Marini -> Why does the GOP want granny to have to eat dogfood? Save granny! (4/13/2011 10:23:45 PM)

Okay, I had to start this thread.

Why does the GOP want to take benefits away from granny?
[sm=shame.gif]
Will granny and the grandchildren end up eating dog food?
[sm=gaah.gif]If some of the budget cuts go through, I fear many of the elderly and disabled will go hungry.

Don't let granny go hungry and for GOD's sake, don't kill granny!

GOP campaign scares seniors! Don't kill granny!

Actually Rich, on the way home I switch from NPR and big head sean hannity.
I like to listen to both sides, being a Moderate and all.
I got the granny eating dogfood idea orginally from hannity!
Sometimes he gets it right.

Marini, you may not have considered another aspect in which seniors are getting screwed.  Low interest rates.

Low rates are a boon for the banks, which are able to borrow money dirt cheap, which they then make loans for credit cards at high rates (with fees added, no less).  They are a bane for those on fixed incomes.

Starving Granny so the suits make extra.

tazzygirl -> RE: Why does the GOP want granny to have to eat dogfood? Save granny! (4/14/2011 7:07:29 AM)

The last COLA was in 2008 at 5.8%.

thishereboi -> RE: Why does the GOP want granny to have to eat dogfood? Save granny! (4/14/2011 7:25:18 AM)

If your granny is eating dog food, you need to get over there and show her how to grocery shop. Maybe show her how to plan meals and watch for sales. Personally I have met tons of poor people and none of them had to resort to dog food. Beans and rice, yea. But never dog food.

servantforuse -> RE: Why does the GOP want granny to have to eat dogfood? Save granny! (4/14/2011 7:54:06 AM)

Same old scare tactics from the 'left'. The children will starve and granny will be eating dog food.

Whats really scary, and its nothing anyone is making up is what happens to granny after we crash the economy with the unthinkable debt we are amassing. No one is being kind to granny in any way through this irresponsible spending, and I am not pointing to anyone in particular. The debt is seriously killing this country and if it keeps growing as projected a lot of people of all ages are going to suffer in a very big way

In light of the above,I will assume you agree with the Presidents insistence on every class sharing the pain in retiring the debt?

Projected COLA for 2012, is .9%      ..not even a full 1%.   Meanwhile  CNBC reported inflation using the Volker guidelines that we did back then pegs inflation at around 10%.

~FR

Why does everyone want to mess with the elderly? If we had privatized SS, how many of them would be destitute now after the market crash? And now there is a call to privatize Medicare?

Leave these people alone. They worked hard. What kills me is these decisions are being made by men and women who have healthcare... and damn good care it is.

According to the Congressional Research Service, the FEHBP offers about 300 different private health care plans, including five government-wide, fee-for-service plans and many regional health maintenance organization (HMO) plans, plus high-deductible, tax-advantaged plans. All plans cover hospital, surgical and physician services, and mental health services, prescription drugs and "catastrophic" coverage against very large medical expenses. There are no waiting periods for coverage when new employees are hired, and there are no exclusions for preexisting conditions. The FEHBP negotiates contracts annually with all insurance companies who wish to participate. There is plenty of competition for the business; FEHBP is the largest employer-sponsored health plan in the U.S.

........

In addition, members of Congress also qualify for some medical benefits that ordinary federal workers do not. They (but not their families) are eligible to receive limited medical services from the Office of the Attending Physician of the U.S. Capitol, after payment of an annual fee ($491in 2007). But services don’t include surgery, dental care or eyeglasses, and any prescriptions must be filled at the member’s expense.

House and Senate members (but not their families) also are eligible to receive care at military hospitals. For outpatient care, there is no charge at the Washington, D.C., area hospitals (Walter Reed Army Medical Center and National Naval Medical Center). Inpatient care is billed at rates set by the Department of Defense.

http://www.factcheck.org/2009/08/health-care-for-members-of-congress/

Is it free? Nope.

Like other large employers, the government pays a large share of the cost of coverage. On average, the government pays 72 percent of the premiums for its workers, up to a maximum of 75 percent depending on the policy chosen. For example, the popular Blue Cross and Blue Shield standard fee-for-service family plan carries a total premium of $1,120.47 per month, of which the beneficiary pays $356.59. Washington, D.C.-based employees who prefer an HMO option might choose the Kaiser standard family plan. It carries a total premium of $629.46 per month, of which the employee pays only $157.36.

(same source)

But damn if I wouldnt love to have that.

Seniors dont have that... well most dont. Why arent they offered something similar? Oh wait, this is what the Republicans are so dead set against, saying it will lead to death panels and inflation. If its so damn bad, why arent they turning it down too?

If they privatize Medicare I will die prematurely. The proposed voucher will not be enough for me to buy medical insurance and dialysis costs
more than 4 times what I made in my best year.

tazzygirl -> RE: Why does the GOP want granny to have to eat dogfood? Save granny! (4/14/2011 11:23:23 AM)

Thats what Ryan is proposing, Ken. Going to a voucher system.

mnottertail -> RE: Why does the GOP want granny to have to eat dogfood? Save granny! (4/14/2011 11:26:52 AM)

certainly interposing for profit insurance peddlers into the fray has got to be more cost efficient and good for the country than haliburton no-bid contracts.

Death to Smoochie!!!!

luckydawg -> RE: Why does the GOP want granny to have to eat dogfood? Save granny! (4/14/2011 11:47:59 AM)

What do you have against the Clinton Policy of no bid contracts for Haliburton?

Oh, I don't know....the Democrats do a pretty good job at spreading fear: Sen. Chuck Schumer, who is chairman of the Senate Democratic Policy and Communications Center, said (about the Republicans): “They are blindly swinging a meat axe to the budget when they should be using a scalpel.

The latest attempt at scaring and misleading the public is the recent claim that Republicans, in some kind of supposedly radical ban on federal taxpayer funding of abortion — a ban along the lines of what the pro-choice Left has claimed has been law all along — are trying to redefine rape. (http://www.nationalreview.com/corner/258593/scare-tactics-gone-wild-kathryn-jean-lopez)

Rep. Karen Bass (D., Calif.) railed against Ryan’s “path to despair” — which, if enacted, would “would kick seniors and children to the curb.” (http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2700544/posts)

Nope...no scare tactics from the left. I am sure all their statements to be found in the above...and more....are only the truth, right mikey?

Section 309 is the one you are claiming was lied about.... but was it?

As the Bill currently stands....

21 ‘‘§ 309. Treatment of abortions related to rape, incest,
22 or preserving the life of the mother
23 ‘‘The limitations established in sections 301, 302, 303,
24 and 304 shall not apply to an abortion—
1 ‘‘(1) if the pregnancy is the result of an act of
2 rape or incest; or
3 ‘‘(2) in the case where a woman suffers from a
4 physical disorder, physical injury, or physical illness
5 that would, as certified by a physician, place the
6 woman in danger of death unless an abortion is per
7formed, including a life-endangering physical condi
8tion caused by or arising from the pregnancy itself.

http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/BILLS-112hr3rh/pdf/BILLS-112hr3rh.pdf

Now, that is how it is being proposed.... however, the original bill stated this as section 309...

10 ‘‘SEC. 309. TREATMENT OF ABORTIONS RELATED TO RAPE,
11 INCEST, OR PRESERVING THE LIFE OF THE
12 MOTHER.
13 ‘‘The limitations established in sections 301, 302,
14 303, and 304 shall not apply to an abortion—
15 ‘‘(1) if the pregnancy occurred because the
16 pregnant female was the subject of an act of forcible
17 rape or, if a minor, an act of incest; or
18 ‘‘(2) in the case where the pregnant female suf
19fers from a physical disorder, physical injury, or
20 physical illness that would, as certified by a physi
21cian, place the pregnant female in danger of death
22 unless an abortion is performed, including a life-en
23dangering physical condition caused by or arising
24 from the pregnancy itself.

http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/BILLS-112hr3ih/pdf/BILLS-112hr3ih.pdf

1 . No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act (Introduced in House - IH)[H.R.3.IH][PDF]
2 . No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act (Reported in House - RH)[H.R.3.RH][PDF]

http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c112:H.R.3:

There is a huge difference in wording there. Certainly seems like, for federal funding, the definition of rape was being redefined. It also seems that a child who was not a victim of incest, or forcibly raped, would have no recourse if her parents didnt have enough money to pay for the abortion. The text of the bill did not take into consideration drugs.

Now, when did the change do into effect? ABC reported Jan 30th, 2011. The Bill itself was introduced on Jan 20th. It did not come out of committee until March 17th.

On this, sorry to say, the Jones site was correct.
