Strangely enough, I had perfect control while driving, but had a hard time maintaining control when slowing down.

Anyone know why that was?

When you brake, the weight of the car shifts forward and over the front wheels. All that weight, combined with the force of braking being done mostly with the front wheels, makes the steering feel a lot harder (or more "squishy). If the car is a rear-wheel driven vehicle, the rear end of the car, now with a bit less weight over the drive wheels, may feel like it wants to step out of line, particularly if you're trying to turn and brake hard at the same time.

That's why people can make donuts with rear-wheel drive cars.

i was 18, was tired of buying used cars that broke down so i paid 6,000 in cash for a Yugo.  (please be kind to me lol).  i got that thing up to 80 mph maybe for 10 minutes before the engine blew.  it was screeching and vibrating like mad, if i wouldn't have been so scared it might have been arousing.  it's not the fastest i've gone in a car, but it was the scariest time i've had going sorta fast in a car.  yeah, i went back to buying used cars for a while after that one. It's not funny that Christine spent $6K on that weed whacker, but it is funny that it blew up. I had a Vega that blew up while going down the road. Just because I was pissed I wanted everyone to feel my angst so I drove the damn thing home twenty miles, thick greenish-white smoke billowing out from it.

(Technically, either the head gasket blew or a crack in the block developed, but the engine lasted until I shut it off. Then it seized.)

IAMChristine -> RE: fastest you've ever driven? (11/10/2008 12:54:25 PM)

it is funny now but i didn't think it was then.  someone stopped and gave me a ride home, a stranger no less (yes we used to be able to do that in the olden days).  my dad brought me back so we could tow it and he could barely drive he was laughing so hard.  he was sitting next to one pissed off, attitudinal 18 year old in the truck that day.

Would you believe there are now collectors of the remaining Yugos? In any condition!

You did keep that corpse, didn't you?

:-D

I've driven over 100 MPH with my current car... a 2002 PT Cruiser. It handled the speed well.

IAMChristine -> RE: fastest you've ever driven? (11/10/2008 1:06:17 PM)

are you kidding me? my mom wouldn't let me keep it in the drive way, she said it "brought down the value of the landscaping."  (kiss kiss mum)  if only i had vision for the future, whoda thunk people would actually be collecting those now?

sappatoti -> RE: fastest you've ever driven? (11/10/2008 1:08:58 PM)

My mother once took a no longer working Chrysler New Yorker, opened the trunk, filled it with dirt, and planted annuals in it. The window boxes hanging from the doors was a nice touch too.

My father got the hint.

(That car was a screamer... had a police interceptor drive line in it. Too bad my father thought that plain old tap water would suffice as engine coolant during upstate NY winters. [8|] )

happypervert -> RE: fastest you've ever driven? (11/10/2008 2:47:24 PM)

about 115-120 for short periods here and there

and an autobahn like experience was being in a line of about 6 cars going 95-100 down I95 in North Carolina for about an hour or so. I felt like a NASCAR driver. heh

girlygurl -> RE: fastest you've ever driven? (11/10/2008 4:31:16 PM)

While I was driving, a little over 100... with someone else driving much much faster!!!!!

I feel the need, the need for speed! wooo hoooo

Odd choice of rear end setup for road racing, solid axle and tall sidewall tires.

There's really no way to put an IRS into those cars without spending a ridiculous amount of money on the project, for a result that gets you almost no benefit. For the time they were on the road these cars were some of the best handling beasts around, solid rear end or not.

Ahh, I've never driven one, but I still wouldn't choose a 50-series tire on a road course car ('course, I probably wouldn't buy a car with a history if I were just going to gut it, but I'm no fun that way). They were light cars for what they were (odd to think that they're lighter than a Dodge Neon ).

I shot a butt plug out of my ass.  Felt like it was going about 150mph.  Does that count?  (I'm sure I looked very ladylike)

Damn, I've never gotten one going nearly that fast, but then I always make sure to sit down before I sneeze [:-] Have to try with a jelly, though- that silicone ricochets like a motherfucker.

I love the PT Cruiser I bought.. (the ex/roomie now has it) I usually do about 90 going to work or on the highway... I have pushed it to about 120 going back and forth from Tampa to Naples when I was getting ready to move up here every other day or so.

Even at those speeds it handles well. Has good safety ratings, tons of space.. and pick up and go. Not to mention it is not a damn minivan!

Gwyn,
wanting to buy another one.

UncleNasty -> RE: fastest you've ever driven? (11/11/2008 12:49:12 PM)

Why don't bikes count?

195mph on a Honda Blackbird, and 225mph on a Suzuki Hayabusa. Both were perfomrance enhanced and both still had some throttle left.

I had a 70 Volkswagon Camper. Man oh man. 0-60 in 27.6 seconds.

105 on a closed road, where I fond that I still had a passing gear. That was the point when I backed off. Top speed may have been 110 or 115, but I was no longer looking, I was watching the road.

But to still have a passing gear ? WTF are you going to need apassing gear to pass, oh, oh yeah. LE on the autobahn.

You know it was like last year that Germany introduced it's first speed limit. Correct me if I am wrong.

T
You are wrong. There have been speed limits for years on die Autobahnen in built-up areas and major interchanges/exits.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autobahn
I wish the US would adopt fines for driving in the left lane when the right lane is free.
"
  • The right lane must be used when it is free, (Rechtsfahrgebot) and the left lane is generally intended for passing manoeuvres only. Drivers using the left lane when the other lanes are free may be fined by autobahn police.
  • Overtaking on the right (undertaking) is forbidden, except in traffic jams where it may be practiced with caution. The fact that the car overtaken is illegally occupying the left-hand lane is not an acceptable excuse. In these cases the police will routinely stop and fine both drivers.
  • Not allowing faster cars to overtake one's own car if the traffic situation allows it (e.g. by occupying the left-hand lane for a longer period of time) may be considered coercion[8]."

I thought there were no speed limits myself until I encountered them around Mannheim back in 2000 when driving from Alsace up to Frankfurt.

Fastest I've ever driven was about 120mph on the A8 between Munich and Salzburg. I've done 110 or so in Sadie here in the US. I just don't think her rollbars would give much protection at all if I somehow (almost impossible, given her weight and low center of gravity) managed to roll her.

Hmmmmm, about 100; was en route to my best friend's wedding and made myself late because I got it in my head at the last minute that she needed flowers, so stopped to procure some worthy of her.  Got a weird feeling and started decelerating right before the cop came into view...he clocked me in the 80's.  I said, "Officer, I'm on my way to my best friend's wedding".  The nice gentleeman radioed the courthouse to let them know I'd be a few minutes late and gave me a ticket anyway.

104 octane racing fuel (or better)

575 hp Dyno tested to the rear tires

I built the car for road racing not drag racing.

Odd choice of rear end setup for road racing, solid axle and tall sidewall tires.

Hope you replaced the rods, too... at that CR and displacement you'd need to be turning more than 8 grand to get 575 hp at the wheels, that's a lot of strain.

    - Odd choice of rear end setup . . . -
Well, those are all good observations.  Road racing wasn’t really it’s true design.  It was the closest thing I could think of that resembled what I was really doing.

I had to go substantially faster than the 170-180 mph pursuit helicopters
I had be able to accelerate very quickly in short distance city environments
I had to be able to drive through low scrub and on beach sand
I had to have plenty of room to hide the police, aviation and marine band radios
I needed room to hide a police band amp/broadcaster (jammer)

I needed a remote operated plate mask built into the rear bumper (MI only required rear plates)
I needed large drop boxes equal to 2 x paper grocery bags full

Hence the high ground clearance, fast accelerating car with a top end over 200 mph.  Had I mentioned the sets of off road and highway tires, that there was no spare tire or tire well as well as the twin drop boxes with remote cable releases that mounted in the under carriage, it would have made more sense to you.  I no longer handle contraband and should not have tried to avoid the issue in the first place,  It would have made more sense.

    -Gear Ratio
Good catch on the gear ratio, It must have been 391 not 396.  I remeber that 355 was the highway gear and 411 was the dragster's gear.  Because it was a very special purpose car, I needed to accelerate and have a top end.  391 was the lowest gear in the acceleration range.  The Volvo overdrive allowed the high end speed, I just had to flip the switch.  200 mph top end yet enough raw accelleration to pull the front off the ground from a dead start or squawk the tires while rolling at 55 mph.  It was a monster set up.

    -8,000+ rpm motor
The motor was loosely based on the LH1 designs.  Yes, rods were replaced, everything was blue printed, balanced, polished, ported or milled.  I just don’t recall every single thing we did.  The designer guaranteed I could touch 9,000 rpm and do 8,000 rpm steady when he was done.  He was right and it was an outstanding short block V8…  I had hired the guy who owned and built the NHRA title holding Orange Thunder fuel dragster (late 70s, maybe early 80s) to consult on the motor and frame designs.  He referred me to “Corky”, a fellow Detroiter, who was also an industry famous motor designer/builder and he did the heads and other motor work.

Eventually I stopped handling contraband and took the car back to the Orange Thunder guy (Corky was in prison) where he drilled and tapped the motor to install a Fogger commercial dragster NO2 system and added a B&M bent intake  blower (under the hood style blower) so we could lower the compression ratio.  Yes, I once again had to have custom motor mounts and shim the tranny mounts to lower the engine because the blower just missed clearing the hood by a ½ inch.  Just for grins, they did the math on the blower & nitrous, it was 4 digit horse power.

At the old high compression ratio, the damned pistons, especially the #1 piston, would burn through in a few thousand miles.  Durability was one thing we did not discuss at the design table (my bad).  Everyone was a racer so if the car made it through a ¼ mile drag race or a 500 mile road race, it was sound design by their history, exposure and experience.  I should have told them that not only did it need to pull wheelies (it did BTW) and cruise constantly at 200 mph, it also had to go several thousand miles without breaking. . . LOL

After the first breakdown on a trip to Florida, they installed an internal timing advance for the MSD system.  That way I could advance the timing for acceleration (that burnt up the pistons) only when I wanted it.  That doubled the life of the pistons and I would get 5,000 miles or so out of them.  My trips to FL were bimonthly and racked up about 2,400 miles round trip.  I basically had to get pistons replaced as preventative monthly maintenance.  I couldn’t afford a breakdown on the road.  One day I should write about my adventures in the underground.

What do you mean, bikes don't count!

    Bugger!

185 ish mph on the new (then) Silverstone bypass in England on a Blackbird. Bloody hard to see the speedo clearly at that rate! Mind you, the whole world begins to blur...

    Wasn't me officer, honest :)

    Regards to all.
