TheHeretic -> Why are liberals so condescending? (2/6/2010 8:49:52 AM)

A nice, gentle, bit of analysis about behaviors we get see around here on a regular basis.  Probably too gentle.

Every political community includes some members who insist that their side has all the answers and that their adversaries are idiots. But American liberals, to a degree far surpassing conservatives, appear committed to the proposition that their views are correct, self-evident, and based on fact and reason, while conservative positions are not just wrong but illegitimate, ideological and unworthy of serious consideration. Indeed, all the appeals to bipartisanship notwithstanding, President Obama and other leading liberal voices have joined in a chorus of intellectual condescension.

Why are liberals so condescending?

tazzygirl -> RE: Why are liberals so condescending? (2/6/2010 8:52:05 AM)

Because conservatives are so stupid [:D]

Conservatives make you WET!    :)

DarkSteven -> RE: Why are liberals so condescending? (2/6/2010 9:09:41 AM)

That's odd.  I find some liberals to be as described, and some conservatives (Rush, Palin) to also assume that they are right and everyone else is simply misled.

kittinSol -> RE: Why are liberals so condescending? (2/6/2010 9:14:21 AM)

Liberals seem condescending to conservatives because conservatives have an inferiority complex of astronomical proportions [8D] .

Liberals seem condescending to conservatives because they're not persuaded by conservative wedge issues, which pisses off the conservatives no end [8D] .

Liberals seem condescending to conservatives because in their hearts, the conservatives know full well that the liberal political philosophy is far closer to the preachings of Jesus than the Lee Atwater school of thought is, yet the conservatives have claimed Jesus as one of their own [8D] .

Liberals seem condescending to conservatives because they tend to have higher cultural standards, and don't listen to right-wing wackos on talk radio. That pisses off the conservatives who in turn call the libs 'elitist' [8D] .

Liberals seem condescending to conservatives because they're taller, healthier, more intelligent and more beautiful, have bigger cocks, tinglier clits, and are better in bed.

Whoever said generalisations were bad [sm=biggrin.gif] ?

Well, he is a republican, but..yeah...I'll cop to that, grins

thornhappy -> RE: Why are liberals so condescending? (2/6/2010 9:21:52 AM)

Over the Bush 43 administration, I noticed a real disdain for education.  People who led from the gut were seen as awesome, while people who looked at side effects, did analysis, etc. were seen as policy wonk pointy-head elitists.  During the last campaign it was even worse as seen in Palin's campaign style.  Then there's the religious camp within the Republican party that regards anyone not meeting their definition of Christian with condescension.

I noticed that the article avoided discussion about the feedings of paranoia by organizations like Fox News (yes, I've watched it.  It plays all day long at work, and I've been there for over 2 years).  People like Cheney really do have a Manichean world view, and so did Bush.  Why is pointing out myths, misstatements, and wrong facts condescension?

Hell, I work at a very conservative company, and I hear conservative condescension all the time.  The article took little notice of that, and it does exist.  I've seen it in the writings of conservative op-ed columnists.  Shit, I've seen it here on the boards.

How fucked up is that? They do the same thing where my husband works - he was told by the guy who installed the television sets that orders came from above that they should broadcast Fox and nothing else. And of course, the employees put up and shut up.

Oh crap!.  I just realized I misposted here.  Not quite walking into the ladies room at a fine restaraunt, but this thread is in the wrong place.

HisSweetElysium -> RE: Why are liberals so condescending? (2/6/2010 9:31:01 AM)

Bush speeches were rated at a 3rd grade reading level in the last elections 2000/2004
Al Gore and John Kerry rated at 8th grade and above.

Hence the idea that conservatives are a lil' slow on the uptake.

And have you SEEN Ann Coulter?  Want to talk about self righteous condescension?????

kdsub -> RE: Why are liberals so condescending? (2/6/2010 9:34:41 AM)

Funny…when the shoe was on the other foot and the Republicans were the majority I didn’t here you complain about how condescending they were…How much compromising did Bush and the Republican Congress do.

You of all people…lol…I though you more savvy about politics.

Every nut job with a blog or fanatical rightwing website is running the article front page…just like it is something that has never happened before…poor Republicans.

Not to worry the time will come when your side is on top and you can sneer at the Democratic minority again….Just like you did last time…soooo condescending.

I'm lucky as an independent I get to sneer and both sides and I am very condescending... especially to whiners.

As a conservative I take offense to all the conservative bashing, but as a human I TRULY take offense to the original question, so...bash away oh liberal ones!![:D]

PeonForHer -> RE: Why are liberals so condescending? (2/6/2010 9:41:09 AM)

If that's true, then it's probably got a lot to do with a belief in reason over 'instinct'.  Liberals (and socialists) favour rationalism.  Michael Oakeshott, the British conservative political philosopher, said:

"The general character and disposition of the Rationalist are, I think., difficult to identify. At bottom he stands (he always stands) for independence of mind on all occasions, for thought free from obligation to any authority save the authority of reason'. His circumstances in the modern world have made him contentious: he is the enemy of authority, of prejudice, of the merely traditional, customary or habitual. His mental attitude is at once sceptical and optimistic: sceptical, because there is no opinion, no habit, no belief, nothing so firmly rooted or so widely held that he hesitates to question it and to judge it by what he calls his 'reason' . . . .

For a liberal or a socialist, the appeal to reason is self-evident.  S/he can't understand that conservatives don't value reason in the same way.  As Oakeshott implies, conservatives place a higher value on authority, prejudice (a word that he, and other conservative philosphers, use in an approving way); the traditional, customary or habitual.

To put it simply: in an important sense of the word, it's fair to say that conservatives don't actually 'think' as much as liberals. Hence John Stuart Mill, a founding father of liberalism and arch rationalist, nicknamed the conservatives the Stupid Party:

Mill said,

I never meant to say that the Conservatives are generally stupid. I meant to say that stupid people are generally Conservative. I believe that is so obviously and universally admitted a principle that I hardly think any gentleman will deny it.

Lucienne -> RE: Why are liberals so condescending? (2/6/2010 9:46:04 AM)

I find a lot to disagree with in the linked article. To begin with, the idea that "liberals" have a significant voice in the national conversation such that we set the terms of debate. Health care reform negotiations started with single-payer off the table. Liberals are not in charge here. If liberals were in charge, Rahm Emanuel would be forcefully retired to Alaska and kept busy ice fishing. The genuinely liberal voices mentioned in that article are far from the corridors of power. What... you've got writers, professors, and a damn comedian. And the former head of the DNC who is generally held in disdain by the Washington establishment despite having been very successful at the job. If you're catching a snide tone from actual liberals it's because no one ever fucking listens to us even when history proves us fucking right. It's not condescension. We don't have the power to condescend. It's frustration, impatience and impotence. Because conservatives are fucking morons and they're basically in charge. So, yeah, boo fucking hoo sorry your insecure little mind was offended while your horrible ideas ruin the fucking country. (ETA: The Daily Show and Colbert Report are gallows humor.)

I mean seriously:

quote:

Perhaps the most important conservative insight being depreciated is the durable warning from free-marketeers that government programs often fail to yield what their architects intend. Democrats have been busy expanding, enacting or proposing major state interventions in financial markets, energy and health care. Supporters of such efforts want to ensure that key decisions will be made in the public interest and be informed, for example, by sound science, the best new medical research or prudent standards of private-sector competition. But public-choice economists have long warned that when decisions are made in large, centralized government programs, political priorities almost always trump other goals.

How many textbook examples of market failure do you  jackasses have to see before you're willing to acknowledge that maybe, just maybe, sometimes a government program that doesn't work exactly as intended is better for the community than a free market that doesn't work exactly as intended?

Both sides can be equally frustrating to me. I usually am around more conservative people due to location, and therefore seem to butt head with "why don't we just bomb the shit out of them" type of thought more than liberal stuff. That is until I log onto the CM message board! [:)]

The way I perceive this is thus; it's got nothing to do with left - right, liberal or conservative, political party or anything like that.

There are two basic kinds of people. There are those who are self owners, and are responsible for themselves. They have no interest in controlling the lives or property of others.

Then there are all the rest who, to various degrees, DO think they should control others and their property. They have various motives, the worst being "for your own good" or "for the children" - especially when they really, truly mean that.

Far as I'm concerned, that's it in a nutshell. The brain damaged controllers sneer because they don't own their own lives,  don't understand why they should... and can't accept that anyone else would even want to do so.
