And that's also why you don't see them in the headlines so often.

If I thought it was that important I would have. I didn't.

if this is the ONLY reason that someone is choosing a belief structure, that individual is not a "believer", xhe is an OPPORTUNIST trying to pass hirself OFF as a believer... If the only reason someone is doing something is to assure either their own safety or in order to get something they want, that behavior is called "manipulation", and should, in no way, be confused with actual -participation- in that belief structure.

Steve Johnson Blames God

It wasn't his own hands or the Pittsburgh secondary Sunday that foiled Buffalo Bills wide receiver Steve Johnson from hauling in what should have been the game-winning TD catch in the end zone. It was God.

"I PRAISE YOU 24/7!!!!!!" the 24-year-old tweeted from his iPad at around 5:15 Sunday after the Steelers' 19-16 overtime victory. "AND THIS HOW YOU DO ME!!!!!..."

In addition, the Secular Humanists also are a religion that is actively -Atheistic-, rather than just non-theistic.

I agree with your point but disagree with this example. I'm under the impression that Secular Humanism is a philosophy as opposed to a religion. At least that seems to be how they self identify.

It is, but that's a convenient fact to ignore if you're trying to construct some sort of half arsed argument that atheism is a Religion.

I think atheists are tasty sprinkled on top of hot fudge sundaes...whereas theists are best on banana splits.

Technically, you may be right, although they do congregate under the demesne of Unitarian Universalism, which may or may not be theistic, depending on who you talk to -- it isn't inherently theistic in and of itself, but comprises sub-groups that are decidedly theistic. *shrugs* One of the most complicated groups to give a lecture to or hold a round-table with that I've ever encountered... but a HECK of a good venue for intellectual discourse!

Yup, and she got to be a saint... go figure. Then again, if it made any sense, one couldn't call it "faith", right?

It's not optional, you're committing plagiarism. You should have learned this in elementary school.

I'm aware that some UU's will describe themselves as Secular Humanists, if you are trying to say more than that could you explain your position?

quote:

Well, I hit him with Pascal's Wager, which in and of itself should convince ANY irreligious person that there is no incentive to disbelieve.

And why would that be, exactly? The 'incentive to disbelieve' is that some of us do not wish to be burdened with dogma and rules of behaviour supposedly laid out by a deity we do not believe in. As for the wager, telling someone who does not believe in hell that they will (or even might) go to hell if they don't believe doesn't really work. I'm rather surprised that anyone thinks Pascal's wager will be seen as logic by people who simply do not believe in God, heaven or hell.

That said, belief can't be forced, and I would like to think that any deity worth his/her salt would be able to tell real belief from someone faking it 'just in case'. As a mere human, I have to say that such a thing would piss me off to no end were I the deity in question. It reminds me a bit of those people who are horrid human beings 6 days a week, yet think that as long as they show up freshly scrubbed for church on Sunday and put a lot of bucks into the collection plate, they are all set.

In my book, the disbeliever who is a good person because that is what and who they want to be has it all over the person who would happily lie, cheat, steal, and hurt people if not for the fact that they are afraid of some eternal punishment.

Just my agnostic
