Just got back from Petsmart, where I bought a litter box and food dishes for Angel's "sanctuary" away from the other cats.  I wanted to begin her introduction this afternoon, but she can't be budged her nap on the porch.  I think she's worn out from the ordeal of the trip to the vet and all the health screens, examinations, and vaccinations she received today.

Keep her locked up in her own special room (maybe yours?) with a litterbox and food and toys for a few weeks. Allow the cats to smell each other through the doors, but that is all.

After a few weeks, bring her out into the main area in a kitty crate. Give all the cats treats fairly close to her crate (of course she gets them as well.) After a half hour or so put her back.

Do this several times a day over several more weeks (yes, this does take time but is worth it!) It doesn't have to be treats every time, it can be cat nip, or a favorite play session. The point is, when the new kitty is there, something good happens!

After several weeks of fun time in the crate, you get to try doing the same thing without the crate. (although if the kitties are touching noses and not fighting, you can go ahead and stop the crating.) Remember, short, fun times, and then the kitty is put away again.

Always greet the boss kitty first (I'm assuming you have more than the new one and another one) and then the other cat that's been there longer. The new kitty is greeted last, fed last, etc. Don't give them a reason to dislike her.

Some other things to try is to put a drop or two of vanilla on all the cat's backs, so their "scents" are the same, try spraying some feliway before introductions if there is too much strife, and there's also something for calming upset cats you can put in their water if they are too angry and emotional. (I can get the names if you need them)

Make sure there are plenty of litterboxes, and plenty of vertical areas the cats can relax on. (like cat tress and such.)

Take it much more slowly than you think you need to, and this should work out well in the end. If you need more help, let me know.

Thanks, great suggestions!

arrrrghhhh Gabriel ate a fly!.. He stalked it and ate it right in front of me.......ewwwwwww

His butt found a way to leave the apartment from under the kitchen sink and out by the utility closet. I come home and his butt is outside playing with 5 kittens and 3 cats. My upstairs neighbors Dr. Dolittle cat farm.   Cabinet doors are now secured.

Mystic, is this the white cat that kept following you home?

And a question to the group...I'm gone about 9 hours a day, is it time to get Gabriel a playmate, and would a kitten be best?
(If I take one of the kittens or if I take the Mama cat who Gabriel already loves and plays with, to the vet we will have to go...)  edited to add....visions of my stuff being torn up with a kitten...and mama cat is used to being outside.

Can't believe he ate a fly...he better not try to kiss me....ewwwwwwww

Just from our own experiences rescuing grown cats and adopting a kitten, the older cats seem to tolerate a kitten better. That's what I would suggest. And do the slowwww introduction I just outlined above.

Thank you blushes!!!!!!

Sassy is sleeping in my bed. She's curled up in the blankets. Mind you, the little brat was meowing at 7:30 this morning wanting me up, so I got up. NOW she's in my bed.

My cat is simmering. I like the crock pot for cats. The meat falls right off the bone!

Boo is spread out infront of the front door.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Well some people claim that if the meat is falling off the bone, you're a total cretin. They say that it should be cooked to where the meat is still firm and chewy. I guess it all depends on your tastes. [:D]

MysticFireTopaz -> RE: What is your cat doing? (6/20/2010 3:02:47 PM)

All three are taking a nap--a great idea on this 99 degree day.

PeanutTigerinBox -> RE: What is your cat doing? (6/20/2010 3:51:03 PM)

All four of them are outside...I think...earlier I intervened when spicy were having a shouting argument with another cat (normally I don't necessarily intervene as I read that it makes it worse as cats don't forget that there is still an argument outstanding, however I wasn't sure if it is him or my pregnant birman girl...).

Apart from that...

my "brave" birman girl just came in with a catched snail/slug [8|] After all I heard about those critters in regards to disease they tend to carry or can carry I took away her "great catch" and dumped it in a neighbour garden behind her back[>:] Now she is outside again and I hope she hasn't got the intention to keep me busy with more of them during the night [>:]

MysticFireTopaz -> RE: What is your cat doing? (6/22/2010 4:30:15 PM)

Now it looks like Angel prefers being an outdoor cat after all, despite being so insistent on getting inside my house for the last three weeks.  I set up a sanctuary room for her in my home, but soon she was wailing to get back outside, so I let her back out.  Since then, she has expressed no interest whatsoever in coming in the house again.  She's quite the little homebody--never leaves my porch.

MysticFireTopaz -> RE: What is your cat doing? (6/26/2010 10:54:05 AM)

Misty is still fascinated with my hair--loves to chew on it for some reason while purrng loudly.

MysticFireTopaz -> RE: What is your cat doing? (6/26/2010 4:15:43 PM)

Just had to go reapply my makeup after holding Angel.  She loves to lick my cheeks and takes off my blush in the process, LOL.

MysticFireTopaz -> RE: What is your cat doing? (7/1/2010 3:16:25 PM)

Angel and Pokey the tortoise are enjoying a sunny afternoon on the mat on the porch.  Lily is snooping around, looking for some mischief to get into.  Misty is sleeping on our bed.

PeanutTigerinBox -> RE: What is your cat doing? (7/1/2010 3:25:26 PM)

my pregnant nutter just ate her 4th snail/slug and just vomited it out again...underneath my sofa [:'(][:(]

Dovie, a second kitty is ALWAYS a great idea, and if she's getting along w/the other ones already, just scoop up one of them.  Contrary to popular belief, mth and old wives tales, cats are VERY social animals, and do well when they have a companion.  My oldest one, KB, was my dog's buddy, they went everywhere together, slept together, played with each other all the time.  When Shiloh had to be put down, KB was heartbroken.....he wouldn't let anyone near his dog bed, and we put their dry food in his feeder, and KB wouldn't let anyone eat out of it.....I was in a house with 2 other kitties (roomies).  We went to breakfast one morning, saw a yard sale sign and decided to check it out.....was the "free kittens" sign and ended up taking all 4 of the little buggers home.  I found homes for two and kept the other two.  That was 7 years ago, and KB is a great mommy to his little brothers.

I then took in a little female a couple of years ago...she's either a Maine Coon, or Norwegian Forest cat.....a little beauty.  Unfortunately, the two midddle boys still pick on her, but she's gotten to where she'll give 'em what for too when she's had enough.

PA, I'm guessing the oil situation was over a hairball?  Haven't gone that far back in the posts.....feed your kitty dry food that's formulated to prevent hairballs...I like Science Diet, but the big at food companies all have a hairball formula dry food.  And I also use the hairball goo....mine will only eat the malflavored stuf, they hate the salmon or seafood flavored stuff....can't say as I blame them, it stinks!  I learned of their dislike the hard way...the little snots went into the bedroom and rubbed and rolled on my bedding...I had glops of sticky goop all over the bed!   And brushing helps, if your kitteh will let you do it.

Yep, that's common practice in my house!  KB wants the warm spot.....and has me so trained that I still get up and put down food, only to grope back to bed to find him all curled up, nice and pwitty.....the first time he ever did that, I wasn't paying any attention to him and laid on him!  What lesson did he learn?  To at least be VISIBLE in the warm spot.....NOT waking up mom in the middle of her night?.......didn't even cross his furry little evil mind!
