how about saying "i'm a realist". atheist is such a negative term and not accurate

While that's a wonderful twist, unfortunately, it's not an accurate one.  You would have to prove that there is no God to claim it.  Something that you don't have the ability to do.

As for negativity, are you quite sure that you, specifically as a person, want to engage in that debate?

just as nobody here has no proof that one exists.

That doesn't matter. Surely you can grasp that for something to be "reality" it has be proven. One way or another. Since it hasn't, neither view can be termed "realist".

I find it hard to believe people only say this to others on Sundays....hmmmm...I am not religious but I wouldn't take it as a bad thing at all.

Kinda wondering that myself. I hear "God bless" all the time. It's like being wished a "Merry Christmas" while I'm doing my Hannukah shopping. It does get a little annoying and frustrating but whatever. They are just wishing me a happy time, I don't need to insult them or get pissy with them.

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: Why i hate Sundays (7/11/2010 11:18:04 AM)

And it's not just Sunday people say "God bless you"

I had a guy say god bless you on Friday, because he had a sign that said homeless Vet , and I gave him money.

igor2003 -> RE: Why i hate Sundays (7/11/2010 11:20:24 AM)

I'm not sure what Sunday has to do with it. Some people are actually nce every day of the week.

If it made you uncomfortable that you didn't know what to say in return maybe try, "Thank you, and best wishes to you too". Simple, kind, cordial, and non-religious. I doubt that they will actually stop and try to save your soul, but even if they did all you have to say is, "Thanks, but I have my own beliefs". Then wish them a good day and turn and walk away.

Where in Georgia are you? You are bringing out a part of me that wants to slap you, and here that is ok to say!

Apologies for stealing this but,  Mikey, you will be mine!

eta are you sure they didn't say bless your heart?  Cause I say that a bunch and it has nothing to do with any God.

angelikaJ -> RE: Why i hate Sundays (7/11/2010 12:20:09 PM)

Being that you are in Georgia, I too am a bit surprised that this is a Sunday only occurance for you.

You had 2 choices.

Accept the well wishes (however misguided you personally believe them to be) in the spirit they were given and realise that no harm was done upon your person or wellbeing...

OR

View it as a personal affront of your beliefs.

Since you chose to have become upset (option 2) I am not sure what it is you are really asking.

Are you asking for absolution for your response or permission to make another choice next time?

Mikey, in hindsight did your hostility towards the person make you feel uncomfortable?

What to do next time: figure out how to give a genuine response that creates something positive on both sides IF that feels right to you...or perhaps even try it on for size if you aren't sure.

A strange thing happened to me today. i was getting Donna out of the van (she's in a wheelchair and the van has a mechanical lift) at Burger King. Some guy we did not know, who was driving out of the parking lot, stopped behind us and called out his passenger window "God bless you". i said, (under my breath) "God doesn't want to bless me and i don't need it either".

what should one say or do in such a situation?

Pull the pickle out of your ass and say, "Thank You."

The guy said G-d bless you.  Not, "May you be chewed by huge hungry gnawing rats for all of eternity while your mortal remains slowly simmer in a huge lake of tar."

Pick your battles and stop being an asshole.

pahunkboy -> RE: Why i hate Sundays (7/11/2010 1:58:11 PM)

What kind of pickle?

It was a compliment. He was saying, in his own particular way, "what a great guy you must be".

And I think you knew that and, not being able to accept that there is just the slightest chance you might be a great guy, chose, and here continue to choose, to see it in some other way that will give you the opportunity to dismiss it as something else so that your negative self esteem and the negative thought cycle that drives it can remain unruffled.

A more suitable response would be "thanks". Any day of the week.

I had an elderly man wish me "Flying Spaghetti Monster bless you" once when I sneezed. I ripped his colostomy bag loose, and beat him with it.

Have I told you I love you lately? [:)]

Tantriqu -> RE: Why i hate Sundays (7/11/2010 3:18:31 PM)

I'm an atheist, and I occasionally blurt, 'Bless you!' in heartfelt thanks when someone does something unexpectedly wonderful or selfless for me.
It just means a person wants nice things to happen to you, because you're doing something nice for others; in your context, more good karma than god-bothering.
Chill. My answer would be a self-deprecating moue, and that it's nice that someone noticed.
