Personally, while i doubt there's much harm in them, i don't care for OTC or homeopathic "meds" because they are not subjected to FDA trials or reporting requirements. We had a scare while my kid was in college because she was taking diet pills from a homeopathic store that contained epenephrine. candystripper

Candy:

Did you mean ephedra ? I ask because epinephrine is a prescribed medication.
Ephedra has gotten a bad rap because of misuse. Ephedra has been used for thousands of years in Chinese medicine. The thing is.. it has been used for asthma, cough, sinusitis, nasal congestion, etc.

Some where along the line it got touted as an energy-booster, weight-loss supplement, and athletic performance enhancer. IMO, this is misuse of the herb. Ephedra is a naturally occurring herb, its main active ingredient is ephedrine. Synthetic ephedrine compounds, such as pseudoephedrine, are widely used in over-the-counter cold remedies < Sudafed> and are regulated as a drug. Just as Sudafed is a great pharmacueticla for colds, it is deadly when made into crystal meth.

I have been using ephedra for years and still do. The thing is to educate yourself on herbs if you are going to use them. I use the raw herb and brew it with eyebright, lungwort and nettles for head and chest colds. For me, it is better than any OTC product on the market. The problem with the preparations they were selling is the active component of ephedra varied on the part of the plant used and how the company prepared it.

I am a firm believer that any drug or medicinal product can be harmful if misused. I am not insinuating that your daughter misused the product. Quite the contrary... she was misused... Some enterprising moron used a perfectly safe herbal remedy for a purpose it had never been intended for, nor is there credible documentation to support it's use for weight loss, energy boosting, etc. By doing so, the general public was put at risk and the herb got a bad rap.

I use herbs fairly extensively. I would not reccomend anyone just going into a health store and buying some product for such and such a condition. For many years I went into Chinatown, in Boston and got guidance/educated by the older Chinese herbalist. Now I go to a local herb farm and get my own fresh products. And they have a wonderful reference library on site.

An intersting side note, and then I will get off my band wagon. Melatonin is a very popular sleep aide. It is an OTC, product. The FDA has recently approved a drug that mimicks Melatonin, a synthetic version more simply put. It is a prescription only medicine. I would love to know what the pharmacuetical company that has the patent is charging... LOL..

* steps off her bandwagon.. and returns to the regularly scheduled program*

I agree with Katy as well. I've had insomnia since a child. My mind is always activeI have managed to do little things around that house so that when I do feel tired i can go to sleep without thinking anbout what I just left undone. Like dusting, polishing your wood furniture mopping floors.

Another thing is I avoid all caffeinesa nd stimulants. Anything high in sugar. I also will put on a storm or wave sounds cd, rain and waves ebbing and flowing always makes me sleep.

i hope this helps

I fall asleep in weird places... sitting up... on occasion standing up. I also periodically fall asleep standing up in the shower. Not truly asleep but just a slightly nodding off. I don't have narcolepsy. I just don't sleep well.

I have screwy sleeping habits that probably contribute to being tired more than I should be. And I don't think I ever really get any deep sleep.

I found out that counting (as in sheep) is actually something that will stimulate the mind - because you're unconsciously recalling the numbers in order. I've done something like one poster mentioned... where I focus on each part of the body individually and work my way up.

That helps sometimes. And other times I'm faced with anywhere from forty-five minutes to three hours before I'm able to shut up the various thoughts in my head. I'm always daydreaming... and I dream fairly often at night. But because I'm directing my dreams I don't think I ever really fall deep asleep. It's a light unconsciousness.

I think the only time I probably get deep sleep is when I'm having nightmares.

Madame Dahlia,

Has your doctor done a sleep study on you? It's an over night stay at the hospital. I would highly recommend it.

What helps You sleep at night
when You are Restless or have had
Insomnia.

I know that there are some new things on
the market, but was just wondering
what helps You sleep?

Ofcourse A Natural cure or Grandma remedy would do.

Sincerely, Ant

An orgasm. I can't go to sleep without one.

hello All

a quick comment since i frequently have trouble sleeping i've tried lots of things... ambien lunesta (works well at shutting off your mind but tastes horrible) and now taking klonopin to help releieve anxiety.
i do other things along with my drug therapy, so if you dont want drugs some things to try: get some exercise every day, at least 3-4 hours before bedtime. spend some time in the sunlight every day (i think thats the melatonin... the sun helps your body learn when to be awake and when to be asleep). dont drink caffeine or smoke for at least 3-4 hours before bed. spend the hour before bedtime doing something relaxing and quite. establish a bedtime routine, such as taking a hot bath, drinking a cup of tea or warm milk, brush your teeth, turn the sheets down, set the alarm then go to bed--then do the same exact thing every night in the same order. try to keep your bedroom a little bit colder than you like it, i find i sleep better when its colder and i'm all curled up in a blanket. if you still cant sleep meditate... not ON something, the point of meditation is to clear your mind.... focus on thinking about nothing, feel the pattern of your breathing, and when your mind wanders, calmly bring it back to nothing and your breathing. it's almost as good as reading the bible at putting you to sleep *wink*
anyway those are my methods... have been dealing with this for years and over and over the best thing you can do by far is keep yourself on a regular wake/sleep pattern, no naps in the daytime, and have an established bedtime routine.
oh... and i cant orgasm before bed... it makes me WIDE awake... big no-no for me.

good luck

Sleeping pills are generally used for a week. However, there are exceptions. I took 20 mgs of ambien nearly every night for over a year. The reason they are generally only used for a week is because they can become addictive. That is something to talk to your doc about. I didnt have a problem stopping the ambien because i was put onto something else <zyprexa, antipsychotic> which causes extreme sleepiness even at small doses. A newer sleeping pill is lunesta. I personally havent used that one. Another med that is sometimes used for sleep is trazadone. It is a tricyclic antidepressant. Very effective without the addictiveness. My insomnia is pretty bad. I go to bed between 3-5 am most nights and Im back up by 7-8 am.

tips:
dark quiet room. maybe a fan for background noise. comfy bed and pillows, no caffiene within a few hours of going to bed, dont eat anything heavy before going to bed, try a hot bubble bath before bed, and if all else fails, at least your house will be spotless lol

Hi,

I was on Trazadone for sleep, I recently found out
how many side effects it has.
about 30.

This is not a good sleep medication.

Always look up The meds Your Doctor is putting You on.
It will list all side affects.

Sincerely, Ant

try warm milk, when milk is warmed it releases a chemical that makes you drowsy.

instead of using tylenol pm, i use benadryl.  it is the sleep ingredient in tylenol pm, and i don't get the pain reliever, which is rough on the liver...better to only use acetominiphen when needed.

Alan Rickman reading Return of the Native.  The voice is lovely...mmm...and I've never been able to make it past the first casette.  Voice like velvet.

I didn't buy it cuz I was interested in the story.

You could try a hot bath with scents burning. Good 'relax / rest' herbs are lavendar, vinalla. I am hitting that point where I have too much on my plate so my brain keeps going. Normally using herbs help.

I use Melatonin when I can't sleep. You can get it in any drug/grocery store in the vitamin section. It truly helps.

Hello A/all,

I put my head on the seat and Im asleep before the plane's wheels take off from the runway.

I have taught myself to not go to sleep immediately after an orgasm because I enjoy pleasuring my partner.

I can pop in the Big Lebowski and pass out before the Dude has his first caucasian.

People who have trouble falling asleep fascinate me.  Never been an issue for me.

I've had this issue for years; I have no idea why, except I really do think biologically I am a night owl (if that sort of thing is biological, which I think it could be. If so, I am a way, way night owl). I try to do something boring, like sort old receipts for tax season, etc. Or reading something not too stimulating.

"Counting sheep" never worked for me (I experiment with my sheep; they have different outfits on, and different names, and they get into all sorts of odd situations...etc - doesn't work). Of course I can get waylaid by these message boards - then I lose about 2 more hours (but at least I have fun). Good luck.

- Susan
