ORIGINAL: farglebargle Crazy Catholic Church doctrine is that souls are atomic and immutable. If you disagree, go take it up with Ratzinger. Hypothesis: A soul is implanted at conception. Experiment: IF a soul is implanted at conception, twinning of the blastocyst at up to 15 days after conception leaves us in one of three discrete states: State A: One Twin has a soul. One Twin doesn't have a soul. State B: The soul is split. State C: The second soul is implanted AFTER CONCEPTION. Now since States B and C go against church doctrine, only State A would be valid IF the hypothesis was true. Since we *obviously* aren't overrun by the evil twins possesses by the spirits of demons, then State A itself is false. Without any valid end states, the hypothesis is falsified. QED. The soul may be “atomic” and “immutable” but even according to your definition (Catholic doctrine on souls is a very complex derivation on ancient and Medieval philosophy), a soul could still be replicated, and indeed many have noted a remarkable (arguably almost psychic) link between twins that goes above and beyond anything found with others having strong familial ties. quote:
ORIGINAL: farglebargle Then why don't you respect the "Free Will" of those who choose to use birth control or have an abortion? For those that accept the notion or existence of free-will, it doesn't automatically follow that they will implicitely accept actions as a consequence of this aspect of reality. If they did then it would seem that they would have no right to object to any expression of free will, which would include murder or genocide.
