i was thinking of this too...but look at the newpaper headlines, listen to the news, etc. I can honestly say i have not heard Patriot Day said one time, nor have i read it..

I'm one of the few people I know that mourns the aftermath of the attacks more than the reasoning behind them or the ways in which they were carried out. I didn't stay glued to the set, got all the information I needed in the first hour or so of the newscasts, checked on my friends to make sure they were alright, and really haven't worried about it since.

The resulting restrictions placed on my personal freedoms and the freedoms of those around me... Now THAT'S what has me pissed off. I see no reason that innocent Americans should be punished because of this government's misguided attempts at maintaining order.

I certainly didn't sit glued to the television. Like many people, I have a job. I was at work, working. Listening to the radio and checking the news online as work permitted.

I didn't lose anyone I loved, or even knew. But I do believe you would have to be an utter narcissistic putz to be an american citizen and not have been deeply affected.

I disagree. The news recognizes Pearl Harbor day annually, and has done so for 67 years. Many a book and movie have been produced about that day. I still see documentaries with interviews of those personally affected. It wasn't about "Yeah, let's also recognize all the other bad days" it was about our nations memorials - so far if someone has answered yes or no to that, I haven't seen it.

I don't share your opinion of "pomp," but you're right - 50 years from now, 9/11 will be remembered with a recognized news story, just as Pearl Harbor and D-Day are. But for many citizens of this country, it's still very fresh on their minds. We're still living the aftermath, afterall.

No, I'm not supprised camille, just business as usual. People get to have their thread to bemoan and bandy around to support topics and expect people who don't have anything to contribute to stay out, but people who don't support that don't get to have their anti thread with our supporters flooding the thread and hijacking it. Oh well no big deal. It happens. And I am ok with being unpopular, on an internet forrum* if I am* for being who I am.

Oy. Difficult to respond to without a rant :)

There's no real information, and hence no reason for watching the news. It is still a tragedy, and will always be. (Sucks to have a birthday on the 11th, i bet)

It's also WAY too easy to forget violence done to others. The extended focus on the atrocities of other groups can ultimately harbor ignorance, I believe. Gifts deliberately infested with smallpox spring to mind; the problems for the future are not that it happened, but that it is so impossible for the collective consciousness to acknowledge.

the news may honor and recognized Dec 7 however imo most Americans cared less about it until the tragedy like 9/11 happened. i remember when Dec 7, 2001 rolled around (nearly 3 months after the tragic event), people around here were having remembrances and memorials to remember both events. there was news coverage from Ground Zero and Pearl Harbor on that day. indulge me for a moment, if 9/11 never happened, do you think people would still remember Dec 7th? honestly, i think not.

yes i agree there are tons of books, movies and Time Life DVDs about Pearl Harbor but seriously it's not fresh on people's minds until Dec rolls around. call me cynical about this yet i feel it's a false sense of patriotic pride - we tend to forget about the past except when a tragic event forces us to remember.

oh, btw - what i call "pomp" is all of the news coverage the anniversary of 9/11 garners with reel-to-reel CNN, Faux News and whoever else covers all of the public remembrances with replays and video montage of towers falling,etc all day long.

Everyone remembers it due to the fact the 24 hours news people played the same footage over and over again for weeks afterwards. I was at work at the time, the information was sketchy as to what had happened. There were questions we had relating to the size of the plane if it was an accident, then there was another plane and it was obviously at that point an intentional attack, we didn't have a TV at work, if we did all these questions would have been answered sooner. The human tragedy is something you only realise when you suffer it yourself or loose a loved one otherwise sadly it's just numbers, like the number of dead elsewhere in the world is just numbers, people were upset around the world more for the fact they knew the world was going to radically change and when you look back it has in ways we don't even fully realise.
Who is really terrorising us and why do we count the number dead on 911 but no one questions why those that have died since had to die?

Total dead from 911 was 2975 and 24 missing presumed dead.

Total US deaths from Afghanistan and Iraqi wars 4157.
