I'm thinking a good reason to preserve Iran is that they don't dip into the world's bacon supply overmuch.

The Republicans actually thought that Reagan was Moses.

No, they didn't.

Yes, this certainly is.

There is a relationship between immorality and prosperity. It is difficult for a society to be both prosperous and moral. This is clearly spelled out in Scripture.

If you shop around and use coupons you can be moral and cheapass.

BenevolentM -> RE: Why should we preserve Iran (11/14/2012 2:21:52 PM)

People seem to think that all you need do is oppose your enemy and you will be on the side of God and righteousness.

I wonder what the devil thinks? Haven't read his autobiography as yet.

Many economists would agree with you mnottertail.

Obviously, you do not regard concepts as real.

mnottertail -> RE: Why should we preserve Iran (11/14/2012 2:30:33 PM)

I have to have the neccessary and sufficient conditions met that they be conceptualized, before I can conceive of them as concepts.  That work has not been done.

What you are talking about is the flip side of what I have been talking about. Though this may seem conceited there is no flip side because the universe is not symmetric. You can only argue that your obverse side of the coin is a viable alternative only if the universe were symmetric. I recall that this was a point that Saint Thomas Aquinas made. All things tend toward the good. Nothing can be said to be perfectly evil.

It is kind of like this, to take the flip side what you end up with is 49% truth and 51% falsity. Your half truth. Between the two it is better to go with the 51% since it is that 1% that is going to make the difference. The odds are against you.

Go figure that the lack of symmetry in the universe is mysterious.

mnottertail -> RE: Why should we preserve Iran (11/14/2012 3:21:09 PM)

There is no necessary and sufficient condition demonstrated to prove the universe asymmetric, by every available evidence the universe is symmetric, everything in it, and it is so in every direction, in every way.

With the notable exception of the amount of anti-matter vis-a-vis matter.

BenevolentM -> RE: Why should we preserve Iran (11/14/2012 3:24:54 PM)

That the universe is symmetric is a Pagan concept.

Asymmetric is asymmetric no matter how you slice it.

mnottertail -> RE: Why should we preserve Iran (11/14/2012 3:30:20 PM)

No, not at all.   IN fact the Norse found the world very asymmetric, and it did not exist outside the earth.   For many other of the heathen or pagan religions, other than some of the Asian ones (whos symmetry ideas were far different than ours today) it was a very asymmectric, one way deal.  And that true of the Tao though, for sure.

Symmetry is a recent concept on the world stage and in science, not religion, even the Onesters are ALL asymmetric.  You worship god, he don't worship you.

End of that joke, out of hand.

Sorry, no it isn't.
Not even close.

Where on earth did you get this idea from?? [sm=banghead.gif]

So in other words you feel you can be symmetric in your asymmetry.

BenevolentM -> RE: Why should we preserve Iran (11/14/2012 4:05:29 PM)

Alright, I concede I could be using the terms polytheism and paganism as synonymous, but the distinction has a precising definition feel to it that might be useful in the study of anthropology. Maybe you are confusing anthropology with theology.

BenevolentM -> RE: Why should we preserve Iran (11/14/2012 4:22:45 PM)

The asymmetry of the universe suggests the existence of a one true God. This was a novel concept for the ancient world. The first example of monotheism known dates back to Akhenaten.

quote:

Akhenaten ... was a Pharaoh of the Eighteenth dynasty of Egypt who ruled for 17 years and died perhaps in 1336 BC or 1334 BC. He is especially noted for abandoning traditional Egyptian polytheism and introducing worship centered on the Aten, which is sometimes described as monotheistic or henotheistic. An early inscription likens the Aten to the sun as compared to stars, and later official language avoids calling the Aten a god, giving the solar deity a status above mere gods.

Akhenaten tried to bring about a departure from traditional religion, yet in the end it would not be accepted. After his death, traditional religious practice was gradually restored, and when some dozen years later rulers without clear rights of succession from the Eighteenth Dynasty founded a new dynasty, they discredited Akhenaten and his immediate successors, referring to Akhenaten himself as "the enemy" in archival records.

He was all but lost from history until the discovery, in the 19th century, of Amarna, the site of Akhetaten, the city he built for the Aten. ...

This is what the Jews did following the Holocaust. They rejected everything that represented their enemy even if it meant rejecting their own faith and religion itself. Since the Germans at the time believed in asymmetry, the Jews would embrace symmetry.
