Same in France, actually, where a couple can only be legally married by an official representative of the State - if they choose to have a religious ceremony as well, it's up to them, but a religious ceremony alone does not make a marriage valid. But then again, France is rabidly, rabidly secular. I kind of like that: it makes no room for religious ambiguities. Still, gay marriage isn't legal yet in France - although civil unions do exist over there.

PS: fascinating. I just found out that last summer, same-sex marriages celebrated abroad became legally recognised in Frogland. It's only a matter of time :-) .

if gay marriage bothers people so much...why doesnt marriage between 2 different racies  bother them? these multi cultural marriages have the same rights....and so should gays.

gays are just people.  although we may hit on your spouse!

Actually it was illegal. Up until the 1960's interracial marriage was still illegal in some US states. I find it ironic that they used the Bible to justify it then also.

My question is, How can so many people who want the government out of things decide it is ok for the government to legislate something so personal as marriage?

Overhere, holland, people of the same sex can already marry for ages. For our goverment every one is equal. It is not a matter of the goverment wanting to be involved with the people..or think for them....but the opposite...they don't want to decide/judge who marries who.
(law, religion, state seperated...so their is no reason for humans..not to live together..no matter what sex)
Ps..ofcourse many are against homosexual marriages...but as it mostly based on religion..it is not a valid arguement for the goverment.

ps2...they even can adopt or get kids.

ps3 soem preachers (or what are they called) dare to marry gays too...not sure how that worked..and what stream within the church risks to do this

quote:

IIRC, in the Netherlands..a CHURCH wedding isnt recognized.. a marriage is only legal if done before LEGAL authorities

yes..true. Religious people marry twice. Once for the state..the official one..and once for the church. Both on the same day.
The marriage for the state is called citizin marriage..when you have it..then you can go to church.

The government are meant to be impartial and not under the sway a church full of madmen,  they are meant to be impartial....
Marriage to whoever you want should be a universal right, why should us Hetrosexuals have all the misery?

Us hetersexuals have to deal with religious bias as well. To this day a divorced Catholic cannot marry in their church.

It is not possible for a catholic to be divorced, if they are divorced they can not be catholic,  or is this some zany new catholicism some crazy kids dreamed up? Opus Dei would just love to meet them.

I will be sort of sad when gays can get married though.  I will no longer be able to say, "I will not get married until gays have the same rights" in order to avoid comittment and responsibility.    Just kidding for those of you that have no sense of humor.

Honestly I don't know why we debate this here.  I don't think a message board full of perverts is going to see too many people who don't want gays to get married.

There are, actually, quite a few of perverts who don't want gays to have the right to marry. Strange, contradictory, paradoxical, but true.

Aside from the fact that I am perfectly OK with gay marriage, or any other kind of long-term union, the state constitution is NO place for such a law, and thus I will be voting "no" on this come the 4th.

And Bipolar...I'm a conservative. I'm neither racist nor homophobic.

VS,

And it's a pleasure to know you!
I've never said that ALL conservatives are racist homophobes... just that there seems to be a preponderance of them in your party/ideology... which is what led to the drinking game of "spot the smiling minority face at a McCain rally." (Unfortunately, we had to put that game to rest... no one was getting plastered.) LOL

a friend of ours is dealing with this right now. Neither Jim or i are catholic. A catholic most certainly CAN divorce. When have you ever seen an application for divorce asking for the applicants religion? It doesn't happen. Divorce is a legal process.

ETA...however...the catholic church seems to feel once a catholic marries they are married for life. I guess that is the reason they deny a second marriage to a divorced person unless there is an annulment.

I have been and always will be for gay marriage. However I have been and always will be 100% staunchly opposed to ANY marriage that involves ME.

The worst place in the world to be married and/or a father is Michigan.

It's called a wedge issue.  These cleverly marketed non-issues keep everyone busy debating them instead of looking at the issues of real importance (the economy, anyone?).

AWWWWWWW  sorry to ruin your standard avoidance excuse for not getting married. Guess you'll have to switch and start saying " when hell freezes over!"

I find that gay marriage is impossible.

There wasn't much cheerfulness after "I do."

NO, Bear, you just can't be cheerful, Gay and Carefree, after you meet his knightship.
Marriage ruins everything, - after you marry him, He will start expecting Him to shine His armour, and then He won't BE your knoight in Tarnished Armor anymore!

SirsHolly,
Catholics believe that ALL marriages are for life. However, they believe that marriage is not a cermonony that takes place in an expensive dress. Marriage occurs in the heart. In 'Marry for love' society, it should occur before marriage. When you apply for annulment, you are saying, 'although we stood at the front of the church and said those things, in fact, true marriage never occured, so please, please get me out of here!'
In fact, marriage is so sacred that a 'real Catholic' (something like a 'real Dom' - a 'real scotsman' arguement) does NOT believe in getting married to deal with out of wedlock pregnancy. The attitude my children had presented to them in Catholic school and in conversion classes was 'premarital sex is a sin. But sin is forgivable, by the devine grace of God. It benifits no one to compound a sin with a mistake.'
