Henry Morganthau was a close, personal friend of FDR, his Secretary of the Treasury from 1934 to 1945, probably the record,  and a highly respected figure in the world of finance in his day. He chaired the Bretton Woods meetings that established the International Monetary Fund and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (World Bank).

The link below is the U.S. Treasury bio on Morganthau and might be helpful.

Bishop: An economic crisis requires spending - fast

Sherwood Bishop, TEXAS STATE UNIVERSITY-SAN MARCOS Wednesday, February 11, 2009

In a recent column, Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, stated her opposition to the economic stimulus bill being considered by the Senate. She began by writing "In one of history's more candid reflections, Henry Morgenthau Jr., Treasury Secretary under President Franklin D. Roosevelt, confessed, 'We have tried spending money. We are spending more than we have ever spent before, and it does not work.' "

Though Morgenthau was Roosevelt's treasury secretary, he was an orthodox economist who opposed Keynesian economics and New Deal spending, consistently calling for a balanced budget and reducing the national debt, even during the depression. In 1937, Morgenthau and other conservatives, claiming that the country's economic crisis had ended, convinced Roosevelt to cut many New Deal programs. As a result, the country fell into another recession, and unemployment rates, after falling rapidly for several years, began rising again.

Morgenthau also fought (unsuccessfully) against the veterans' bonus (for World War I vets), the precursor of the World War II GI Bill. Considering that he was against the New Deal spending programs from the start, it's not surprising that he would claim they hadn't worked.

His claim about unemployment was entirely incorrect. The unemployment rate in 1933, when Roosevelt took office, was 24.9 percent. By 1937, it had fallen to 14.3 percent. After the premature cuts in New Deal spending, unemployment quickly rose to 19 percent in 1938. Government spending was increased again and unemployment fell to 17.2 percent in 1939, when Morgenthau spoke, 14.6 percent in 1940 and 9.9 percent in 1941. The drops in unemployment rates were actually much larger than the numbers indicate, because in the 1930s, the millions of workers employed in rural electrification, highway construction and other federal projects were officially considered unemployed, since they did not work for private firms.

1. I think Obama will be more successfull..Not when he gets banks to lend money to businesses, but helps business not need to borrow money in the first place.

2. I think Obama will be successful when he reforms how Wall St. works.. It's too volatile and too much of a gamble. The stock market should be a long term investmant, not a daily gamble. Personally, I'd reduce trading days to once a week. Don't like it? Tough..for six other days you are going to have to trust that your money might be doing something for you, and make a judgement one day out of the week. First time investments are for a minimum of 1 year.

3. I think Obama will be successful when he turns the credit card companies and says, "You know what? Regardless of anything, 6 per cent interest on the card is enough. No more of this 20+ per cent crap...no matter what.. If you can't get by on that..its time to be more selective about who you are sending your pre-approved mailouts too..

4. Obama will be successful when he starts t repair how the rest off the world looks at America.

5. Obama will be be successful when the war on drugs becomes the blitzkrieg on Drugs.

6. Obama will be uccessful when he stops our jobs from going overseas. Helps create new jobs here. And strengthens the middle class and lower class. Part of that is showing corporations why the little guy really is an important part of thier organization. Too many corporations (and many Republicans) ook at their best entry level labor as nothing more than a necessary evil. The American worker needs to be revalued in America. Paying Americans to work for you isn't just a necessary evil..Its something to be proud of. By doing so, you are doing your civic duty by making the Foundation of America O(The american worker) strong.

So far Obama is acting way too much like a *Republican* for my liking.
Bailing out banks, insurance cos., brokerage houses. What's next, "amnesty" for illegal aliens? Those are all things fresh out of the Bush playbook!
How about some "bottom up" stimulus for *working class people* instead of hundreds of billions to weak businesses that should go out of business? That's why we have bankruptcy laws!
I'm still waiting for the "Change." I don't think anyone wants four more years of Bush.
I'll consider Obama a success when he starts enforcing *all* of our laws and gets big business O-U-T of our government.
