It's certainly not a *must* for lots of people ..... I'm smooth as smooth and so is he........I'm glad he prefers me hairless because I do too......... and I'm glad he shaves, even though he was the first chap I'd ever stumbled across that was.

Depends on your situation. I was one of those "thigh to thigh" types with fast growing hair. I had some laser which helped, but nothing, and no technique ever worked for the mound. I always got ugly big bumps. The best I can do is trim verrrrry close with a beard trimmer. Which still feels prickly.
