in their country, servers make a decent basic wage. Not so here, where we are at the mercy of people's whims.

I hear what you are saying, though still depends on the country they are from. Because if you would hear what a waiter might earn over here it might sound much, however, compare it with the expensive living costs over here, then it isn't that much more (I am talking about the waiter with average tips). Because before the Euro slumped as down as it is now people back home thought I earn a heck of a lot...well, compared to home I certainly do, however compared to the cost of living over here I earn much less then I did back home where life itself is much cheaper. also when I dated guys from CM abroad they were stunned when I told them my regular cost of living for my small accomodation here...so just to see what they take away without the costs they have to cover in their country is a bit too one sided...(not a critique, only a further point which needs to be taken into consideration).

First, regardless of gender, male or female, it depends on how good the service/ care was, and then how much I can afford to spare. If the service and care sucked, they don't get squatt from me. If the service and care and everything else was exempliary, and I could spare an extravigant tip then I have given as much as 20 dollars.

Dont go out if you cant pay the bill. Cutting corners on the little guy is beyond tacky. Depending on how much your bill is 20 bucks aint a thing. I am not dissing it but depending on how much your bill is determines whether you are being overly generous. Many times 20 bucks would not even be 10 % if a big family or a group comes in.

How about the folks who want all separate checks and then deck out of tipping because they think the next guy will do it, sneaky arses.

So are you saying that elderly or disabled people on a fixed income don't deserve to go out once in a while and not have to eat their own cooking? Or what about that single mother that is struggling to make ends meet? Doesn't she deserve to get out once in a while as well? Isn't telling them to "Don't go out if you can't pay the bill," simply brecause the server doesn't get as big of a tip as they would like is also "cutting corners" on the little people? Seems to me that attitude is also tacky.

And as a question to the group, what are your tipping habits when you go to a smorgasboard where the patron "serves" themselves and the servor pretty much only brings your drink and the check?

Apart from that I guess the owner of the restaurant still prefers 50 customers coming in who don't pay a tip as if those 50 customers would not come in at all

In regards to disabled people, I have this issue sometimes at work when I go out with service users for lunch (not because I want to but because they want to), now, as rightly said in their budget isn't the tip, nor is it my job to pay the tip for them...therefore quite frankly, usually their won't be any tip (one difference I made when we went for dinner in Greece...there was one particular restaurant where I seriously felt my client being treated like a king, with nice starter and finishing with nice dessert (was not ordered, was included), there I paid a tip for him as that felt great...however, if I would regular pay their tip for them there would be no point to go to work anymore, quite frankly and managers don't agree to pay more then what the bill says, as they have to justify it with social services (who in return only pay for what is considered as necessary...and quite frankly, tips, don't fit their criteria of being necessary).

20% usually, 25%-30% for exceptional service (esp if the place is busy). I've only not left a tip once, at Dennys. The waitress spent nearly the entire time we were there chatting with the guys in the back (we could hear her), even though all the customers' glasses were empty in her section and several people were waiting to order or waiting on their checks.

One thing I do, especially at places I frequent, is to buss the table when we are done. The look on a server's face when they arrive with the check to find everything neatly stacked on the edge of the table is usually priceless. It only takes a minute, and seems to brighten their day. Many remember, and try to get us seated in their section if they spot us coming in :)

I won't tip when someone tells me what i SHOULD be tipping. Tips are based on service and is NOT a requirement of diners. So i agree, telling someone they shouldn't go out if they can't afford to tip to me is just as tacky as servers who expect to be tipped a certain amount simply for being a server. The PRICE for a meal and what the restuarant provides is the cost of the meal. The tips are separate and distinct. IF the restaurant requires tipping it will be part of their bill at the end of the meal as many places do especially for large groups.

The sad thing is is that many wait persons have forgotten that TIPPING IS NOT A REQUIREMENT of the patrons of the establishment, its a tip for service. IF your establishment felt that you should be PAID steadily for your service at a certain rate they could very easily apply such a percentage to the dinner bill, as many do for a larger group.

As for a buffet, i also pay 1-5 bucks, again, this is DEPENDING on the service. If its busy and plates are left on table, well i will tip lower, in ANY restaurant, if my glass stays empty without someone asking if i want a refill more than 5 minutes, the tip does go down. Sucks to be the server but that's one of the reasons i tip higher for good ATTENTIVE service.

Honestly, i feel for people in wait staff positions but i won't tip for service i don't receive. Period. Its the nature of a wait staff job. If you expect to be tipped a certain amount simply because you are the server -- sorry, take that up with your boss to PAY YOU MORE. The tips to me are service oriented and PEOPLE decipher what they pay for service. Unfortunately that is the beast of the business.

I am a damn good tipper, but i also tip for SERVICE, i don't tip just because someone is a wait staff person whose employer won't pay them a certain wage.

Many restaurants do not permit an option for tipping when a large party is booked. I believe the last one i attended was an automatic 20%.
Those servers work their butts off when a large party is involved and the tip is more than earned.

I start out always with a solid 20% then work from there. It will go up with excellent service or down with really neglectful service. If the experience is really bad I will not tip (this is very rare), I will write on their copy why I'm not tipping and notify the manager so ____ can be corrected.

At a buffet I tip $2 because I always have those bills with me and they are convenient plus neato to receive.

In other countries I find out what the norm is and follow that, many places simply do not have tipping at all.

In the documentary which was shown here about 2 years ago they also discovered that if you pay your tip in cash then the waiter is much more likely to get it as when you pay it with your card, as then sometimes particular restaurants decided to keep that tip and not to pass it on onto the waiter...I told my ex about it as he always pays a generous tip (easy for him to do at either time, financially) since then he is far less likely to pay his tip per credit card...

So obviously, many of us here have done our "time" waiting tables, or had loved ones who did.

To the one who said "double the tax," in an area where the tax is 5%, you are tipping 10%, and apparently not basing it on anything but someone told you to.

As Tazzy said, the wage for food servers in the majority of the US is legally less than $3.00 an hour, somewhere between $2.13 and 2.83 an hour and as not changed in 20 years.

As everyone has said, "tipping out" is the norm, not the exception. While different restaurants have different policies, most often the tip out is based on SALES, not what the server made in tips. This means that if everyone has tipped the server poorly, then the actual percentage of the tip out (based on the tips) can really cut into pay.

Most restaurants do not offer medical benefits, paid time off, vacations or anything else. Most servers work an hour before and an hour after their shift doing "side work," cleaning and stocking various parts of the restaurant. There are no tips for this.

Where there are food runners (people who do not take the orders, just deliver the food), your server has no control over what those people do. Regardless of how they write the ticket that goes to the kitchen, they can only hope the expeditor in the kitchen reads it properly and sets up the tray correctly. I hated working with food runners and most expeditors because they had no idea how to set up a tray and the food was "auctioned off." You know the "who ordered the salmon?" question. I trained servers for a number of years and taught them how to properly write the order so they could refer to it and told them to never auction off the food. When I was younger, I could easily deliver drinks and food to a table of 20 without ever asking who got what. Rarely did I mix things up, even when the customers had changed seats (although then they did get a joke from me of how they were trying to confuse me by changing seats).

My best friend is from Germany and she got a decent wage and commission on her sales. This, in my opinion, is one of the best ways for a restaurant to get their servers to do a great job. All servers hear from the managers "up sell," getting customers to order more, with commission, the server has a stake in seeing that happens.

As for the old and disabled, or the single mother eating out if they can't afford to properly tip. No, they really shouldn't. As Tazzy mentioned, a server's time has value and shouldn't be disregarded because someone can't afford to eat.

The standard in the US now is 18-20%. The 15% concept has long since died. The most frequent thing that people seem to lower the tip over is when their food is not cooked properly. Servers have no control over that. I was known for telling customers I had no problem returning their steak to the kitchen if it wasn't the way they wanted it.

To the OP, you didn't list a dollar amount, but you also didn't list a percentage amount, I would say that chances are you are under tipping.

To everyone else who thinks that it is ok to tip shitty...if you frequent that establishment, know that every server there knows who you are and your service is never going to get better. You earned the reputation as a crappy tipper, and you will get the bare minimum service required. Good food servers have many other customers who tip them well to worry about trying to impress you. They don't care that you want us to kiss your ass to earn that better tip. They want you to eat your food and get the hell out so the table can be filled with people who they enjoy serving and who appreciate the server's efforts.

Now it makes me even more smile when I pass restaurants who don't have that often that many people to serve in the first place...but if your place is all the time busted full then I do understand your point

and whilst I do understand this

quote:

from your side...working in the social sector I there quite frankly have my empathy on the clients to go out IN THE SOCIETY and live as part of the society and not so much on the waiter, as after all it is their choice to work in that business, nobody forces them to do that...because if its about how much they have to walk and do...then quite frankly I think nurses and postman, binmen etc. should get tipped much more then they do (I know some get their cash when patients leave, however, I doubt that it is as much as the poor waiter earns.) Therefore, sorry but my emphasis is there with the disabled clients and the elderly and not with the waiter...as thankfully the days of hiding and locking up disabled and elderly people are pretty much over...as it was being said...we are in 2010

I live the the US...so what I am saying specifically pertains to the way we do things here. Other countries, other customs.
We were taught as children to tip 15% for basic service, 20% for great service. This has pretty much now become a standard 20% here in the US.

Yea, that is pretty much the way I figure it. They would have to really suck for me not to leave a tip and that hasn't happened in years.

When I was a waitress in Orlando (for a whopping 5 days before I begged them to put me back on cleaning rooms, yes I hated it that much) the manager told me to automatically add 15% to the bill if the group was from the UK. I thought it was really odd, but he said they are not used to tipping there.

20% for starters, even if the service is bad because as a former server, I know that most of what constitutes "bad service" isn't the server's fault directly. Master usually leaves 20-25%, and believe me, when I noticed that at the beginning of our relationship, he earned major points. The way we treat people who serve us says a lot about us.

If you can't afford to tip, you shouldn't be eating out. Sorry, but if you know you're going to a place where tipping is customary, you bear responsiblity for tipping. When I'm broke and can't afford to tip, I eat at home. My being broke shouldn't affect the server's pay.

Although I don't think service people automatically deserve something . My mother was a waitress for 20 years. I can't help but think back to how rough it was for her to provide for us so I give 20 and sometimes 30% depending on the person..I have walked out without giving anything 1 time but the lady was really bad..and to top it off she had a lousy attitude.

I try to remember how my mom might have felt if she didn't make enough money to support us and then realize how many possible single moms might be waiting on people in restaurants like the ones she worked in...and then tip.

Actually they do in countries where tipping is part of their wage. It is a super tough stupid job in many ways with your average joe acting out his power tripping on the service staff at times. It is wrong. Maybe the lady had a lousy attitude becuase you threw your weight all over her and then punished her? People are people sometimes the chemistry is toxic the wait staff carries the blame but after years she knows that type and doesnt waste her time trying to bother or take it personal.

Oh, and around Christmastime and New years I always leave 20-25% plus I'll give them an extra $10-$15 too on the side.
I tend to go to the same restaurants so I kind of know the waitresses at least by site and they're always glad to come to my table.
On a good note one of my former neighbors is now waitressing at a very popular bar/restaurant in Murrill's Inlet and her husband told me that on the weekend nights she's making $350-$400 a night! I asked him if she was "stripping."
VERY nice looking woman! It's a real busy place and on the go from 4 till 2 or so.
They say that many of the strippers around here can make from $3-$5, 000 per week. I wouldn't know anything about that though.

Oh, that reminds me. The automatic gratuity for a party of ___ or more. If they have that policy then that's what they get. If it's less than what I might have tipped left to my own devices they still get the automatic gratuity. I have never been a fan of that policy even though it probably saves me a few bucks when I encounter it.

I don't, however Daddy does. I try to be understanding if the place is packed, and they don't have enough people on the floor to take care of the waiting customers, and for that I won't ding them their tip. However, there are wait persons who're un friendly, un helpful, who do not wait on your table very much and no  the place isn't busy, Who don't make it a very good experience to be there, based on things that ARE in their control. And for that I will most certainly leave a less than stellar tip.

But, if you see a waitress running her ass off attempting to take care of a dozen, take a deep breath and enjoy the ambience. Would you rather your meal fast, or correct? If you push a server.. any server, there will eventually be mistakes. Our hostess and managers water our customers, which is a god send on a busy saturday night. And we know you, the customers, are hungry.

But, out of curiosity, how many of you who have responded have actually worked in a restaurant? And i dont mean BK or McD's.

On average, I tip two or three dollars; between five and ten for excellent service.

If she is shirtless, it can be higher.
