Americans still associate Islam with violence NEW YORK (Reuters) – The furor over plans to build a Muslim cultural center near the World Trade Center site shows nine years of efforts to separate Islam from association with terrorism have largely failed, experts say. "I'd take it one step further. I'd say that it's far, far worse today than it was in the immediate aftermath of 9/11," said Reza Aslan, a writer and scholar on religion, using the shorthand for the attacks of September 11, 2001. Public opinion polls show more than 60 percent of Americans oppose building the proposed Muslim cultural center and mosque two blocks from the site known as "Ground Zero." I still find it funny that there is so much anti-Islam rhetoric in the news, and surprisingly the about face that some news agencies have made over first supporting the Community Center at 51 Park to condemning the project. The fact that there have been prayer services in the building since November of last year seems to make no difference to anyone. quote:
"ISLAMOPHOBIA" Religious scholar Aslan blames "Islamophobia" that he said was being whipped by the Republican Party establishment. "They are making religious bigotry -- just as they made anti-immigrant sentiment -- part of their political platform," Aslan said. "Democrats in the most cowardly fashion have completely caved in to this challenge." source quote:
Sunnyvale: Man attacked for being Muslim, public safety officers say Sunnyvale public safety officers are trying to track down two young men who struck someone in the face on a busy street, apparently simply for being a Muslim man who was wearing a black cap and holding a Koran. He might be the third victim in Santa Clara County this year to fall victim to a reported anti-Muslim crime, according to the county's Office of Human Relations. Last year there were none. "They asked him if he was Jewish, and when he said, "No, I'm a Muslim,' they told him that was worse, you must be a terrorist," said Capt. Dave Verbrugge, a Sunnyvale Public Safety Department spokesman. source quote:
May 10th. Jacksonville, Florida. A pipe bomb at the Islamic Center of Northeast Florida. The FBI thinks the man in this surveillance video could be the bomber. It went off during evening prayers, and it was powerful enough to send shrapnel flying 100 yards. Fortunately the bomber didn't know where to place it, so the 60 Muslim worshipers were uninjured. If he'd put it inside and not outside they'd have been dead. And you probably would've heard about it on the news. Or maybe not. video and transcript
