No it wasn't.
"The only people who can possibly comprehend how traumatic 7/11 was to us Americans are people who remember the second world war," was the gist of your comment.
I say try telling that to a Basque or an Israeli, to pick the two most obvious groups who spring to mind.
I'm sorry you found your country's invitation to the real world that the rest of us have been living in since the '50s so upsetting, but let's not go overboard with the exaggeration, eh?

Well, instead of jumping right into getting your panties in a twist, why don't you just ask for me to clarify my statement?

What I was talking about is how the WWII generation in America is probably the generation in America that understands the panic attitude in America best since they were the last generation to see the effect of such an attack on Americans.

Does that help you?

Certainly a lot less histrionic than your original version, yes.

Bullshit.
Every other nation in the western world has been subjected to large scale terrorist attacks over the years. The fact that you guys were lucky until 2001 is no excuse for absurd hyperbole about the second world war. Until it looks like Al Queda have the capacity to carry out an invasion, that argument really doesn't carry any water.

I remain unconvinced that the japs had any ability to invade the u.s.
The germans were unable to invade england so their ability to invade the u.s. is just laughable.

Just what were the effects of that attack?

Wow that is a puzzler. Maybe it was this.

It has been my experience that people who command others to "educate yourself" or "get an education" or something similar are - ironically - the ones who are usually lacking knowledge in the area they fancy themselves an expert.

You fall firmly in that category. Your inability to see past your own bias filter (in which non-muslim acts of terror are simply not considered), your denial of white privilege (which is blatantly obvious to anyone whose intellectual honesty is not compromised by by either racism and/or an oversensitive ego) makes it obvious that you cannot be dealt with in an honest manner.

For that reason, I desire no further converse with you.

Perhaps when you mature a little and realize that being entitled to your own opinion does not entitle you to your own fact, that may change. Until then...

The Germans were less than a month away from invading the UK when they decided to abandon the Battle of Britain and invade Russia instead.

Well, if you didn't read the entire thread then I can see why you didn't pick up on the fact that I'd commented on two different conflicts. Hence, my need for you to specify.

If I recall my history correctly, Americans went through a period where they became hyper-sensitive to a variety of potential threats. People in California (and probably elsewhere) began to spread rumors of possible invasions, Japanese Americans were rounded up and placed in internment camps, etc. All of which surely seemed justified at the time but in retrospect is often viewed as overreaction. Much like how I think some people are acting now with their hyper-sensitivity toward Muslims since 9/11. Which, in my opinion, may also be playing a role in people's seeming hyper-sensitivity toward men hanging around playgrounds, for example. People are feeling threatened where no threat exists. To me, it feels like a social loss of innocence as I described earlier in the thread.

Moonhead -> RE: Anti male bigotry exposed (8/19/2013 1:25:31 PM)

You're conflating two different factors, there. There's no connection between paranoia about muslim terrorists and paranoia about pedophiles, except that both have been stoked up by the media.

Paranoia is paranoia. It can be both general or specific depending on the person affected. But I like how you deny a link then define one. That was brilliant.[8|]

Oddly enough, I agree with you in that if there is a link then it may indeed be the media that's created (caused) it.

Moonhead -> RE: Anti male bigotry exposed (8/19/2013 4:07:11 PM)

So what other possible connection could there be, besides the media, then?
Last time I checked very few people had been blown up by IEDs set by kiddiefiddlers.

What I saw in the examples RottenJohnny gave showed a commonality in human behavior to panic and overreact - and how law enforcement might be inclined to profile people because whatever demographic group they happen to fall into. Whether it's Japanese-Americans during World War II, or Muslims trying to board an airplane, or a man at a playground. If society takes a stance that profiling is wrong, then it's wrong. That's the connection that I saw.

Well said. But profiling is a natural human instinct. Uncivilized perhaps but nevertheless, part of our "fight or flight" response. It's the advent of modern technology that has turned it into a science. Now we're bombarded with so much data and analyses regarding human behavior that I think we're becoming hyper-sensitive to our own distasteful characteristics.

So, relating back to the original post, the choice for me is this: Am I going to allow myself to feel victimized when I get profiled as a man and become bitter and angry about it because I've done nothing wrong or am I going to let others do what they feel is necessary to be comfortable around me? After all, trust is earned, whether that's on an airplane or on a playground. I've decided not to freak out over it.

I have read some accounts about the "potential invasion",none of which address the major issues restricting such an invasion. The germans lacked landing craft...which was the reason it took the allies till 44 to mount an invasion of northern europe...we also lacked them. As for the tunnel, think again, how would the germans get to the mouth of the tunnel without transport?
Russia was always the primary target if we are to believe what hitler wrote. England was just a nussance that he sought to neutralize through bluster and diplomacy. If he were serious about destroying england he would not have allowed the britt army to escape from dunkirk.

Moonhead -> RE: Anti male bigotry exposed (8/20/2013 9:01:46 AM)

He took a bloody good crack at stopping the British army escaping from Dunkirk.
