What I find troubling here is the idea that without the government, people have no safety net at all, and will just fall to living in cars, or on the streets.

Whatever happened to family and friends? I know families who have lost the house, and they are shoehorned in at grandma's. I have friends who've been put out of their apartments, and while a lot of their shit was in the car, they had a couch pass. It's something that human beings do for each other.

How we provide what we do in gov't aid could sure use some reform, though.

What I find troubling is you don't seem to realize that many people lack that support system and it is too unreliable at best.

Dont people have to look for work to be eligible for these benefits?

When you make your bi-weekly call to Marvin in Michigan, he asks if you have been seeking work. You have to answer yes to get your check. You don't have to show any proof that you actually are looking, but I am sure no one would lie to Marvin

It doesn't "prove" anything. She asked a question and I told her how it works in Michigan. Now how the hell did you assume that I wanted to kick anyone of unemployment from that?

I had 2 people try to move in with me in the last year-  and I dont want that.

However I do have family and if it comes to that- then it does and I will share what I have with them.    So- things can be worrisome.

No problem. Sometimes it can be hard to interpret someones intent when you only have words on a screen to work with.

I believe unemployment benefits have been extended twice now. How long do you expect us to subsidize their vacation?

I was laid off a long time ago, and not only did they never even consider extending unemployment benefits during a recession, I never received any benefits at all. Guess what, I took a job at half my salary.

If you didnt receive benefits you either were too stupid to sign up for what you were legally entitled too.. or you werent laid off.

It is not true; USA is still one of the richest countries on Earth. The government just needs to collect taxes and make cuts in less important areas.

Em..you joking right? America is presently over 14 zillion dollars in debt. Do you know how much a zillion dollars is?

What do you consider less important?

Collect taxes?  Business' are closing doors, people are walking away from their homes, just who is picking up the slack on the taxes not being paid?     With so many people on unemployment, making a small percentage of their usual salary, the income tax is drastically reduced.  The trickle down effect, is less purchasing done at retail stores, meaning less sales tax.  The old saying, "you can't get blood from a turnip" was never more meaningful.

Unless they start taxing sex, or other "free" activities,  the government will need to find alternative means to pad the purse.

Obviously, he's talking about resources and wealth, the entire balance sheet, not just the budget's cash flow woes (high though they be).

Our GDP alone is by far the highest in the world--twice the size of China's, over three times the size of Japan's, over four times the size of India's, five times the size of Germany's, and seven times the size of the U.K., Russia, France, and Brazil.

AHHHhhh.... just the job I've been looking for! ! ! ! Gay Pro-Dom.  Please let me know when you'll be arriving in Denver so that I can make arrangements to rent one of the (mighty fine) dungeons here in town.

ETA:  Good?  You shouldn't have to ask.  And frankly, that's why I forgot to mention that first time 'round. I.e., it (the quality) goes without saying.
