It's actually one of my favorite movies to come from 'mainstream' sources. I was not bothered by the mental instability of the characters, because even in real life I'm attracted to females with those personality quirks, probably because I'm not 'healthy' myself. I've had two great relationships with 'cutters' that could probably be blamed for my interest in BDSM today. I liked the innocent and cute good girl personified by Maggie Gyllenhaal (and I think her smile is infectious), it's one of my most desired personalities for a submissive girl. It could have been more realistic or extreme, but it's a movie based around a love story between two 'abnormal' people more than an accurate display of BDSM lifestyle. It's simply another movie to sell to a vanilla audience, so it's understandable that people heavily involved in BDSM would find faults and be bored with the film. I thought it was sweet and very hot, especially her complete obedience (eating strange meals, sitting in the office, etc) even when confronted by family, without bothering to explain or acting as if there was anything unusual.
