the stock "hootchie mama" barbies.

Speaking of questionable dolls, does anyone remember "Growin' Up Skipper"?  She actually grew breasts.  Man, I wanted that doll but was stuck with Malibu and Quick Curl Skipper. I was ashame to ask Santa for it.

American Dolls rock!

jade01 -> RE: S&M Barbie Doll (7/19/2008 7:45:00 PM)

~FR~

I am not so much worried about how the doll is dressed, I take into consideration as one person mentioned the dolls perfection, in a sense, and how 'this' is portrayed upon youth, both past and present.

We played with these dolls and in a sense were taught, this was how we were supposed to look, rail thin, model perfect, with perfect skin and hair and that we would only be attractive 'if' we were this way.

How many aspired to be like barbie?
Bleach blonde hair?
Balimic?
Anerexic?
Extream diets?

And then this lead to the celebrities...perfection of the body, vanity is what our children are taught in a sense.

My point is, if a child, girls specifically, have problems of weight, blemishes, or anything else that does not fit this mold as they grow up...where does it start from?
That others would look upon those differently, and it carry on into later life where instead of considering a persons personality, intellect and such...

it is how they are 'physically' built..and yes, I have found this based mostly towards females, mainly as there are more then males..as I said, as I have found.
And they will look towards the younger, vs. the more mature also.

Again, question is, when and where did these ideas start to be apart of us?

Not the clothing, is something, in my personal opinion, that is much worse.

Sincerely
jade

I was probably the 1st person in line at Sears for the new CatWoman barbiedoll after the movie came out. You should have seen the clerk's shocked and judgemental expression, especially when I came back minutes later for a 2nd one. [:D]

TheHungryTiger -> RE: S&M Barbie Doll (7/20/2008 9:35:01 AM)

I know I am comming a bit late to this topic, but .....

First of all, the group 'christian voice' is not the US based group of the same name. This story was first reported by the british supermarket tabloid 'The Sun' and they were talking about the UK 'christian voice'. That ~group~ is actualy just one person. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_Voice_(UK)

Secondly, this is not a protest or campain from that one guy. Its not anything he originated or that he is pusing. He hasent even so much as issues a press statement on his homepage. What happened is that The Sun, being a tabloid, just wanted to create a story in order to have something to report on. So they called up this one guy to ask him what he thought about this new doll, knowing full well in advance what his answer would be. See http://www.mediawatchwatch.org.uk/2008/07/18/birdshit-berates-bondage-barbie/

So reports of 'christian groups are mounting an atack againt the doll' is totaly inacurate. But then again headlines like 'one lone nutcase answred a direct question by us about the doll' just dosent sell tabloids.

Amazing, how much controversy three ounces of molded plastic can stir up.

undefined -> RE: S&M Barbie Doll (8/4/2008 6:28:07 PM)

*puts on her geek hat*

I think what should be brought up again here is this is NOT a normal Barbie, this is one made to look like a specific comic book character - Black Canary of DC Comics fame. Though fame may be a generous word for the poor girl. Black Canary is hardly on the top of anyone's list of well-known comic book characters.

What does this matter? Well first of all, how many kids are going to be asking Mommy for Black Canary Barbie? There are rarely any commercials for these types of Barbies unless it’s something young girls would like, like a Hannah Montana Barbie or something similar.

Which brings me to the second point - this is more of a collector's doll and will probably be bought by an older crowd anyways. I have a Barbie dressed as Princess Leia in that little bikini outfit from Return of the Jedi. She wasn't marketed to children; she was directed to older fans like myself.

Just because something's a toy doesn't mean it's for kids. These dolls will be more likely to appear in comic shops than Toys R Us.

And for the record, Wonder Woman is a much better candidate for a Domme DC character than Black Canary. ;) Or heck, Catwoman anyone?

If Mattel really wants a stir, they should make a Witchblade Barbie.

*removes geek hat and wanders off.*
