I was in a Target and asked where I could breast feed my baby. They sent me into the bathroom with a chair. Thats the U.S. for ya!

You were expecting perhaps a lounge? It's a store, not a nursery.

I was expecting to be treated with some dignity. The cafeteria or an office would have been much better than the bathroom.

I think it's a weird American taboo - again, I blame those fucking puritans for instilling this kind of perversity in the culture.

Don't get caught using the whole 'urine is sterile' myth.  It is whilst inside you.  If you have germs in your tract or the minute it hits air or skin or ground, it's not anymore.

Hey I'm not advocating having a sip...(NASA...I'm looking at you here), but supposedly between the inside of the human mouth and a human's urine....all things being equal and healthy, the mouth is a cesspool while the urine is not.

Loki.. I do adore you.. but in this I disagree.  The woman is NOT flopping her tit out for any lascivious purpose.  She is feeding her child in the manner that her body was built to do.  If you are STARING at her tit, thats on you, not her.

ETA:  So.. a nursing mother should not leave her home?? LOKI!! I'm ashamed of you...  I thought you were more tolerant than that.   *sighs*

Greedy, thank goodness. You know I'm a rational thinking person. I'm not trying to be super-ass here (at least not in this thread ;)

I'm just saying. There was a time when tender private things like this were done at home
. A time when no one expected to see a nursing mother because her husband or family treated her like a queen and got anything she desired brought right to her bed side.

But in today's increasingly frivolous world, women walk around with little yappy dogs in their purse. Anything becomes "an accessory" and not a life the person is responsible for. In my opinion, if a um is that young, it doesn't need to be out anyway. I would be appalled at my significant other if she were to take mine out "to McDonald's" in such a vulnerable time in its life.

This is an increasingly dangerous time. People will victimize another person for $4 and kicks on a Friday night. I would not want my tiny little precious life risked that haphazardly.

Yes it's a 'tender, miraculous thing' between the parent and Um........but it also puts both in an unnecessarily vulnerable position. And there's no reason to me to risk that.

Why should she 'have' to? Why should she risk her child in this dangerous world? Because she "can?"

Oh for crying out loud! I am just laughing at the bolded part. You do realize there "was a time" when women had no choice BUT to breastfeed their children don't you?

I have to say, I am totally flabbergasted at the ignorance conveyed in your words Loki. Most women do not have the luxury of lazing about the house feeding a mini me while the rest of the world takes care of errands, running older mini me's around, etc.. The next time I meet a mother that needs to breastfeed while doing all the other tasks that require her to leave the house, I will have her contact you for a check to pay someone else to handle her light work for her.

As far as doing it in public, there are ladies' rooms you can go to. Now hold on, I know before the thought even reaches your lips you're going to say "I don't have to feed my UM in a RESTROOM, GROSS!"

But don't bullshit me. I've seen the inside of a ladies' room before. They are lounges compared to a men's room. Hell, some even have a freakin' couch. It's not a sesspool in there and its a hell of a lot more secure than a blanket that the UM can push off repeatedly.

Some places do provide for nursing mothers, and i had no issue using them...but they are not the norm. However, there is no way i would consider nursing in a public bathroom.

Well, unless you are discussing adult babies here (this is a bdsm site after all) - mouth health isn't really part of the equasion.

Well, in the line of work I'm entering, by the time I'd even consider reproduction a viable option, I'll have a position that lets me work pretty much when and where I want. The guy I idolize who spoke in my networking class works from work, works from home.....works at 8 am or 8 pm...basically whenever the hell he wants, so long as it gets done. And he makes mad money. Of course he pointed to his twin daughters to indicate where the mad money goes and why he's not 'rich.'

Please hold your flabbergasting until the end. That post was 3 pages ago.

I don't think there should be laws against it, and I don't mind seeing it if it's done with discretion, but at the same time, it's not something I would choose to do in public.  Yes, it's normal, healthy, natural etc, but in my view it's a private thing.

Well that's a shame. Because at least 2 have relaxed their stance and found common ground rather than just remaining defensive at whatever perceived slight may or may not have been there.

Do you know that when the infant cries, the breasts tingle and the milk starts flowing freely  ?

Yep...leaves unsightly stains on the shirt, too. Kinda embarrassing to happen in public, don't you think?

I've not seen a work typed by you that shows you've relaxed your stance. Obviously you believe the same as you did in the beginning. Why on earth would I change my opinion???

What are you suggesting, that the mother and baby stay in the house for 18 months?

I had that happen several times when I was breastfeeding, one time at an exclusive restaurant (to celebrate her birth). Luckily I had some expressed milk onhand but my nursing pads got soaked.

No it isn't embarassing. There are two solutions that prevent any embarassment. Pads that go in the bra to soak up any leakage and feeding.

No, it's not embarrassing, not if one breastfeeds immediately, without worrying how it may impact the heightened sensitivities of certain members of the public :-) .

Perhaps it's you that have a problem with it. Have you ever wondered why the thought of nursing mothers affected you so badly?
