Ummm...  No disrespect but, you are so very wrong.

Yes, I agree. I lived 25 years of my life in germany and we have our speed limits as far as I can think back and even got some more of them in the last years (where one area where it got reduced is really pathetic....and from great displeasure to us). Am from the black forest area originally and there I was always able to reach the limits with my lovely VW Polo, and enjoyed reaching my work place where i shared an office with another VW Polo driver where we exchanged our tales how many BMW and Mercedes we passed as they drove so slowly (my apologies, but we both just loved our VW Polos and our view was that BMWs and Mercedes either crawl or speed too fast, so we had regular our comments about that topic). Sometimes I took a bit of a higher speed with my parents car (VW Passat and ...dont know what their current 7 seater Passat is called.) but in general at many places you cant drive that fast anyway on german highways (at least not the ones I am familiar with) therefore I am not that much attracted to speed driving. My previous partner has a mercedes and once we met to go shopping I asked him if he couldnt have hired a proper car...such as a VW...strangely he didn't like the fact that i simply didn't like his car...

I was chasing a car that was obviously a high powered sports car....everytime i got close he would pull away. I had the cruiser floored on a nice open road and it was doing everything she had.....needle was buried at 120. The guys in the garage later told me the top speed was 142 so I was somewhere in there.

Oh, I remember, you're one of those tight asses that obsess about speed limits, under inflated tires and those silly traffic lanes. I'm afraid that I'm a sailor and pilot at heart and like to go as fast as I'm blown and believe the shortest distance between two points is a straight line.Besiides, the hula doll on my dash wears a St Christopher's medal, so I figure I'll be ok.

Btw, I'm having eye surgery on Wednesday to remove cataracts that I seem to have gotten from too much time on the water. Next time you ride with me, I should actually be able to see where I'm going.

575 hp Dyno tested to the rear tires

I built the car for road racing not drag racing.

Odd choice of rear end setup for road racing, solid axle and tall sidewall tires. [:-]

Hope you replaced the rods, too... at that CR and displacement you'd need to be turning more than 8 grand to get 575 hp at the wheels, that's a lot of strain.

Thorny, you have a parrot??  Does he/she love riding in the car?  My grey baby sure does!

(oh man, this is late!)

I was traveling with the World's Loudest Senegal Parrot (I later bequeethed him to a guy who lived in the country with a stash o' parrots).  It took awhile for him to get used to the windshield wipers (I kept a towel over the front of his carrier for most of the trip.)  He spent a lot of the day playing with and eating a few jalapeno peppers.

Later I had a Timneh African Grey, and she was not fond of cars...It was interesting when I had her and the cat in the same car!

(hijack over)

[&o]  I was in a rented Subaru out in the middle of the Nevada desert and just had to see how fast it would go. I pushed it to 120 mph and held it there for some time before my nerves started to get to me. 20 minutes later, a cop pulled me over for doing 92 in a 70 mph zone but because he was so nice, I had 3 very young children squabbling and screaming in the back seat and an idiotic husband passed out doing nothing, he took 10 miles off the ticket so it would only a $275 fine rather than a felony and permanent loss of my licence. NICE cop!!!!

masterofdrkness2 -> RE: fastest you've ever driven? (11/9/2008 8:11:28 PM)

I am not sure but  a bike I owned years ago, pegged out at 140 and well lets just say it was there for a long time . as for cars.. we had a drag car and about 130 was the best we could get in a 1/8 mile

TheHeretic -> RE: fastest you've ever driven? (11/9/2008 9:09:11 PM)

Far faster than was safe or sane, in every POS I've ever owned.  Coming back from an out of state wedding last summer, I woke up to find the wife was doing 110 and went back to sleep.

Oh.  I did get a Peterbilt at 68,500 to 113 once, but I don't recommend that sort of thing.

I've got to mention here that for an old 3rd gen like that the 9 inch Ford rear end was always the bullet proof set up. There's really no way to put an IRS into those cars without spending a ridiculous amount of money on the project, for a result that gets you almost no benefit. For the time they were on the road these cars were some of the best handling beasts around, solid rear end or not.

Fastest I ever got up to in my nearly stock '82 firebird was 110-115'ish. Not the fastest beast, but it did well for a 20 year old car. I prefer to enjoy the fact it was nimble as hell. Such as the time I had someone pull ahead of my at 90 on the open road, move over right in front of me and slam the brakes. How many cars can do a lane change fast enough to save you from a rear ender at those speeds, and not risk flying out of control?

Other fastest car I've driven was a corvette on a closed road coarse. I'm not sure exactly how fast I got up to, considering I don't think the short straights were meant for 3 digit speeds, never mind the slalom... that's bliss. [:D]

Speed is addictive, but speed combined with handling is the best!

I recently drove down the German autobahn at 110mph.

Whats the fastest you've ever driven a car? (NB not a motorbike, and being a passenger at high speed doesnt count)

E

I shot a butt plug out of my ass.  Felt like it was going about 150mph.  Does that count?  (I'm sure I looked very ladylike)

ArmoredOne -> RE: fastest you've ever driven? (11/9/2008 11:06:05 PM)

Are we counting open roads where everyone can drive, or closed tracks, like straight-a-ways and what not?

I think the fastest period was in a Lotus Esprit with a v-12 and supercharger, which i personally thought was overkill.  Needle went to 200 and it was buried.  Was a closed course, so don't freak.

Open road...

Either I-29 between Mound City and Rockport or down on I-35S just before OKC... Both times, the Probe I had was set at 140 and the needle was buried.

Yeah, I gots me a lead foot.  Sue me.
