A simple question out of curious. How much do you tip a waitress and why do you tip her that amount? Also what would make you tip her more?

Minimum, 20%—but with one relevant caveat: if the server is being tremendously flippant or neglectful, I will leave a smiley face in pennies.

P.s If I plan on eating at that establishment again, I'll forgo the penny punishment and just overlook the ordeal, but the tip will certainly be lower than 20%.

P.p.s Overall, good treatment by the waitstaff enhances an experience at a restaurant, but I don't make a fetish of focusing so much on it that it ruins the experience. Good food, good wine, a good view and good conversation trumps a waitress having a bad day. Try to have fun. Part of the key to happiness in life is not in needing things to be perfect, but being able to live with imperfections. Well, to a certain point, that is.

Come and eat where I work, I like this outlook, it is real and makes sense. Being waaaayyyyyy tooooooo experienced at this job I can usually hide any signs of having a bad day and we kid amongst ourselves how good we are at being fake. I have called it giving psychic blowjobs.

Honestly I pride myself in the service I give although I really should be making money some other way by now. I am not really fake at all, I do care and I know what I am doing. I am intuitive so can guess quite a bit, or ascertain what the guest is wanting, needing and all of that. I like to have fun and kid around a lot if it is a group that is into that. I do not prefer serving unsmiling snobs who think I am beneath them even though, I suppose I am.

Most of the time though folks like me service and when I have been in tip pooling, 9 out of 10 times I am pulling in the most cash if not also the most sales but even sometimes with lower sales I am bringing home the most bacon and then I am the one who splits off my cash to the other servers because that is how tip pooling works.

I am not a tip counter. I barely look at the time. If someone punishes me with the tip and I feel I deserved it, it happens, oh well, better luck next time. Some people power trip with the server and that can be hard to navigate without showing what a loser they are on my fairly transparent face. I do like to turn a disgruntled guest around, it is like surgery and the pay off is usually worth it. I like the challenge. Grumpy client, smooth, schmooze and lather, slather and bake, it turns out right in the end it is lots of good work and fun really. If someone is simply cheap well, that speaks about them doesnt it.I can tell if it is a bad tip but if it is in the ballpark I am not really paying attention until the end of the night when it all gets added up after I have done my read.

I triple loathe the shmucks who rave about my service, then tip below what the ranting ought to reflect. I dont like it if a man try to pick me up and leaves a crap tip. Nope. Gerrr away. I also dont like being on a date and the guy doenst tip right, so embarrassing too.

I love serving elegant diners, upscale casual folks who dig wine and food and good service without being all up the ass about it. My faves, the ones who are open to trying something I suggest like maybe some Averna and the end of the meal or other tasty treats.

Although I don't think service people automatically deserve something . My mother was a waitress for 20 years. I can't help but think back to how rough it was for her to provide for us so I give 20 and sometimes 30% depending on the person..I have walked out without giving anything 1 time but the lady was really bad..and to top it off she had a lousy attitude.

I try to remember how my mom might have felt if she didn't make enough money to support us and then realize how many possible single moms might be waiting on people in restaurants like the ones she worked in...and then tip.

Actually they do in countries where tipping is part of their wage. It is a super tough stupid job in many ways with your average joe acting out his power tripping on the service staff at times. It is wrong. Maybe the lady had a lousy attitude becuase you threw your weight all over her and then punished her? People are people sometimes the chemistry is toxic the wait staff carries the blame but after years she knows that type and doesnt waste her time trying to bother or take it personal.

I live the the US...so what I am saying specifically pertains to the way we do things here. Other countries, other customs.
We were taught as children to tip 15% for basic service, 20% for great service. This has pretty much now become a standard 20% here in the US.

What REALLY upsets waitrons (and I know, because I was one) is when people come from other countries to tourist area and pretend to not know that tipping is expected. (I've actually heard a Canadian tour guide tell people in her group to NOT tip...can you believe it!!??) Did you know that if servers don't get tips, we only make about $3.75 an hour?Yes, you saw that right. Here in Tombstone, servers wages are only $3.25 to about $5.00 an hour.

So when the nice couple from Canada that we just busted our ass for leaves us a 25 cent tip, it is a bit upsetting. I try to educate travelers as much as possible, after all, in their country, servers make a decent basic wage. Not so here, where we are at the mercy of people's whims.

Also, Heartcream is right, servers often have to "tip out" the busboys, dishwashers, cooks, etc., which severely reduces our take home!

If a service was crappy, look at the circumstances. Often, the restaurant will be short-staffed, which isn't your server's fault. If your server is chitchatting to the cute busboy and ignoring your repeated attempts to get their attention, then you should tip accordingly.

I have only NOT left a tip 3 times in my life. If I leave less than a 15% tip, I speak to the manager and tell them why, so they can be aware that the server is injuring their business.

First, regardless of gender, male or female, it depends on how good the service/ care was, and then how much I can afford to spare. If the service and care sucked, they don't get squatt from me. If the service and care and everything else was exempliary, and I could spare an extravigant tip then I have given as much as 20 dollars.

Dont go out if you cant pay the bill. Cutting corners on the little guy is beyond tacky. Depending on how much your bill is 20 bucks aint a thing. I am not dissing it but depending on how much your bill is determines whether you are being overly generous. Many times 20 bucks would not even be 10 % if a big family or a group comes in.

How about the folks who want all separate checks and then deck out of tipping because they think the next guy will do it, sneaky arses.

Yeah there is that and often times it is used as an excuse, you know bottom line cheap folks taking advantage of the little guy. If it is an honest oversight I understand and move on but when I know they are milking the thing I spit in their food.

NOT! I would not ever do anything like that but I have seen cooks do rudeness to food that totally grossed me out. The places I stay at though wouldnt do things like that though. I have stories for sure maing.

Yeah that was probably it or maybe your projecting since you don't know a thing about the incident.

Yeah that last one is it. Here's a penny for your poor service.

If service is good,I always tip some, at least the recomended amount, but if I tip more than that, depends on what I can easily spare, and also on how exceptional the service and care was like I said.  I don't eat at super super expensive places, so I feel that 20 dollar tip for a 9 dollar meal, or 10 dollar meal, is more than fair, I could be wrong though.

As for the people who ask for seperate checks then don't tip cause they think someone else will, it sucks, but it's not my problem, Nor do I need to somehow compinsate in my tip to make up for the jerks who skipped out on tip.

Average 20 - 30% in the States and about 10 - 15% here in Europe. We never ding the wait staff on the tip because of food so it's strictly based on their service and attitude.

So are you saying that elderly or disabled people on a fixed income don't deserve to go out once in a while and not have to eat their own cooking? Or what about that single mother that is struggling to make ends meet? Doesn't she deserve to get out once in a while as well? Isn't telling them to "Don't go out if you can't pay the bill," simply brecause the server doesn't get as big of a tip as they would like is also "cutting corners" on the little people? Seems to me that attitude is also tacky.

And as a question to the group, what are your tipping habits when you go to a smorgasboard where the patron "serves" themselves and the servor pretty much only brings your drink and the check?

2003,  that is a good point. People who eat - are not necessarily full of cash.   Some would say dont go out then-- yet then the complain would be no one eats out.

Nope I dont think this is enough, you still need to tip better than that, they are running your drinks, clearing your varied and sundry plates, overseeing the table, cleaning the table re-setting it. 1-2 per person is not good. It is 2010.

Allow me to educate you.

Servers did not get a pay raise for many, many years in the states. (not sure where you are in the world). Currently, most make less than half minimum. But, they are required to declare for IRS at least minimum. The state minimum where i live is $7.25. I make $2.83 an hour. Therefore, the IRS demands that i either make up the difference on my tables, or, in some states, the owner of the establishment has to make up the difference.

As far as tip outs to other employees (bussers, runners, bartenders, hostesses, ect) i average 20-25% of my tips goes to them. sushi can vary depending on if i have the sushi bar that night or not. If i have those seats, i tip out 2% based upon the total amount of sushi sales. The rest of the tip outs are based upon the amount of tips i make, not my sales.

As a server, i have limited control over your dining experience. I am always polite and attentive. I spend 90% of my time on the floor, not behind the scene. Last night, for example, my section included 2 four seat tables and 8 two seat tables... and they were full almost all night. One demanding customer and toss a monkey wrench into the whole night for everyone.

I have no control over the temperature of your food. I do not cook it. I do not take it to the table. I will make every attempt to be there when you do receive your food, make sure you have all you need, and im fanatical about checking back after a couple of bites.

I work in an upper class pan asian restaurant. Casual elegance is the term my boss loves to use. Table cloths and napkins, fully stocked bar and a beverage manager who is the bomb when it comes to wines. A pastry chef that is phenominal. Our cooks are from thialand, singapore, malaysia, ect.

With all this going for us... we are only human. We do our best to ensure our customers have a memorable meal. And we do have alot of repeat customers with waiting lists on the weekends sometimes an hour long.

But, if you see a waitress running her ass off attempting to take care of a dozen, take a deep breath and enjoy the ambience. Would you rather your meal fast, or correct? If you push a server.. any server, there will eventually be mistakes. Our hostess and managers water our customers, which is a god send on a busy saturday night. And we know you, the customers, are hungry.

But, out of curiosity, how many of you who have responded have actually worked in a restaurant? And i dont mean BK or McD's.

Now, back to your issue of older people on fixed income. As busy as we get, someone younger can sit in those seats and afford to tip us more. having said that, i adore my seniors. most come in for lunch, which is cheaper. some come in for dinner early and share a meal. many will make a night out with two or three couples. Usually, when we have these curtomers, it comehow always manages to equal out at the end of the night. I have customers who tip me 40%, i have some who can afford only 10%.

As far as this goes... part of the dining experience is being catered too, waited upon. If they didnt want that experience, they would go to a buffett. Are you saying my time isnt valuable? That my efforts should not be the basis for my income?

You should feel free to pay as much as you like but what you think has no bearing on what we do because you are clueless about the service we get when we buffet. At the places we frequent, we pay up front at the cash register so no one brings us a check. We get our own silverware and drinks and the *only* thing the wait staff will have to do is bus the table and wipe it down which may take 2 minutes tops. $1 - $2 per person is equal to $30 - $60 bucks an hour. That is sufficient.

i never know what to do in a case like this. The table is set before we sit down and the only thing the server does is clear the plates as they are used. Drinks are self-served.

As to the OP..20-30% and rarely less. If the server is crabby i just smile and ask if they are having a bad day. More often than not, you see them melt a little.
