Next to tits on a bull, there is nothing more useless in a conversation about guns than the opinions of people deemed by their governments to be untrustworthy of owning one.

Nice to see you welcome open debate........

The NRA spokesman today was laughable. Movies were to blame, mental health was to blame, songs were to blame, the lack of school guards was to blame.

Every solution but the obvious, ban assault type rifles.

Kirata, you and i rarely agree but the nuance of thought you bring to this is clearly past the ability of most to comprehend.

The assault weapons ban did nothing, in fact school shootings emerged when it was in effect.

The NRA statement today was pathetic and seems to set us on the track to nothing happening. I had hopes they would accede to the desires of the mass of the nation to restrict high capacity magazines at the very least but they seem intent on staying the course with their allies in the House. Hopefully this will be remembered.

What else would you expect? Wayne LaPierre is an idiot. Whenever he gets the urge to speak in front of a camera, he should bang his head on a concrete wall until the urge subsides.

Why just assult-type rifles??

I wonder what percentage of gun murders are attributed to assult rifles compared to all other gun types??

So why pick on just one type of gun?
That's why all previous attempts at gun control have failed in the US - far too specific to be of any real use.
It's also why anything coming out of the report for Obama won't be good enough either - coz it just won't go far enough.
Why won't it go far enough?
Because they will only ever put things in it that they think they might stand half-a-snowballs chance of getting through congress.

Assault rifles rank behind baseball bats as murder weapons. There are two problems with gun bans. 1 they punish the innocent for the crimes of the guilty 2 They do not work, see D C were the murder rate doubled after their ban with the now safe to use clubs and knives more than making up for a minute drop in gun violence. ( unless in the words of Archie Bunker you would be happer if they were pushed out windows)

We didn't ban gun threads, we just made reasonable restrictions.

That's pretty funny.

It's hard for me to see the upside of banning us from starting new subjects related to guns: (1) Background Checks (2) Storage (3) The NRA position (4) Proposed legislation (5) Old Legislation etc. (6) Facts and figures, etc.

See the debate during the passage of first assault weapons ban. The was not disputed by proponents of the ban and I believe it came from FBI stats

I object. Those figures are 2005.

Right, so I am just imagining the massacres that have taken place with assualt type rifles SINCE the ban was lifted ?

You just spout a lot of uneducated crap hoping no one will dare question your bullshit........So allow me.

quote:

The Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence examined the impact of the Assault Weapons Ban in its 2004 report, On Target: The Impact of the 1994 Federal Assault Weapon Act. Examining 1.4 million guns involved in crime, "in the five-year period before enactment of the Federal Assault Weapons Act (1990-1994), assault weapons named in the Act constituted 4.82% of the crime gun traces ATF conducted nationwide. Since the law’s enactment, however, these assault weapons have made up only 1.61% of the guns ATF has traced to crime."

I have never said there aught to be a total ban on guns in the US. I am unsure where you stayed while you were there, but I was out in the wilds so agree there is a need for protection.

Well darn....

This consolidation is probably good, however, because as a regular, non-dangerous person with bipolar disroder, what I was going to say about the idea of being forced to become a part of some FBI registry would not have been nice :) I don;t want a gun....but I don't like the idea of being on some registry like I am a potential pariah.

Assualt weapons are rarely used to commit violent crimes. Handguns are the weapons used in typical crime.

Unlike shotguns and rifles, the cant be sawed off, so you cant hide em.

I would advocate a complete ban on guns.
I lived most of my time in FL (Jax & Tampa areas), a little up in Raleigh (Nth Carolina) and a few weeks just north of NYC.
I just find the whole idea of people owning guns so abhorrent and 'unnatural' that I would never own one unless I was liable to be mauled by the local bear population or wild cyotes.

If you can justify a real need for a gun (for bears and other nasty wildlife; not other humans), then by all means get one, get a proper firearms certificate of proficiency in the use of it and provide a safe place to keep it and also take out 3rd party insurance against someone being injured or killed by it.
Of course, you wouldn't be allowed to hoard an arsenal of weapons - just those deemed necessary for the job at hand.
And I see nothing wrong with that idea at all.

But guns for the general populace??
Bad idea in the first place.
It was fine when the 2nd was drawn up - guns and society weren't as advanced as they are now and there wasn't really much of a regular 'national' army either. So it has it's use in its day - but not now; it's outdated and unnecessary.
