The whole "Christians persecuted by the evil Soviets" line that keeps getting trotted out puzzles me, as there's never any mention of the Jewish and Muslim populations of Eastern Europe who didn't have any better a time.

Brain,

I'm an atheist, and I gotta say---

Give it rest. You just keep making the same point over and over. People get it.

Learn to live and let live...that, after all, is what you're asking of believers.

And be fair. Believers do a lot of good in the world as well. At its best, it's a healthy belief to hold.

Please. Let it go.

Oh, not so fast.

You want him to let it go but we must listen to the "believers" on a daily basis.

You need to only look at this forum for which side is more vocal.

Good point and when I browse the forums, I see a lot of threads bashing religion, but I don't see the ones claiming believing is the only true way to live. Maybe you could provide a few links from those believers who start these threads on a daily basis.

The truth is that godless communism, fascism, and other forms of totalitarian government have been responsible for well over 100 million deaths in the last 100 years alone.

Christianity is responsible for ending slavery, cannibalism, oppression of women, etc... throughout the world, not to mention scientific and medical advances.

Anyone can start a thread and make ridiculous claims and assertions, without a shred of historical fact, and it's never more evident than when people who hate their Creator decide to weigh in.

Um, I wouldn't mind it if you provided a few links yourself.

The 100 million - I assume that that's a combination of those killed in the Soviet Union and China?  Nazism was anti-Semitic and I recall it was biased against Catholics but was not overtly atheistic.

Christianity has opposed cannibalism in some African nations, agreed.  But I would argue that it accelerated cannibalism's demise, not that it caused it.  And I have no idea how it ended the oppression of women or what role it has played in promoting women's interests.

How has religion been responsible for scientific and medical advances?  I admit that it quit suppressing science, like it had done during the Dark Ages, but has religion funded scientific advances?

this is just my opinion...but Catholicism is one of the biggest offenders of oppression of women.

Masterjack54:  "my point, which you obviously mnissed, was that a small portion of the population are undermining the age old law that majority rules."

Yes. The United States has always believed that the "tyranny of the majority" is something to be avoided. It's what keeps us from slipping into becoming a totaltarian state where everyone is required to think, and act the same. That's why minority groups are allowed to gather, and form communities, become politically powerful, and then have the ability to change political policy to their favor. Just as women gained the right to vote, just as the abolishonists threw out slavery, how minorities gained equality, and how the GLBT community is fighting for it's basic rights here as well.

That's the basic idea behind America: self rule. No kings, no dictators, no mullahs, no Gods required. Just people, deciding what's right for them.

Sorry if you don't believe in that, anymore than I'm willing to believe in your "big bearded guy who sits in the clouds and tells us to kill people who don't believe in him" story.

Will the "we" was myself and Masterjack...But God bless you too rule...may miracles enter your life ...even if you are not able to see them for what they are.

Butch

Butch, I truly do see the miracles.

I just went downstairs to my refrigerator thinking I was out of beer, but lo and behold a twelve pack miraculously appeared.

I think Jesus was in my 'fridge and just like feeding the multitudes by multiplying the fish and the loaves he performed the miracle of turning my last beer into a twelve-pack.

Praise Jesus!!

(Either that or I forgot I went to the store and bought more.  But then we can still give him credit for giving me the unseen and unknown spiritual inspiration to go to the store to buy more.)

NOW you are truly going to Hell...you did not offer me one!!!

Butch

"Christianity is responsible for ending slavery, cannibalism, oppression of women..."

Yeah, and Hitler's Germany was responsible for pulling that country out of a depression and getting the trains to run on time, and the creation of the VW bug.... so what's your point? Even something that is utterly WRONG at it's core can do good things in the world. Yet, somehow, it always manages to come out on the bad side of the overall ledger in the end.

A bunch of kids thought it would be great to follow a religious leader back int he 80's. They'd give up sex, and they'd all dress the same, and they would live the life the Superior Beings wanted them to... Everything went fine for a while...but then the comet came, and their leader went nuts... they were known as the Heaven's Gate UFO cult.

I see lots of similarities here... sorry if you don't.

The nice thing about atheism is that you don't go to hell if you don't believe it.

K.

hehe...and you wouldn't go to heaven, either.  So where would the souls of atheists go?
Hmmm...could it be they don't believe they have a soul that would go to heaven or hell?
I'm suddenly picturing all these un-living essences just lurking around.
Purgatory??
LOL...I better quit thinking and just have another cup of coffee
