I leave at least 20%, sometimes more if the bill is really low. For instance, my daughter and I had breakfast at a diner a couple weeks ago...the bill was only like 12 bucks, there's no way I'm only gonna leave $2.40 on the table. In a case like that I'll leave 4 or 5 dollars. For dinner or lunch out I always leave at least 20% and just round up to the nearest dollar.

Those people work so hard it's not even funny. And I've never not left a tip, even if the service was poor; everyone has a bad day now and again.

I'm also one of those freaks who neatens up the table and stacks the dishes up.

It took close to a half an hour to list all the prayers for sickly people at church the other night.

FR:

I was a waitress for several years right out of high school, so I've always been a stickler for a minimum 20%.  I've never had to worry when Firm and I dine out because he is an extremely generous tipper.  Decent service gets anywhere from 20-40%, excellent service earns 60-70%.  We've been known, on rare occasions, to leave a 100% tip for outstanding service.  Service means a great deal to us when we dine out... it's an important part of the experience.

I'll remember that if you're ever my server, Tazzy.
I almost never eat dessert anyway, so I'm really just saving the server some time

I normally tip at least 20%, more so in a bar setting if they keep me a cold bud handy and keep my ice water filled when I switch to water for the last hour or so.  I have walked out without leaving a tip before, but the waitress always knew why I was doing it.  I think it has happened 2 or 3 times in my life.

I was a waitress for a good while in my younger days.  I had good tippers and bad tippers, but I always made sure to give them all the same great service.  I thought, even then, that doing my job well would always come back to me, even if not immediately.

I remember one construction crew that ate with us for an entire week.  Maybe 7 or 8 guys, barely spoke english, and getting their order was always a challenge.  The first night, no tip.  Second night, no tip.  The last few nights, no tip.  I would walk back in the kitchen and mumble obscenities under my breath, then turn the charm on and go back to work.

The last night they were there, the boss came in and had coffee, to tell me how much he enjoyed my lovely personality and the way I always smiled and treated them well, and how I did not get upset over the lack of english they had.  I told him that was what I got paid the big bucks for-lol.  In my mind I was thinking ya cheap bassturd.

He left and I told my boss, nice folks, but man they cost me money this week.  She was happy cause they had really helped ehr bottom line that week.

Anyhoo, too late to make a long story short (aint it always by the time someone says that?) but when the boss left that last night, I went co clear his coffee cup, and underneath it was a nicely folded $100 bill.  This was 1979 and I did the snoopy dance for 5 minutes I know.   I will never know why they did not tip all week, but it didn't matter then anyhow.

Waitressing is very hard work, sorely unappreciated work, underpaid work.  But, inho, if you only give good service because you expect a great tip, you should do all you can to find some other work.  No matter what  job you do, I think you should do it to the best of your ability every day, for every person you come in contact with.

If you choose to be in a customer service field, theres gonna be dickwads you deal with almost daily.  Go to the kitchen and curse, then smile and do ya job.  Ya never know when you will find $100 under a coffee cup.

This is a job i have bounced in and out of for over 20 years... one i love and one im very good at.

Any job you do only for money is a job you wont perform well after a while and one that causes very little satisfaction. My job pays my bills, primary reason for having it. Secondary is the kink side of me that gets a kick out of pleasing other people.

While your server appreciates your efforts, unless you actually know how to stack them properly, you might be making more work for the server. I can't tell you the number of times that people tried to be "helpful" and stacked the plates in such a precarious way, they couldn't be "scooped" up and taken to the bus bin. Then the server gets all the mess on their hands trying to fix the problem.

Not saying this to be mean, but if you are going to stack the plates (which you guys might already do), use some sense and stack them the way you would at home to clear the table. Big ones on the bottom and no utensils in the middle to make the pile fall.

I'm quite careful how I do it, LL. I haven't had a server yet who didn't just scoop the whole thing up without dropping so much as a spoon (or a chopstick, as is often the case).

Edited to fix crappy grammar.

Aussie waitresses don't have to rely on tips to make up for a crap hourly rate unlike the US but if I tip its usually in line with personality and professionalism.

Depending on where I am Ive tipped from $5 for a $10 meal to a few hundred dollars for an excellent food waitress I experienced at a restaurant in Crown casino who went above and beyond to make sure my experience was enjoyable.

Ive eaten in some very nice establishments in many countries and this one food service professional was the best id ever experienced.

I also threw in $100 to the tip jar for the drinks and general staff but I made it very clear that the $200 was to go directly to her pocket and not into the pool.

I also think that food service work is largely a thankless job and ive seen some of the arsehats they have to deal with so in a country where tipping is optional I make em count.

I won't tip when someone tells me what i SHOULD be tipping.

Oh, that reminds me. The automatic gratuity for a party of ___ or more. If they have that policy then that's what they get. If it's less than what I might have tipped left to my own devices they still get the automatic gratuity. I have never been a fan of that policy even though it probably saves me a few bucks when I encounter it.

You can not be a fan of it all you like, but there is a reason for it. As Wyldhrt already mentioned, big tables are more work and they linger longer, so there is no turning the table for the next customer. Management does that in places where the servers have been screwed out of a decent tip enough times that they are going to guarantee the server gets paid for busting their ass on the big table.

Most places that I have worked, from coffee shops to elegant dining will leave it up to the server if they want to add the gratuity or not to the check. And most experienced servers know from the moment you sit down whether you are likely to be a cheap bastard or a decent tipper.

I rarely added the tip to large parties, and was only screwed a couple of times over 20 years. Even when I worked in a diner and I had a table of 20 young college kids, they tipped me well. Then again, I was good enough that they wouldn't let anyone else wait on them.

PA is a big state.... tho I tend to doubt that your area has home cooked delights.

First of all, ALL restaurant kitchens have microwaves. It doesn't mean they are serving frozen crap, it means they have a microwave. This includes the most upscale restaurant you are going to go to.

Let's be real pahunkboy, it isn't the microwave that makes people sick or fat. The food in restaurants are cooked to be enjoyed. In other words, they use real butter, yummy cream sauces and all the other delicious stuff that should be eaten in moderation.

If you don't like the food in the restaurants, stay home and cook for yourself. If you can't afford to tip your server at least 18%, stay home and cook for yourself. If you are a cranky son of a bitch who is never happy, stay the hell home.

I used to have some regular customers who always commented about how happy and cheerful I was. I honestly explained to them the fact that my tips partially depended on my being that way. Since it was my job and I had to be there anyway, what was the point of spreading misery to others because I was in a bad mood?

I would suggest most people rent the movie "Waiting" with Ryan Reynolds and that MAC computer guy (forgot his name). As cheesy as the movie was, almost anyone who has been in the food service industry will laugh their asses off because so much of how the servers act is true.
