Nothing arbitrary about it.The tests have been held ,the data is in...guns kill people in alarming numbers...conclusion reached....we need to do something to address the problem.Simple wasn't it...and not in the least arbitary.

Yes it is arbitray because your "solution" has no thought behind it.  "Gun kill people!  We have to keep guns out of the hands of certain individuals!"  It is a knee jerk, feel good reaction.

"I want to keep guns out of the hands of certain individual, therefore I'm a good person."  What a crock of shit.  I'd also like to keep guns out of the hands of certain individuals - I just to want to trample the rights of  others to do so.  The price is too high and the "solution" will not work anyway.

Heroin was deemed a problem so we banned heroin.  Has that solution worked?

This from a man who just advocated allowing passengers to carry guns on flights. You have sold all credibility in defence of a rediculous assertion.

Well then I have to ask what you mean by arbitrarily.  There are established procedures for amendments.

I mean passing laws that restrict my Second Amendment rights without going through the established procedures for amending the Constitution.

Oh lighten the fuck up already, will you?  Jesus H. Christ!  Do you seriously think I have a problem with security checks at airports?  I know of nothing in the Constitution that says I have a right to fly on airplanes.  It does, however say I have the right to keep and bear arms.

Doesn't make it right.

I do agree.

Ideally we should not have that invasion of our privacy.

But we accept it as a safety measure, as irritating as it is.

But guns are to be exempt?

Even though far more people die every year from gun deaths than were killed in the terrorist attacks?

Yeah.  I advocate carrying guns on airplanes.  I really really do.

Beats me.  I'm not a member of the NRA.

You just don't get it.  This has nothing to do about guns.  It's about wanting to restrict peoples rights in the belief that this will create a safer society.  Once you agree to that, you have no basis to upon which claim any other rights.  they are now all open to being legislated away in the name of safety.  Keep trying to legislate that perfect society.  I wish you luck on that.

No, actually, I don't.

This isn't to anyone in particular, just to the "usual suspects" in general...

The 2nd Amendment guarantees US citizens the right and the means to protect themselves against acts of violence. That some people elect not to exercise that right is a matter of personal choice, which I respect. However, when some of those who have elected to forego the exercise of that right end up dead as a consequence of their choice, the lesson to be learned is not that we'd all be safer if everybody was unprepared (or unable) to defend themselves.

Well, surprisingly, I have never felt the need to defend myself with firearms, even though I own firearms.

Which kind of makes me question whether some of the "usual suspects" watch too much TV.

And therin lies your problem.  Rights are not foolish.  Give away yours if you want to.  I prefer to keep mine.

With the right in such a mental funk, this serves as a morale booster, even if it`s an imagined victory.

In case there is a comprehension problem....what I said was your position concerning those rights was IMO foolish...not as you twisted it...that rights were foolish.Try again, perhaps next shot you will get closer.

I've been through a lot of airports lately and it pisses me off every time I do. Still, I really don't have to prove innocence there, just my identity - along with not doing something stupid.

I don't know about anyone else, but the last time I bought a gun I had to fill out paperwork, go to the sheriff's office and wait 5 days... and we need to make that process more difficult?

It's rather notable too that many of the breakdown shooters would have passed any tests.

But I don't go to gun shows. What I do know is that many more murders occur one at time than en masse, yet it is the en masse that drives the desire for legislation that will mostly affect legal people.

Really?

So you've never had to take off your shoes, coat, and belt to go through an airport security checkpoint?

You've never had to empty your pockets into one of those little trays to be x-rayed?

You've never been pulled aside to have the wand search?

You've never had your carry-on gone through piece by piece?

Yet you believe that somehow gun owners are being singled out for "en masse" legislation?

No. I actually think you don't get it because you are so narrowly focused on one issue that you believe in you are refusing to see the broader picture.

Our rights are restricted on a daily basis.

How many cameras are trained on you every time you leave your house?

From the Wal-Mart to the red-light cameras we are under almost constant observation.

Yet, while I don't agree, most people find this an acceptable trade-off for safety.

So again, why are guns any different?

No.not a test a background check...you know to keep guns out of the hands of all the people you people say you need the guns to protect yourselves from.
Is it a requirement you might fail...of course not so why be an obstuctionist.

You already do, unless you are buying face to face from someone from your same state.

My posistion is that rights are good to have.  If you regard that posistion as foolish... well then... where does that leave us?  Personally, I regard those who would trade away their rights and freedoms for safety (or rather, the illusion of safety) as foolish.

So your posistion (which you don't agree with) is: our rights and freedoms are violated every day, therefore it is okay to violate our rights and freedoms?

Gun aren't any different.  The same goes for them as for all our rights.  That's the big picture.  If it's okay to take away one right, then why is it not okay to take away any of the others?
