When we are stung by words, it's a good idea to consider why.

Who/what is being hurt ? It's only because we, ourselves, identify with labels. It is the identification with something that is being attacked that is the problem. Granted , it's not easy to step back and consider. The reaction is to defend or strike back.

What is one, really ? I think not something that can really be hurt by words.

Sometimes, people throw shit out there, and it falls back on everyone. That's objectionable.

I understood the reactions in the other thread, even though I found the one comment very funny.

I suspect some of the responses are  perhaps a bit disingenuous? . It seems that almost everyone who responded here would never consider laughing at an  "offensive" joke.

I saw outrage, which is fair I suppose.... but  not much else.

As one half of the dastardly duo...the other half is sitting two feet away on the other couch...a couple of points.
We have been called buffoons, wankers, pricks, cretins and asses all because of three jokes.
If you go to the thread and read those three jokes you'll see that they had nothing to do with concentration camps or genocide in any way.
They were not anti semetic. They focused on the fact that she hid in an attic for two years, not on her religion. The fact that she was Jewish and was part of the Holocaust had nothing to do with the jokes. There are jokes against every race and religion and they are not viewed as crossing the line.
So what is the line? And who decides what it is?

I laugh at you all the time...lol

Though to be more serious...I actually laugh at things that most of the people that have responded here would find offensive or objectionable. I think what you're trying to get at is why we find certain things funny. I don't know why I do and couldn't even begin to try to explain why I find most anything funny. I just do.

I admit that I approve...

Oh wait. Wrong thread.

On the OP though... There are lines. Most people have lines that are in the same general area but people's aren't exactly the same. There are areas where they are radically different. The key, to me, is try to be respectful and be aware of one's one "hot buttons" where they have trouble looking at matters objectively and simply to avoid them.

Oh poor Aqua, once you find these "hot buttons" is where the fun really begins.

Buy yourself one of those infomercial "Ove Glove" oven mits and away you go.   They can withstand the most heated of meltdowns.

So what is the line? And who decides what it is?

I personally found it offensive because it made light of the suffering that Anne Frank went through trying to avoid becoming a victim of the holocaust. It's kind of a weak defence to say it doesn't relate to the holocaust, it does. Furthermore what kind of mind would think up such a thing, who would give the issue such serious thought to find a way to make light of it? Why would anyone go to such lengths?

The other week another poster showed a photo of a moat type structure around one of the camps referring to the Olympic swimming pool people got to exercise in whilst staying there. Would this post be considered inoffensive because it's actually referring to camp geography and not the holocaust itself?

I made a judgment I accept people are able to draw other conclusions if they like, they will not be right in my mind.

It may be obvious that this was brought on by another thread. Is there really such a thing as too far when it comes to humor?

Monty Python comes to mind, "twit of the year race". Isn't that making fun of mentally handicapped? Am I the only one who laughed  when I saw it the first time?

Is there a line to be crossed? If so who decides?

Jeff

Replying without having seen anyone else's post, because I don't care about other's thoughts.

*see? a funnay*

I laugh at whatever makes me laugh, no matter how gross, stupid, filthy, politically incorrect, asinine, fucked up, etc.

However, I try to avoid hurting other's feelings, if possible, and it ain't, always possible.

And even if I'm laughing at you, doesn't mean I don't like you. All it means is that I like to laugh.

I am not saying I don't understand when people get offended... I think we all rationalize what we find funny.

All those Michael Jackson jokes didn't get spread because no one laughed. Nor the Catholic priest jokes. Yet there is nothing really funny about diddling an alter boy, is there.

Jeff

Makes you wonder why MJ never joined the church, huh?

Would it be wrong of me to take myself in that pool? Is that technically allowed?

Now that is just plain mean.  That is hurtful.   We were supposed to be lovers.  You were supposed to feed me.

I didn't know Christa McAuliffe...

Q: Did you know that Christa McAuliffe was blue eyed?
A: One blew left and one blew right.

Poor thing.

Once something is removed by time it becomes fair game.  We don't sit and dwell on our losses.

Remember 9-11 and we will never forget?   How many flags did you even see marking the date?   We forgot.

that is the way it is supposed to work.  Sometimes it is easier to laugh about some fairly hoffific shit.  it doesn't minimize the event.  It just simply acknowledges  that you are human and that life does go on.

No one should forget the tragedy of the holocaust....(like those damn Jewish documentary makers will ever put that baby to bed....And the Oscar goes to "Skipping through Auschwitz"...)...But to simply state that one thing is off limits but another is acceptible seems rather odd.

how many Cambodians does it take to make a holocaust?
