Every solution but the obvious, ban assault type rifles.

It's a reliable sign that you've fallen down a rabbit hole when things aren't what they are anymore. There is no appreciable difference between the rate of fire of an AR-15 (the alleged "assault weapon" here) and any other auto-loading firearm, pistols included. They all fire a single round with each pull of the trigger. Trying to pull off the illusion that an AR-15 is an "assault weapon" should be left to the fellows with top-hats and pretty assistants.

What i found interesting was after all the mocking about knives, turns out they are used more than shotguns or rifles. Please note the distinction between connecting words with and vs or...

I am stunned about that one, would't have believed it. Which means knives kill.more people than assualt weapons by far! Now that doesn't surprise me at all.

Once again the AR-15 is one of the 3 original assault rifles. It ws designed for military use and sold to militaries exclusivly for several years before it was ever offered for civilian sale.

no that was the m-16 the ar-15 is a civilianized version lacking things like full auto three round burst capability, and bayonet lug. That is everythng that makes the M-16 an assault weapon

The NRA statement today was pathetic and seems to set us on the track to nothing happening. I had hopes they would accede to the desires of the mass of the nation to restrict high capacity magazines at the very least but they seem intent on staying the course with their allies in the House. Hopefully this will be remembered.

To me, the statement was nothing more than advertising for the gun manufacturers. That's one industry we have that will only grow.

Also, given the level of screening on armed guards (yes, the majority have their heads screwed on straight), do we really want them wielding guns near schools?

Nice to see you welcome open debate........

The NRA spokesman today was laughable. Movies were to blame, mental health was to blame, songs were to blame, the lack of school guards was to blame.

Every solution but the obvious, ban assault type rifles.

Actually all of those thoughts were introduced in the threads here. Of course those were also blaming the NRA but I suppose they couldn't copy that one.

This is not 1956. AR-15 has not been a selective-fire rifle designation for decades. AR-15 is Colt's designation for its non-selective fire civilian version of the rifle. The military selective-fire version has the designation M16. The M16 is an assault rifle. The AR-15 is not an assault rifle. And the current year is 2012. There, I think that covers everything.

Stow it, Spamboy. I told you this was going to happen 8 threads back. You thought it was, "great sport."

“I can’t help but wonder what he might have done, how this might have been different, if he didn’t have access to those guns,” said Mr. Duncan, who saw the impact of gun violence first-hand during his time as chief of Chicago public schools.

In the past ban, manufacturers got around it by changing things on the rifle, thus making it not an assault weapon under the law.

Kirata, you and i rarely agree but the nuance of thought you bring to this is clearly past the ability of most to comprehend.

Yes, I'm sure that it takes a mind that's been put together in a very particular way. I'm also sure that Kirata must be basking in your approval right now, Michael.

Yep.

And if I were to lose my mind into pure evil, and go down the spree killer path, I'd easily be able to take out at least 100 innocent victims, with a stolen 18-wheeler. Easily 4 to 5 times that, with the right hazmat load.

How many gun owners do not lock up their guns at home? Its like a woman walking down a pitch black alley at night. Yep, she should be able too, and she should expect to come out the other side unharmed... but the chances of that are not all that good, are they.

People know the risks of their homes/cars being broken into... yet they feel no compulsion to make it difficult for a thief to get at the one thing that will ensure they can rob other people?

I hold irresponsible, but legal, gun owners responsible for failing to secure their weapons.

Do you lock your TV up at home when you leave?
Do you lock up your stereo?
Do you lock up your cash and jewelry?
Do you put your tools in a safe?

Holding a gun owner liable for the actions of a burglar is EXACTLY like holding a woman liable for being raped. I mean, did she lock that chastity belt on before she left the house?

That's what's I find so creepy about the quote tazzygirl posted:

Yanno? Like let's not even fucking go there, what he did do was bad enough. The assumption that without a gun he would have done less damage came out of somebody's ass. There is no reason to assume that.

No the AR-15 predates the M-16 designations. The weapon Stoner designed is the AR-15.

No. The US Army calls certain AR-15's various designations like M-16 and M-4. That does not change the fact the weapon as designed is named the AR-15.

Nope. None of those things I can take out of the home and kill the next person I meet with either. And bull fucking shit its the same as holding a woman liable for being raped.

Lock the fucking shit up at home and half these problems would be solved. Soothe your egos some other way. What the hell happened to personal responsibility? You guys can afford 300 dollar guns.. but you cant afford a safe to lock them up in?
