Nothing demonstrates character, for better or worse, than tipping.

I won't tip when someone tells me what i SHOULD be tipping.

Oh, that reminds me. The automatic gratuity for a party of ___ or more. If they have that policy then that's what they get. If it's less than what I might have tipped left to my own devices they still get the automatic gratuity. I have never been a fan of that policy even though it probably saves me a few bucks when I encounter it.

My place its 18% for parties larger than 6. I always, inevitably, forget to add that part. Sometimes it works out to my benefit, most times we end up getting screwed by a party of say 10 who tip out only that percentage.

If you had, you might have noticed that:
a) her post was to Igor, not you
b) what she said supported what you were saying

Bottom line (for me only); If I can't afford to tip decently, I either eat at home or pick up some takeout. I won't take up table space and a server's time if I can't leave at least 20% for the tip.

I'm a 20% + tipper. The service has to be pretty poor for me to tip less. And I never penalize them for anything that's out of their control.

A simple question out of curious. How much do you tip a waitress and why do you tip her that amount? Also what would make you tip her more?

I don't eat out much, but when I do I always give the waitress a tip I think she deserves. If she is quick to come up and retrieves my meal warm, I will tip her more. If she is slow and bring my food cold, she's ain't getting nothing. So if you serve me- I want my meals hot damn it :D I guess that applies to my subs too lol :P

I would give bigger tips of the waitress if she would wear a top hat or cat ears ^^ Those make girls look cute and it's it's not allowed to wear but she wears is anyway, I would tip here even more lol :P

(I didn't write the specific number of money, because the currency and economy is different in Lithuania, and it would look like I'm giving shit to them even if they try hard XD)

Although I don't think service people automatically deserve something . My mother was a waitress for 20 years. I can't help but think back to how rough it was for her to provide for us so I give 20 and sometimes 30% depending on the person..I have walked out without giving anything 1 time but the lady was really bad..and to top it off she had a lousy attitude.

I try to remember how my mom might have felt if she didn't make enough money to support us and then realize how many possible single moms might be waiting on people in restaurants like the ones she worked in...and then tip.

I love you even more now ;) I always tip at least 20%, and usually 30. Cheap tippers suck.

So you punish the server for the restaurant's policy, nice.
That said, I don't blame restaurants that have such a policy. Large parties are much more work, and often stay longer than 2-4 people. Since the taxes on tips (and sometimes tip outs) are usually based on sales, not the amount tipped, a large party that tips crap is basically making the server pay for serving them. If it happens enough, the management's response is usually a minimum tip on large parties.

I worked as a waitress for a whole 3 months before I quit because no matter how hard I worked, I never seemed to make more than $5 an hour. I was enticed to take a job with one of those chains because I wanted the bartneder's job. After I was hired, I discovered that job was promised to almost everyone who applied. I had no previous experience as a waitress and was only given 2 partial days worth of training before getting saddled with the largest booth in the place. I'm sure my service was far from perfect, but I never should have been given that many people so soon. When they left, I discovered that at least one person managed to leave without even paying for their meal because I not only didn't come out with a tip, but was short on the amount for the meals. It was up to me to get everyone's drinks within 5 minutes after they were seated. We had to buy our own pads for taking orders which I needed badly, not having any previous experience. Before the first week was out, I was expected to know how to enter all the orders into a computer screen QUICKLY while the girls that already knew what they were doing huffed and puffed impatiently behind me. The way you entered the order changed depending on the time of day. Once the meal was over, it was up to me to collect the money and process it through the computer system. I cleaned the table and prepared it for the next customers. We had to run into the back and help with the dishes because the manager refused to hire a full time dishwasher. Before we could leave at the end of our shift we had to roll silverware, refill containers, etc. About once a week we all had to clean the place from top to bottom and were all given our own jobs to complete before we left that day. My manager may have been one of those not giving me all my tips because even on good days I was coming up short. I also had to leave a tip for the person that did the seating and the bartender, even if she didn't make any drinks for any of my customers.
After my stint in that boot camp, I always tip 20% unless the service really stinks. If I see the waitress flirting with another employee while I'm trying to get her attention, she may only get 10-15%. I NEVER leave without tipping something.
Scarlet
Edited to add that I also tend to clean the table before the waitress arives.

For those who are curious about hunk's microwave comment, please be assured that there are plenty of restaurants in Pennsylvania where the food is prepared by hand and utterly delicious!

Please be a decent tipper and always say "thank you" for everything that is done for you by the wait staff, it is the polite way to live.
