Status: offline 		My daughter is a cheer-leader in middle school. I really can't imagine wanting her to wear that in a couple of years (she's only 12) so, I have to agree with the school. This is MY opinion only. Your mileage may vary.

Status: offline 		I thought it was pretty stupid as well as hypocritical on the part of the school admin. The t shirt was pretty inoffensive, especially when compared with some of the outfits I see girls wearing to school these days. He should be more concerned about the kids whose parents seem to think it is OK to send their daughters to school dressed like hookers.
It is frustrating to be in high school. I remember from my own High school days and from my kids, what petty officious bureaucrats high school principals can be.

Status: offline 		Ok, I was going to jump on the "the administration are being jerks" bandwagon, but when I read that the slogans on the shirts are "Feel for lumps and save your bumps" and "I (heart) Boobies", then I agree that the SLOGANS are inappropriate for underage girls representing their schools. If they were older college-age women, I wouldn't be as ouchy, but I'm against the underage ones doing it.

Supporting breast cancer awareness I'm all for, since some of these girls no doubt have relatives or friends of relatives who dealt and deal with the disease. great way to show their support. (no pun intended) But what's wrong with a regular loose-fitting t-shirt with a ribbon on it instead of something heading toward risque?

Status: offline 		Personally, as someone who has lost family to cancer and currently someone close to me has just found out she has cancer at a very young age, I think when people have those little "fun" sayings about it like "save the tatas," it shows a total lack of respect for the trials the sick have to face.

Status: offline 		Well as someone who has also lost family members to breast cancer, I don't find anything offensive about them at all. In fact I think the school admin is over-reacting. I think the girls are doing something awesome by wanting to wear the t-shirts and raising money for BC research.

I'm not going to get into an arguement or debate right now, as I've just stated someone close to me has found out she has cancer just 2 days ago at the ripe old age of 19. And I'm really not in the frame of mind to concentrate on anything. I know if I get into an arguement, I'm going to be not very nice today, so I won't.

In terms of prevention, I think people respond better to something light hearted, instead of gloom and doom. If the t shirt reminds someone to do their breast exam, then what the hey. I am as appalled by the sexualization of high school girls in the media and elsewhere as anyone. I just don't find the slogan particularly offensive or age inappropriate. There are far worse things on the bumpers of card on school parking lots. Finally, if the girls' parents are OK with it, shouldn't that have some weight?

and that is perfectly understandable, really I understand. When my father was diagnosed with prostate cancer, despite working in Oncology my first, gut reaction was "OMG HE'S GONNA DIE!" He hasn't of course and in fact has been in remission for about 5 years now.

Bingo! As I just mentioned, I work in Oncology and have seen at least one coffee mug that reads "Cancer Sucks!" (belonging to one of our nurses). Both our patients and staff dress in bright colors and the atmosphere is in general a positive one. Yes people die of cancer but many, many of them battle and WIN!

Status: offline 		Messages of hope are important. My brother died of pancreatic cancer earlier this year. He felt horrible for months, but was too scared to go to the doctor and find out what was wrong. On the other hand, my lovely sister self discovered her cancer in a breast exam, and has been cancer free for 10 years, now. Feel for lumps, indeed.

Status: offline 		Yes "feel for lumps" indeed! We have patients who have been (breast) cancer free for 30+ years...no that's not a typo. Incredible advances have been made thanks to research and education.

Amyg, I don't want to give you and your friend false hope but breast cancer isn't NECESSARILY the killer it once was. There are amazing treatments out there - some anti-hormone rather than chemo/radiation and it very much depends on the stage of her disease.

WE get it, but 14 year old boys running around with 14 year old girls wearing tight pink belly shirts that say "Feel your lumps" is just asking for problems. I maintain my opinion that the slogans are inappropriate for the underaged.

The first time a boy walks up to a girl huh-huh-huh-ing like Beavis & Butthead and tries to feel her 'lumps", her parents are going to be in the principal's office first thing Monday screaming about harassment. and here come the lawsuits.

Status: offline 		Windchymes the t-shirts say feel for lumps, check your bumps. Anyone with half a brain is going to know it's referring to breast self exams. There is also the irony that boo is being said for the outfits girls wear that cover less than half their body but there is an objection to t-shirts that remind women to self exam their breasts.

Status: offline 		Well because the discussion was about these particular shirts. If you like, I'd be happy to discuss the pitfalls of allowing your children to dress like women, but I don't think that's the subject here.

Feel For Lumps is (just in my own opinion) inappropriate for children. Even adolescent children. Boys are...immature and really can't handle too much. Heck I had one that said (in french) I speak French, the language of love when I was in high school and thought that was risque...

Status: offline 		The thing that is being missed here is that they don't want to wear the t-shirts in school or out in public. They want to wear them as cheerleaders during a game while collecting money for breast cancer research. There is no chance of anything being misunderstood here, it's a very specific set of circumstances.
