So much for the churches and communities taking care of the poor.

Since they will still be collecting food for baskets, I'd say it is more a case of getting more selective in which segments of the poor population they are going to serve.  Those who feel the good works of a private charity are an entitlement to show up and demand, are finding otherwise.

Remember also that Jesus taught that the poor would always be with us, and helping them was a good thing, but should not become the priority of the faith.  (Mark 14:7 - paraphrased)

Yeah, I'll bet the poor are seeing it as a political and theological issue. They're philosophical like that.

Blessed be the rationalizers.

Exactly so. Some "poor" spend a great deal of their time ripping off charities. I remember working a T-giving food giveaway and working the loading dock and loading food into high dollar SUVs of those who were "poor". They did not help me load their lovely vehicles either. Then there are the "poor" who make it a buisiness to shake down charities for money.

In this case, the problem seems to be that actual poor people are showing up.

I think the church would much prefer the SUVs.

Jesus also taught, if you believe the bible, that believers should give away all their possesions. Matthew 19:21

Another aspect of the haves, deciding what the have nots deserve...even in Canada
Its the same the whole world over, aint it all a bloomin shame, its the rich what gets the money, and the poor what gets the blame(1890s song)
The pleasures of the mighty are obtained by the tears of the poor.

If the professional poor are showing up at churches foe their "entitlements," maybe they should be aware of the theological issue?  And I didn't see where was politics in the mix at all, in what you presented.

DaddySatyr -> RE: Church closes food program because it attracts the poor (8/26/2012 10:34:06 AM)

Yeah, religions suck; especially when they don't do what we, the people who berate them, regularly, want them to do. What is wrong with them?

Don't they understand that the only reason we allow them to remain in operation is so that we can berate them in any way we feel is appropriate or politically expedient?

Jesus H. Christ on a pogostick! The nerve of these religions!

Peace and comfort,

Michael

"the professional poor"?

Drink deep, wandering gloom.

Lucylastic -> RE: Church closes food program because it attracts the poor (8/26/2012 10:36:01 AM)

Many churches here have the same requirements as food banks..you have to show proof and are only allowed so much a month.
The attitudes towards "street people" is worse than it is towards the "professional*barf* poor", especially by the "believers" Not to mention that street people dont usually drive SUVS

smartsub10 -> RE: Church closes food program because it attracts the poor (8/26/2012 10:39:38 AM)

When I was involved with a church's food bank many years ago our policy was to give to people who asked. We didn't judge or question. If they weren't really in need, well, that wasn't for us to decide. But, overall, the people who came to our door really needed help.

It is not surprising how some would try to use this as an indictment of all churches everywhere

Who is doing that, Muse???

tj444 -> RE: Church closes food program because it attracts the poor (8/26/2012 10:57:30 AM)

it is a church that gives food to its "regulars".. so from that i think they mean poor people that belong to the church and attend regularly... as opposed to non-believer non-belonging interlopers that come in for freebies after the church service? I guess if ya want the freebies then ya gotta pay the religous freight, huh? See, thats why I dislike organized religion, its like that movie "The Body Snatchers".. ya gotta be one of "them"...
