MysticFireTopaz -> RE: What is your cat doing? (6/18/2010 11:27:20 PM)

Angel is so cute.  I have a detached garage.  She listens for my car pulling into the garage, then waits for me at the door and walks me from the garage to the house.

It is very warm out.
I have had an upset tummy since before 4am; this can only mean one thing: 3 of the 4 cats are near or on top of me instead of some in cool spot.
It is non-negotiable. They are insisting it is in the fine print of the contract.

Angel passed all her health screenings and was vaccinated today, so she is going to become part of the household.  Now the fun part of introducing her to the other cats.

LOL.

She is up in the car port rafters.

I doubt I will oil her again.

Just got back from Petsmart, where I bought a litter box and food dishes for Angel's "sanctuary" away from the other cats.  I wanted to begin her introduction this afternoon, but she can't be budged her nap on the porch.  I think she's worn out from the ordeal of the trip to the vet and all the health screens, examinations, and vaccinations she received today.

I haven't read all the posts but I hope your kitty has come down by now...with my first kitty who died 10 years ago I used  to put a dab of petroleum jelly on her nose and it always worked...My new kitty sometimes seems like she is going to have one but nothing ever comes up...I use a special brush on her called "The Furminator" and it really gets out the under coat....It isn't that cheap but I would suggest buying one!

Sassy is hiding cause she saw me take out the olive oil for dinner.

PA's cat must have put the word out. [:D]

MysticFireTopaz -> RE: What is your cat doing? (6/19/2010 8:04:04 PM)

I had my first "getting to know you session" with Angel and my other two cats.  It was actually much calmer than I expected.  Angel went exploring in my office.  Lily met her there and hissed at her.  Angel assumed a submissive stance, that seemed to placate Lily, and Lily went under the desk.

Angel then went and explored the living room, kitchen, and sanctuary room (aka guest bathroom) I set up for her.  She even used the litter box in the sanctuary room.  Angel then went into the master bedroom, Misty's territory.  Little, docile Misty jumped up on the bed and stared down Angel, who is twice her size.  Angel went running out of the room.

After the initial introductions were over, Lily meowed several times in a displeased tone to let me know she did not appreciate the newcomer.  I praised and reassured all three cats.

arrrrghhhh Gabriel ate a fly!.. He stalked it and ate it right in front of me.......ewwwwwww

His butt found a way to leave the apartment from under the kitchen sink and out by the utility closet. I come home and his butt is outside playing with 5 kittens and 3 cats. My upstairs neighbors Dr. Dolittle cat farm.   Cabinet doors are now secured.

Mystic, is this the white cat that kept following you home?

And a question to the group...I'm gone about 9 hours a day, is it time to get Gabriel a playmate, and would a kitten be best?
(If I take one of the kittens or if I take the Mama cat who Gabriel already loves and plays with, to the vet we will have to go...)  edited to add....visions of my stuff being torn up with a kitten...and mama cat is used to being outside.

Can't believe he ate a fly...he better not try to kiss me....ewwwwwwww

Binx is outside, hiding under a car.  It seems like she almost got into an accident and she is spooked now.

Someone get me a bag of catnip...I can get her back in the apartment.

Yes, Angel is the white cat that kept following me home.  For two weeks, I ran ads in the local paper and posted flyers to see if I could locate an owner for her, but no one responded.  I also checked the lost pets section of the local paper daily.  I had the vet scan her for a microchip, but she didn't have one.  So it looks like I have another fur baby.

Keep her locked up in her own special room (maybe yours?) with a litterbox and food and toys for a few weeks. Allow the cats to smell each other through the doors, but that is all.

After a few weeks, bring her out into the main area in a kitty crate. Give all the cats treats fairly close to her crate (of course she gets them as well.) After a half hour or so put her back.

Do this several times a day over several more weeks (yes, this does take time but is worth it!) It doesn't have to be treats every time, it can be cat nip, or a favorite play session. The point is, when the new kitty is there, something good happens!

After several weeks of fun time in the crate, you get to try doing the same thing without the crate. (although if the kitties are touching noses and not fighting, you can go ahead and stop the crating.) Remember, short, fun times, and then the kitty is put away again.

Always greet the boss kitty first (I'm assuming you have more than the new one and another one) and then the other cat that's been there longer. The new kitty is greeted last, fed last, etc. Don't give them a reason to dislike her.

Some other things to try is to put a drop or two of vanilla on all the cat's backs, so their "scents" are the same, try spraying some feliway before introductions if there is too much strife, and there's also something for calming upset cats you can put in their water if they are too angry and emotional. (I can get the names if you need them)

Make sure there are plenty of litterboxes, and plenty of vertical areas the cats can relax on. (like cat tress and such.)

Take it much more slowly than you think you need to, and this should work out well in the end. If you need more help, let me know.

Just from our own experiences rescuing grown cats and adopting a kitten, the older cats seem to tolerate a kitten better. That's what I would suggest. And do the slowwww introduction I just outlined above.

You can also put it on the top of their paw and they will lick it off. I suggest the malt flavored ones you can get at any pet store. But your kitty won't need any more for a while. How much oil did you get down her anyway?
