As an aside I liked how the author tried to make mental illness into a personal failing of the victim and therefore not something that society as a whole should deal with. You can always count on the WSJ.

BTW the linked article is not the source of the quote I requested.

Interesting that you would read it that way, Ken.  Pretending drug/alcohol abuse has no role to play...

BTW, the quote was my own words from a post earlier in the thread.  Perhaps try reading that before making demands about sources?

Where did I say that?

As a matter of fact I said the exact opposite
quote:

The fact is that long before 1989, the date of this editorial, I had heard from main stream media sources that homelessness was a complicated matter including mental illness and substance abuse.

Fox has never made a secret of the fact that they generally support ideals and people who have a certain mindset. Many of the other "mainstream media", on the other hand, attempt to portray themselves as without bias or agenda.

Fox's "Fair and Balanced" is a sarcastic and pointed reminder to the discerning public that this is not true.

So, what you are saying is all news is biased and instead of trying to find an unbiased source you are going to listen to the source that most closely aligns with your own bias.

And more to the point, he's acknowledging that Fox is lying when they claim to be fair and balanced. It's just a marketing slogan.

I think you are misreading my statement.

So was your statement meant to say that Fox's slogan "fair and balanced" should be meant to be read as a sarcastic comment that other news organizations are biased while Fox remains the only bastion of unbiased reporting? As someone used to Rupert Murdoch and the way he does business (take a look at the New York Post and his idea of journalism becomes obvious) I can't say as it's much of a believable option.

Medically speaking, its well known that many who have mental problems turn to drugs and alcohol in an attempt to self-medicate.

Yep.  And lots of others just get high because they like it, until that becomes the top priority in their lives.

Every body has their own story.Mine had nothing to do with drug alcohol or mental issues. And Ive worked with hundreds of people who were not wastes of space and time, they all had their stories, they all had their reasons. But labels stick like shit to a blanket. I have very little tolerence for anyone who want to put them all into one nasty little category as if they lose their humanity by relying on others for help.

So then we assume the worse and guesstimate that all the homeless are drug addicts and alcoholics without any underlying problems?

Okay, Fox sat around talking about how there was about a million people pissed off about paying taxes.  You know, WE THE PEOPLE did have a "TEA PARTY", I believe it was boston, where people spilled tea into the water to signify they were sick of paying taxes.  Now people got together to say the same thing about this gov't.  Fox reported it seriously.

Most other news organizations derailed it, Talking about Tea Bagging and laughing about it.  I find that FOX in this instance was more responsible and respectful of people who were exercising their constitional rights to organize and protest peacefully.

Liberals are still idiots talking about tea bagging.  Liberals who promote stupid laws regarding marriage, and then want to make innappropriate jokes about a real movement.

Don't expect Obama to win the next election.  Honestly.  And anyone who thinks that having a diverse viewpoint is bad, doesn't understand what FREE SPEECH is really about.

Liberals may laugh at the term teabaggers, but it was the tea party people who started calling themselves that. If they gave themselves a silly name, why shouldn't we laugh?

http://www.thehotjoints.com/2009/04/15/liberal-tv-pundits-refer-to-tea-party-movement-as-tea-bagging/

This was the CNN coverage on it!!  I rest my case....

liberal morons should be shot, before they reproduce and create more idiodicy!!  I say this tongue in cheek.  Similiar to Rush Limbaughs joke about "Coyote Ugly".  Where you wake up to find this girl so ugly, you rather chew off your own arm than wake her up, because its trapped by her head.....

This joke was before the movie, Coyote Ugly.  lol

A quick recap here...Fox News, who I am told has more viewers than their competitors, has critics...you write a post in which amongst other points you point out the appeal of holding diverse viewpoints...but prior to that you go to great legnths to label those who hold opinions diverse from you and Fox as "idiots"
Does that about sum it up?
BTW you will fit right in here.

Hi, im tazzy.  ignoring my question will not assure you that i will go away.  i asked you a question, you have yet to answer it.  Where was Fox's coverage on a national march on washington by a group of people peacefully exrecising their rights to organize and march.... especially when the march was right outside their window?  Oh yeah, it was on that two minute news blurb where Fox ran a feed off ABC video.

Fox gave them no more thought than that... and you have tha audacity to say...

"I find that FOX in this instance was more responsible and respectful of people who were exercising their constitional rights to organize and protest peacefully."

Oh yeah, you did say in this instance... in this ONE instance... and that makes Fox the perfect news source... because in this ONE instance.. when you AGREED with Fox... they televised this movement more than anyone else!

I don't see how. Here's your original observation -

One of the problems with your "test" is your desire to see Fox's motto of "Fair and Balanced" as a test of an absolute standard of fairness, rather than what it actually is: a reaction to the "unfairness" of the majority of the current "major media".

You say yourself that when Fox says they're "fair and balanced," it's not intended as a literal assertion that they are fair and balanced. What am I misreading?
