My understanding, which was backed up earlier, is that you cannot buy Vodka or Gin or other spirits in supermarkets there. Or  maybe you can in the states that I have not visited.

You can buy all spirits in the supermarket's. I havent seen a state that you couldnt. Except on sunday before 12p.m.

I've lived places in the US where alcohol is not sold at all, dry counties in Alabama, places where alcohol is only sold in state run stores, Kansas, places where alcohol is only sold in package stores, Georgia, places where beer and wine is sold in supermarkets and places where supermarkets sold everything.

After the repeal of prohibition each state is allowed to regulate alcohol sales differently and their is a lot of different ways of doing it.

When my older brother 1st moved to Texas (in the Air Force),he told me that it was legal to have an open beer in the car while driving. That was the late '70s'.

Wow.

It was also it was legal to have a hand gun in the car,if it was out in the open.He (and his buddys)drove with one on the dash, while drink`n.

Wow.

We still can have an open container of alcohol in the car.  You can't be drinking and driving, but you can have a bottle with the seal cracked or a passenger that is drinking.  You can also have a gun in the car (without a permit) if you're on a journey, which is generally defined as 20 miles or more.  Of course, most of our counties are dry.

Texas doesn't have doesn't allow open containers anymore, but you can carry a gun in the car.  In Mississippi, you can drive and drink a beer as long as you're not over .08 BAC.  Missouri and Louisiana are the two most liberal drinking states, I've ever been in.  I was shocked the first time I went to New Orleans and saw drive through daiquiri place.  You could go through a drive through and get a daiquiri made to go!  In Missouri, they have no public intoxication law, and counties and cities are prohibited from going dry.  Both Louisiana and Missouri sell booze in convenient stores.  You can even buy those little airline sized bottles at the counter in most convenient stores I went into.

Owner, here in South Carolina you can have a loaded gun in your car in the glove box or center console, no "permit" required.
I have a "permit" so I can just carry one on my hip concealed.

I do think the UK is not prepared for guns and it would cause an increase in homicides. That don't have a culture of guns and there would be many more accidental shootings then murders.

I don't believe this to be at all true, but then I grew up in the east end and from personal experience I can definately say this isn't the case.  My dad grew up in the country and it wasn't the case for him either.  Guns and knives have always been a part of life.  I believe the biggest issue is the break down of family and that is pretty much all over the 'world' really.  I was taught how to respect the items carried and not abuse them.

quote:

How close together houses are is irrelevant and guns have nothing to do with crime. As stated there are countries with liberal gun laws without rampant crime.

Well I would say the majority of posters here have disagreed. They do have to do with crime as US posters have repeated over and over, its because of the potential of crime people want them.  The statement made about closeness of houses was to do with theft, not guns however and was just a throw away thought.

quote:

The UK and the US are countries under duress…either from ethnic violence, economic pressures, or outside threats. Anytime there are these kinds of pressures civil unrest will manifest itself into crime.

I wouldn't disagree however I believe that the UK just seems a little less paranoid over it.  Your example may be right, but then that could be said for countries across the world.  It isn't just a US and UK thing.

quote:

Guns are just the most efficient affordable tool for crime or self-defense. In the UK I think it is personal assaults and knives. In the US it is guns…both kill.

I thought guns had nothing to do with crime(your quote above).

quote:

The solution is not to open a closed gun society and make guns available…but neither is the solution taking guns away from an open gun society. The solution is to solve the underling causes. We should spend time arguing over how to do that rather than to have guns are not.

I agree.  However the thing seems to be that some of the peoples here from the US are insisting that we should be allowed guns.  Honestly?  Those that want them already have them, legal or not.  And those that do not, don't.  It's just not a big thing over here as it seems to be in the states and to be told by people who do not live here how life should be, or being told that 'its ok, we will save you ass again' is pretty insulting and I am surprised people in the US even still think like that.

We aren't a bunch of immature halfwits who have never seens guns or fired them - we simply don't seem to have the need nor desire or even paranoiawhatifs that the US has.  But then we are a group of countries with a common link unlike the land locked US who has the risk of invasion I guess.  Get back to us when Cornwall decides to revolt and become its own country or we have a falling out with scotland etc.  When the UK isn't united anymore, then you might see the paranoia setting in.

You noticed that too?

Yep funny eh?

Perhaps the Brits here should start insisting that Americans do things differently. I think you should be able to buy alcohol in supermarkets. Why don't you take a vote on it. Then you can be like us.

Um, you can buy alcohol in supermarkets, have been for years. As far as these tedious fucking gun debates, who cares. Although Susie I will say you mentioned in the last gun thread why you had never heard a valid or an actual reason for someone to have to have one, and I relayed to you a very personal story of when my home was entered by drunken men in the middle of the night thinking I was gone on a trip, when in fact only my ex had gone and  I was home alone. I was sleeping on the couch, and had a loaded *of course handgun right on the endtable. That I do believe may have saved my life. Whatever it may or may not have done, you ignored it. Rhi also posted a personal story which you did not comment on either.  So I did get the feeling that even when you are given what you asked for, you still will not listen.

I am a liberal, I despise the NRA, I think if you want a gun go get one, if you don't, don't. My god, this gets old.

You can and have been able to purchase all liquor, beer, wine, spirits, etc. for almost a decade. The state discontinued overseeing what where called "agency" liquor stores and every single supermarket has a full liquor department. I have traveled throughout much of the states, it is that way everywhere I have been. I am not sure what states you are referring to.

Get back to us when Cornwall decides to revolt and become its own country

Hey, don't say such things, I live on their border ! Anyways they could'nt invade here, they would not afford to get over the Tamar bridge.

Anyway, none of them will revolt, there are too many English in there, English with money and often authority, same as it has always been I suppose since the Norman conquest.

Maybe it might be more of a case of England setting them adrift if finances become so tight, they have to think about that.

I don't know about that A.  I cannot speak for all the countries, but when I was in Cornwall, I would have and still do support their stake at independance, so I wouldn't count on the fact that they are far more multicultural.

Hmmm the problem is they are so so so small. Not sure how sustainable they would be.

Ah well, I could argue dual nationality if they ever did come to be a country on their own, celtic inheritence often went down the maternal line.

What makes me wonder is if we think about your gun culture as potential tourists, what is worse, us thinking everyone is packing a weapon, or you lot when you come over here with all our reports of knifings and feral youngsters, without your gun, how safe do you feel ?

If I ever get a chance to go over there, I really doubt that guns are going to be a concern for me. Why wouldn't I feel safe over there?
