Oh dear God, that Armstrong video.  I could only watch a second & turned it off when the knife was pulled out. Dear God.

This I can get behind and fully support, as long as it's not recognized on that one particular date.  First responders and rescue/recovery workers put their lives on the line EVERY day.

You didn't respond to my post and I'm curious - do you (or does anyone else here) feel we as a nation should not recognize Pearl Harbor Day?  D-Day?  4th  of July?

I mourn all of the dead that DIDN'T HAVE to DIE and went up into those building to save lives, did just that...and didn't come down. Does anybody try to be a dead hero ? I think not.

Furthermore, no moral ambiguity is created by whom one does or doesn't remember or mourn for their death.

Hmmm...

That sort of opinion makes me tend to assume that the speaker believes in an 'afterlife' that is *worse* than current existence.

Which would be fascinating to talk about.

But, if you believe in christianity's 'heaven' or 'reincarnation' or any number of other benevolent 'afterlifes' then mourning, which in essence is wishing that someone wasn't dead, didn't have to die, could still be alive, etc. IS a major sign of disrespect. It is effectively saying "hello, I don't think you deserved to experience a better existence yet" to the dead person, or "I'm too weak to last without you". Both of those are a huge insult in my book, especially the latter.

And I really disagree with your last statement.

If you're mourning for someone because they didn't 'deserve' to die, and also place some sort of value or quality on 'human life' then... in essence, unless you're mourning EVERY human being that dies (including the muderers, rapists, and general 'evil' people) you ARE creating a moral ambiguity in yourself. You're saying 'this person is worth more than that person' which, in most religions/belief systems/whatever, is a judgement call that people are not supposed to make.

*shrug*

In response to the other people who are surprised by the indifference, cynacism, or anything else in this thread...

really? You're surprised? Did you think that, in a society which practically preaches egotistical behavior, everyone would bind together on some abstract concept of mass-empathy?

Apathy is not a myth. Misanthropy is not a myth. People being/acting/reacting different is not a myth.

i could not agree more, PP..but as it is, as Potsie pointed out, it seems to be left up to each community to do something. I think it needs to be national.

Interesting...

You would support the 'effect' without insuring that people remember the cause?

BTW - purepleasure, no need, and I wouldn't expect, agreement on everything. Indeed, agreement on anything isn't necessary. I appreciate that we have different perspectives and respect yours.

it took the tragedy like 9/11 to happen for people to put the remembrance of Pearl Harbor back in the forefront in people's minds. D-Day like Flag Day, 4th of July, and even Memorial Day to most Americans is just another ordinary day. the 4th and Memorial Day are celebrated not remembering the sacrifices made but as one HUGE bbq picnicking, i-have-the-day-off holidays.

many, many, many years from now - when most of us are dead and buried, i have a distinct feeling the tragedy of 9/11 won't be remembered with the pomp and news coverage like it is now. it will be a mere 3 minute blip on the during the primetime news.

Im going to stir the kettle here.......BUT.......Pearl Harbor happened on an island its called Hawaii.....1941 Hawaii was not a state......so was not part of this country then. Only thing was we had a base there. So Pearl Harbor did NOT happen on US soil. Hawaii did not become a state till the 60s....20 some odd years later. Yet we remember them every year...even have a Pearl Harbor Day. Pictures and video are shown yearly, so that day isnt forgotten.

Nov.22 is always the anniversary.....the day Kennedy was assainated.....still to this day is shown on every news channel and any history and biography channel. Played to death, yet some of us were not even born then and had not had the privalidge of knowing him personally or from afar....all w have is the history. So is always remembered and memorialized.

Lincoln has his own day its called presidents day. Remembered and memorialized....what....almost 200 years later.

Columbine Id rather forget thank you. That day was awful. Wasnt foreign terrorists trying to take out thousands like 9/11.Was some mental kids that their parents didnt give a rats ass what their kids did. They became domestic terrorists. Yes lives were lost. Always shown yearly as a memorial. That shouldnt happen. Gives too many kids ideas. Just this year less than a week into the school year in Tennessee a kid took a gun to school shot and killed somebody. Parents need to go back to the 1800s style child rearing.....bet it would stop in a hearbeat. The old woodshed would be any kids nightmare and wouldnt do the crap they do now. The way they are allowed to dress, act and behave is atrocious.

To say that these things are not remembered is rediculous.

First responders, rescue and recovery from the AMC, EMT's police, firemen...the list goes on and on. I did not suggest singling out the hero's of 9/11...there are so many everyday hero's that need a 'thank you'

I feel that we should take time to honor those that have been lost to not only acts of terrorism, but to other catastrophes as well.  BUT, after 7 years, it does not need to still be a multi- or all day event.

But then, who am I to tell anyone how to they should feel about this.  I'm just a little fly in the great big world that is enjoying her own little pile of poop.  Just stay off my poop.

Lincoln's birthday and Washington's birthdays were combined into President's Day.

I didn't say those events weren't remembered.  I said the dates of those events weren't remembered.   Just to stir that kettle a little more.

here in IL, Lincoln's Birthday (Feb 12) is a state holiday and depending which county you live, most kids have a day off (or not) but everyone has President's Day off. to be honest, there's no remembrance and/or grand ceremony done here - just kids roaming free in the malls.

a hijack...but a quick one. My late husband was very ill and we frequently had to call the paramedics. There was one, a lovely woman, who was so good i would breath a sigh of relief when i saw her coming.
About a year after he died i was in a mall and saw her at a health booth. I was pretty sure she would not remember me but went up to her anyway. Her reaction of "Holly!!" let me know she knew who i was. The only thing i could do was whisper "You made a difference." She started to cry and told me how much that meant to her.

We need a hero's day..

You know...if 9/11 was called something else...whatever title that can cover it all...would we remember the exact date?

Someone came up to me in the grocery store while I was  in uniform & she was looking nervous, I thought she needed help! She said that I took care of her when the ambulance was called/she wanted to thank me. She ended up in the hospital for 3 wks. I felt so good! Her hubby was there & shoot, soon a small circle gathered! You can NOT beat that feeling. ;)

Have a great weekend everyone & STAY SAFE!!
