George Zimmerman's DNA, not Trayvon Martin's, found on gun

Only DNA from George Zimmerman was found on the grip of the gun that was used in the fatal shooting of unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin, according to DNA test results released Wednesday.

Zimmerman has acknowledged shooting Martin, but insists he acted in self-defense in the wake of a confrontation that left him injured.

The DNA findings could play a role in the trial, allowing the prosecution to argue against self-defense since it now seems that Martin never touched the weapon. The defense could counter that Zimmerman shot before Martin could get to the gun.

This just seems to keep going downhill.

This isnt started to renew the previous arguments. Its about the DNA evidence in the case and this part of the trial. I foresee this being a sticking point with a jury.

Anyone else glad this is dragging out a bit?

The evidence was bound to come out. I am wondering if they did any work to find out the position of both men, when the gun was fired.

Um... Why would anyone think Travon's DNA would be on the grip wrapped in George's hand? This shouldn't surprise anyone, nor is it ground breaking news.

Hell, George's hand should have completely engulfed the grip, it was a small pistol. George testified he was on his back, with Martin standing over him, he brought the weapon up between their bodies, and he shot... I don't see the big benefit for the prosecution here.

I thought that Zimmerman claimed a confrontation, not an attack from Martin with Zimmerman's own gun. Maybe I misunderstood the earlier reports.

Zimmerman, 28, a Neighborhood Watch volunteer, is charged with second-degree murder in the shooting Feb. 26. He told police he shot the teen in self-defense after Trayvon repeatedly knocked his head to the ground and reached for the gun Zimmerman wore in a holster. He has pleaded not guilty.

I guess reaching for really meant reaching for - as in reached for but did not touch? I think it is the knocking him to the ground that would be considered the confrontation part. Again, I just don't remember anything about Martin actually handling or attempting to shoot the gun. I only ever understood that Martin got scared because Zimmerman was chasing him down, and then Martin physically struck Zimmerman out in self-defense, at which point Zimmerman shot him. To me, that is how the reports always sounded. Whatever excuse Zimmerman has come up with - well, I would be shocked if there were any physical evidence to back it up. Shocked.

Just doesnt seem probable to me.

George's story is that the gun was holstered until right before the shot, at which point Trayvon reached for it, George caught Trayvon's hand to stop him, and pulled and fired.

So the DNA evidence actually supports George's story.

Oh, and this evidence has been public since May; so I'm kind of amused that it's getting released again and a big deal made of.

I wasn't referring to you specifically. There's been a large number of media outlets reporting this as newly released DNA evidence, and thus lots of people are making a big deal out of old news.

The DNA testing just came back.. so I would agree that its newly released DNA evidence. Which is why I asked... isnt it best that this is dragging out a bit?

The DNA test results were made public in May.

The office of State Attorney Angela Corey released that report, along with previously reported witness statements, hundreds of photos of the gated community where the shooting occurred and a 911 call made by Trayvon's father the day after the teen's death. The items included an interview of the 7-Eleven clerk who saw Trayvon the moments before his death.

The mixed DNA profIle obtained from Exhibit DMS-21A demonstrated the presence of at least two
individuals. A complete DNA profile for the major contributor could be determined,
This rnaj or DNA profile is consistent with originating from ,a male individual and matches the DNA
profile from George Michael Zimmerman (JR-2),
Tbe frequency of occurrence of the mftior DNA profile obtained from Exhibit DMS-21A for unrelated
individuals in the following populations is approximately;
1 in 11 quadrillion Caucasians
1 in 1.5 quintillion African Americans (Blacks)
1 in 57 quadrillion Southeastern Hispanics
A DNA profile for the minor contributor(s) could not be determined.
Trayvon Benjamin Martin (ME-3) is excluded as a possible contributor to the mixed DNA obtained
from Exhibit DMS~21A.

That is Zimmerman's story, which isn't very likely. It was a very dark night, and if Martin was straddling Zimmerman, either pounding his head, hitting him, or smothering him, Martin would have had to be seated high enough on Zimmerman's body that his thighs and knees would have been covering Zimmerman's waist area where the gun was located. If Martin's legs were covering the weapon, and it was such a dark night, then how did Martin manage to see the gun to even know it was there to reach for it? It simply doesn't make any sense.

In a reenactment to satisfy our curiosity on that point, we realized Trayvon probably felt the gun jutting into his leg before he saw it. (That's how it happened with us.) George said that he "felt" like Trayvon saw it; he really was just guessing how he came to notice it.

What *is* new in today's release though, is the crime scene drawing by W-6 (the witness who saw Trayvon on top of George right before the shooting). He notes that the guy in black is on top of the guy wearing red at each point, and in the interview describes Trayvon as having his arms outstretched after the shooting (not underneath his body).
